Study in Germany After 12th for Indian Students: Routes & Studienkolleg (2026-27)

Study in Germany After 12th
Study In Germany After 12th

An Indian Class 12 certificate doesn’t, on its own, get you into a German bachelor’s degree. To study in Germany after 12th, most students first spend up to a year at a Studienkolleg (a full-time university preparation course) and pass its final exam, the FSP. German universities usually expect 13 years of schooling; Indian schooling typically runs 12. Two direct routes can skip the Studienkolleg: a JEE Advanced rank, for technology and natural sciences courses, and one passed year of a bachelor’s in India in the same or a closely related subject. From Winter Semester 2026/27, the Studienkolleg and Indian-year routes need at least 70% in Class XII, under the APS India eligibility update. APS is the German Embassy’s document-check office in New Delhi. Our study in Germany guide covers the rest.

Key Takeaways

  • From Winter Semester 2026/27, the Studienkolleg and Indian-year routes need at least 70% in Class XII, from any board.
  • A JEE Advanced rank allows a direct application for technology and natural sciences courses only.
  • At KIT and the FU, HU and Charite Studienkolleg in Berlin, the FSP opens courses in your track only, across Germany; check that your target university accepts your Studienkolleg’s FSP.
  • Year one’s upfront minimum is about INR 13.45 lakh, mostly the EUR 11,904 (approx. INR 12.69 lakh) blocked account. At DAAD India’s EUR 1,150 (approx. INR 1.23 lakh) a month living estimate, it’s nearer INR 15.47 lakh.
  • Below 70% (APS filed on or after 15 March 2026) and no JEE rank: study in India, then a German master’s.

From Winter Semester 2026/27, the Studienkolleg route and the one-year-in-India route to a German bachelor's both need at least 70% of the maximum overall marks in Class XII. That holds whichever board issued the certificate, under the APS India update on undergraduate eligibility requirements. Check that percentage first, before stream, budget or language.

Your next steps:

  1. Work out your Class XII overall percentage of the maximum marks.
  2. Start German now, aiming for B1 to B2, at a Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan in India).
  3. Register with APS once your final results are out.
  4. Apply to your Studienkolleg track by its deadline (KIT: 15 July for winter).

Filed your APS application before 15 March 2026? It’s assessed under the rules in force when you filed, and an APS certificate already issued stays valid. Our requirements to study in Germany page covers APS exemptions and documents.

Have 70% and the option of a year in India? The Indian-year route skips the foundation year, but it limits you to the same or a closely related subject and needs better language skills. A visa to start a degree straight away generally needs C1 in the study language; one for a German-taught Studienkolleg needs at least B1 German. For a science student without a JEE rank, the Studienkolleg is usually the simpler path.

From our counselling desk: Since the 70% rule began, we've seen students just below the line get APS refusals. Check the overall total, not just your best subjects, before you pay the non-refundable APS fee.

Studienkolleg and the FSP Exam: Tracks, Entrance Test and Deadlines

Take a PCM student from Hyderabad with 78% in Class XII and B1 German. She applies to the T-course at Studienkolleg Karlsruhe. KIT lets her sit its entrance test only with a valid student visa. So the order runs: KIT offers her a test place, she gets her visa, then she sits the test in Karlsruhe. The test lasts about three hours, in maths and German.

The course is full time, about 32 hours of classes a week, usually for up to two semesters. Entry is through the Aufnahmepruefung (the Studienkolleg’s own entrance test, held in Germany).

German is the hardest part, and each college sets its own level:

StudienkollegGerman to applyHow and when to apply
Studienkolleg Karlsruhe (KIT)At least B1KIT portal: May to 15 July (winter), November to 15 January (summer)
Universitaet KasselB1: a B1 course with at least 400 hours of classes, a Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or TestDaF 4×3uni-assist, winter intake only
HTW BerlinA completed B2 courseuni-assist only: 1 May to 30 June (winter), 1 to 30 November (summer)
Heidelberg UniversityB2+ plus a German entrance examApply to the university where you plan your degree, not the Studienkolleg (a Baden-Wuerttemberg rule)

Passing the FSP (Feststellungspruefung, the written and oral final exam) at KIT or at the FU, HU and Charite Studienkolleg in Berlin opens courses across Germany, but only in your track. At KIT, a T-course FSP opens STEM subjects, not business. The FSP doesn’t give you a seat, so check that your target university accepts your Studienkolleg’s FSP. Pick the track for the degree you want, not the latest deadline.

Courses After 12th in Germany by Stream and Teaching Language

Around 2,000 German bachelor’s courses are taught in German and around 300 in English, and they generally take 3 to 4 years, depending on the subject. With the Studienkolleg year first, the full route usually runs 4 to 5 years.

Indian students often pick engineering, computer science or business. A Hochschule fuer angewandte Wissenschaften (university of applied sciences, FH or HAW) is more practice-led than a research university. Our list of public universities in Germany covers both types.

