Study in Ireland After 12th for Indian Students: 2027 Routes, Marks and Costs

Study in Ireland After 12th for Indian Students
Study in Ireland After 12th for Indian Students

Yes. To study in Ireland after 12th for Indian students, you can go straight into a bachelor’s degree if you clear a university’s minimum, or take a foundation year first if you don’t. In November 2026, minimums for most boards run from 65% on some University of Galway courses through 80% at Dublin City University (DCU); at University College Dublin (UCD), CBSE and CISCE need up to 90%. If you sat a Telangana or Andhra Pradesh board, each university’s state-board rule is here, with a dated plan for September 2027 entry.

Key Takeaways

  • Telangana or Andhra Pradesh board at 80%+: start with DCU, University College Cork (UCC), Maynooth, Galway and Technological University (TU) Dublin.
  • Below 65%: foundation entry opens at 40% at DCU (40% in Maths; fewer options possible below 50%) and 50% at TU Dublin.
  • Every student visa needs an approved English test, whatever your university waives.
  • Computer Science at TU Dublin: EUR 42,840 (about INR 45.56 lakh) for year one, on 2026/27 tuition and median Dublin costs.
  • Visa funds: at least EUR 10,000 (about INR 10.63 lakh) for year one, plus fees.
  • An honours bachelor’s gives 12 months to job-hunt on Stamp 1G, not two years.

An Indian school-leaver enters Irish higher education by one of two routes: direct entry to a bachelor’s degree, or a foundation year first. In 2026, Trinity College Dublin’s India entry rules start at 80-85% in six Grade XII subjects, so Class 12 marks decide which route stays open at each university.

Studying in Ireland is commonly chosen because it’s English-speaking and has jobs in IT, business and healthcare. Most undergraduate degrees take three to four years, depending on the course and university.

Class 12 Marks and State-Board Rules by University

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh aren’t named in these entry rules. Here’s what to do if your state board isn’t named:

  • Apply directly: DCU, UCC, Maynooth and Galway take recognised state boards at the same marks as CBSE.
  • Expect a higher bar: TU Dublin puts boards it doesn’t name under “all other state boards”, at 80%+.
  • Ask in writing first: send your board and marks to UCD, UL and Trinity. The table shows what each says.
  • Medicine at RCSI: for 2027 entry it needs a CBSE or CISCE certificate, so state boards aren’t listed. It also wants five subjects and 75% in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics or Maths.

Every figure is a minimum, and at Trinity, UCC and UL it doesn’t guarantee a place. Subject grades are in our requirements guide.

UCD wants the SAT or an equivalent for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and the SAT for Actuarial and Financial Studies. The QS World University Rankings 2027 put Trinity at 75 and UCD at =100, Ireland’s top two.

UCD and Maynooth Engineering want 85% in Class 12 Maths, so a subject minimum can rule out a course even when your average clears it. Fix a course in Ireland first, then the university.

How to Apply From India for September 2027: Direct, Not CAO

Applicants living in India usually apply directly to each Irish university, not through the CAO (Central Applications Office, the shared portal for EU applicants). For September 2027 entry, RCSI Medicine’s window runs 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 and DCU’s degree applications close on 1 July, so the first deadline depends on the course.

Galway, UCD and Maynooth already take applications. Our suggested plan, published dates marked:

  1. Now to January 2027: shortlist by course and board, book your English test, apply with your marks so far and ask about a conditional offer. RCSI Medicine closes on 15 January 2027 (published); privately funded applicants register for its Casper test before then.
  2. February to May 2027: sit boards, then send final marks and scholarship forms.
  3. May to July 2027: pay the fee deposit, line up funds, then apply for the visa.
  4. 1 July (published): DCU closes, and UCD recommends visa-required students apply before this date.

Trinity and Galway ask for a personal statement and two recommendation letters. Our Ireland counsellors in Hyderabad run this shortlist and board check with families.

IELTS and English Tests: University Scores vs the Visa Rule

Indian applicants face two English checks: the university’s and the visa office’s. In 2026, an approved English test is compulsory for all student visas, and failing to submit one means refusal. A Class 12 English waiver can satisfy a university, but neither it nor a school letter saying you were taught in English replaces the test for the visa.

