Selecting the right career from the various options available today has become a daunting and difficult process. Many students continue to choose careers simply because their friends do the same thing or because their parents have told them to do the same. However, this may not be the best way to do it.
Here are six steps to help you start your research and choose a university abroad. Before we get into the details, here are some general points to keep in mind throughout:
1.Listen to your heart and your head
They can take you in different directions, but both have valid arguments to make. Often it can be helpful to start by going straight to what you are passionate about and then start thinking about it carefully.
2.Be honest with yourself
Seriously, Any type of degree is a big commitment, but studying abroad even more. Make sure it’s something you want to do rather than something you feel you need to do. If you do it because you want to, it will be easier to keep going through difficult times.
3.Carefully research and use multiple sources
Studying a degree can take anywhere from one to four years and can be quite expensive. It will certainly be a worthwhile investment and a life-changing adventure, but make sure you know the facts.

4.Identify your “essential” requirements
Refine your research by deciding what you really want to do or avoid. For example, maybe you only want to study abroad at a university where the language of instruction is Spanish?

Perhaps you have a specific budget or want to be a few hours’ flight from home? At this point, it is best to set clear guidelines for your research. Here are some examples to consider:
- Only universities in a particular country / region
- No universities in big bustling cities
- Only highly classified universities (in general or in a particular subject)
This step is particularly useful if you want to study a subject offered in a very wide range of universities. If you want to specialize in a particularly rare field (such as maritime archeology), you will probably find that you already have a narrower field to focus on.
5.Choose your subject
This is where things could get trickier. Many people know immediately what they want to study, but for some the choice is less obvious. If you are unsure of what to study, you may want to consider a liberal arts degree known to offer a more flexible program.

6.Attend university fairs and open days
Choosing a foreign university that is right for you will require a lot of research. For international students, most of these operations are often done online or through university brochures.