  • German-taught: TUM (Technical University of Munich) asks for DSH-2 or TestDaF level 4 in all sections for most German-taught bachelor’s; both are German admission exams.
  • English-taught: Constructor University (private) asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90.
  • Medicine: at HHU Duesseldorf, your German certificate goes in with the application.

At HTW Berlin, an English-taught degree doesn’t remove the Studienkolleg step, and that preparatory course is taught in German. With so few English-taught courses, plan on German either way: KIT, Kassel and HTW Berlin all ask for B1 to B2 German before their Studienkolleg. Private universities add a visa rule: proof that the first year’s fees are paid, or a substantial deposit. Compare fields in our guide to the best courses to study in Germany.

Cost of a Bachelor’s in Germany After 12th: Year 1 in Rupees

The visa’s proof of funds for a Studienkolleg or bachelor’s student is EUR 11,904 (approx. INR 12.69 lakh) in a Sperrkonto (blocked account) for the first year. Under the German Missions in India student visa checklist, no more than EUR 992 (approx. INR 1.06 lakh) is released each month. Parents: this is living money, not an extra cost.

DAAD funding is in principle for master’s and PhD study, so don’t count on it to study in Germany after 12th. Once you’re on a bachelor’s, your university may offer a Deutschlandstipendium of EUR 300 a month; nationality doesn’t count.

Month-by-Month Timeline from Class 12 Boards to a German Campus

To study in Germany after 12th with an October start, plan backwards from your Studienkolleg’s deadline, such as KIT’s 15 July:

  1. After final board results: register with APS. It can’t hold a file open for results, and checks take at least two weeks, with no fixed time.
  2. May to mid-July: apply through the college’s own portal, as at KIT, or through uni-assist (the universities’ application-checking service). uni-assist wants your file at least 8 weeks before the deadline and usually replies in 4 to 6 weeks. After results and the APS check, those 8 weeks may be gone: for winter, aim at Studienkollegs whose deadline you can still meet, or plan for summer.
  3. Once you have an admission letter: fund the blocked account, then apply on the Consular Services Portal (the German Missions’ online visa form), compulsory where it covers your visa. Book an appointment with VFS, the German Missions’ visa service provider, for your area. Under-18s must also attend in person.
  4. The wait: a national visa can take several months, with no status replies for the first three. Indian documents need no apostille.
  5. On arrival: sit the entrance test, enrol, and apply for your Aufenthaltserlaubnis (residence permit).

Your Germany student visa file needs Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, the Studienkolleg admission letter, a motivation letter, a CV in table form and health insurance from arrival. Add a recognised language certificate such as Goethe-Institut, OeSD or telc; Duolingo, PTE and TOEFL Home Edition aren’t accepted for applications in India.

Parents: without a Germany blocked account, you have only two other proof of funds options. One is a Verpflichtungserklaerung (a formal obligation letter from a sponsor who lives in Germany); the other is a German or EU scholarship. A scholarship that pays only tuition doesn’t replace the blocked account: the German Missions then ask for that account or a sponsorship letter as well. Parental income and the Indian affidavit of support don’t count. A common refusal we see: money left in an ordinary NRE or NRO savings account.

Missed 15 July 2026? KIT’s next T-course start is the 2027 summer intake in Germany: apply November to 15 January, sit the test on 13 February 2027 and start on 1 March 2027. Apply in November: you need a visa before the test, and visas can take several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

At least 70% of the maximum overall marks in Class XII from Winter Semester 2026/27, from any board. APS applications filed before 15 March 2026 follow the older rules. The update doesn’t mention JEE Advanced, so JEE rankers should confirm the 70% question with APS India.

Tuition is usually free: state-funded universities typically charge none, and state-funded Studienkollegs charge none, so you pay only the semester contribution. Baden-Wuerttemberg charges new non-EU students EUR 1,500 (approx. INR 1.60 lakh) a semester; TUM charges too. Every route still needs EUR 11,904 (approx. INR 12.69 lakh) in a blocked account, or another accepted proof of funds.

English-taught Studienkollegs are few: FH Aachen’s Freshman Program and Constructor University’s foundation year, which leads into specified Constructor bachelor’s programmes, are two examples. For the visa, an English-taught preparatory course needs at least B2 English. Then you need an English-taught bachelor’s: only around 300 exist, against around 2,000 in German.

Yes. A Studienkolleg place gets the same student residence permit as a degree. That permit allows 140 full days or 280 half days of work a year; a day of up to four hours is a half day. See our guide to part-time jobs in Germany.

After a successful degree in Germany, you can get a residence permit to look for a job, for up to 18 months, as long as your living costs are covered during that time. Our post-study work visa in Germany guide explains what that permit needs.

Ardent Overseas is a study-abroad consultancy that has worked with Indian students for over 10 years, with offices in Hyderabad and Tirupati. Our counsellors check Class XII percentages against the APS rule, match students to a Studienkolleg track, and prepare blocked-account and visa files.