  • University bar: IELTS 6.5 with nothing below 6.0 at Galway and UL (Academic only). Trinity also takes TOEFL iBT 90, PTE Academic 69 or Duolingo 120, with section minimums. Some programmes ask more.
  • Admission waivers: 80% in Class 12 English at UCD and DCU (CBSE or CISCE). Galway’s Class 12 English waiver names neither Telangana nor Andhra Pradesh, so plan on a test.
  • Visa floor: IELTS Academic 5.0 for a degree, 4.0 for a Level 5 foundation course, with a certificate issued within 2 years of your course start.

Year-One Budget: Tuition, Living Costs and Scholarships

Parents, the year-one bill to study in Ireland after 12th for Indian students is tuition plus 12 months of living costs:

EUR 42,840

TU Dublin Computer Science, median Dublin costs (about INR 45.56 lakh) EUR 13,500 tuition, 2026/27 (INR 14.36 lakh) + 12 x EUR 2,445 (INR 31.20 lakh)

EUR 59,435

UCD Computer Science, median Dublin costs (about INR 63.20 lakh) EUR 30,095 tuition, 2027/28 (INR 32.00 lakh) + the same living costs

In Cork, 12 months at UCC’s lowest of about EUR 1,181 plus EUR 19,514 for Arts makes about EUR 33,686. For a four-year degree, expect about four times these figures.

Rooms run EUR 830 to EUR 1,200 a month in Dublin (lowest to median). Add one-offs: EUR 300 for your Irish Residence Permit (IRP, your immigration registration) and up to EUR 690 for the private health insurance all non-EEA students need.

From our counselling desk: In our Hyderabad and Tirupati counselling sessions, the visa funds figure is where parents pause, because they assume it's a fee they lose. It isn't. It's money you show you can access.

Scholarships are a bonus:

Student Visa at 17 or 18: Funds and Under-18 Documents

Landing before 18 adds paperwork and can add homestay bills, so check your date of birth first.

Must be 18 by 31 December of your entry year: TU Dublin (September starts) and RCSI Medicine. If you land before 18 at TU Dublin, you stay in homestay until 18.

An unaccompanied under-18 adds to the visa file: birth certificate; both parents’ notarised consent (signed before a solicitor or notary). The consent names your carer and Irish guardian. Add parents’ passport or ID copies, any sole-custody court order and your Irish address. If a parent isn’t joining you while you’re under 18, add Garda clearance (an Irish police check) for that address.

  • Funds: immediate access to at least EUR 10,000 for year one, separate from fees. For later years, show at least that, plus fees, through loans, savings or a sponsor’s income.
  • Fees: pay at least EUR 6,000 before applying. If the fee is EUR 6,000 or less, pay it all. Some colleges want the full fee first.
  • Sponsors: you and any sponsor show six months of bank statements, and sponsors must consent. Crypto, shares, mutual funds, chit funds and gold valuations don’t count, and a loan sanction letter alone isn’t enough.

Apply once you hold your unconditional offer and documents, up to 90 days before travel. Study visas usually take 4-8 weeks, not guaranteed.

After the Degree: Part-Time Work, Stamp 1G and PR

In the offer-letter reviews we run, students often assume a two-year stay-back. That comes only at master’s level or above, so plan around 12 months after an honours bachelor’s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you meet a university’s Class 12 minimum, its English score and its age rule. If your marks fall short, a foundation year can still lead to a degree place. Galway, UCD and Maynooth already take September 2027 applications, so start before boards.

80% gives the most choice: DCU asks it of any recognised state board, TU Dublin of all other state boards. Below that, try Galway from 65%, Maynooth from 70% and UCC from 75%, by course. Neither board is named, so ask UCD, UL and Trinity in writing.

For Computer Science, tuition and a year’s living on median Dublin costs come to EUR 42,840 (about INR 45.56 lakh) at TU Dublin on its 2026/27 fee. At UCD it’s EUR 59,435 (about INR 63.20 lakh). Medicine tuition alone is EUR 65,170 (about INR 69.30 lakh) at UCD.

Plan on paying. The nearest thing is a 100% tuition award from UCD’s limited Global Excellence or competitive Aryabhata schemes, neither guaranteed. Even then, the visa needs access to at least EUR 10,000 (about INR 10.63 lakh) for your first year.

Not directly. An honours bachelor’s gives you 12 months on Stamp 1G to find graduate work, and you then need an employment permit. After 21 months on a Critical Skills permit or 57 on a General permit, you can seek Stamp 4.
