The top courses in Canada for Indian students in 2026 are engineering, nursing, computer science, data science, cybersecurity, business and accounting, and supply chain management. Two rules decide which of these pay off. The first is whether a college version of the course qualifies for the post-graduation work permit (PGWP), which lets you stay and work in Canada after you graduate. The second is whether the job sits in a 2026 Express Entry (PR) category. Our guide to studying in Canada covers the wider move. In 2026/27, the average international undergraduate fee is CAD 42,062 a year in the Statistics Canada international undergraduate tuition table. If you’re worried about paying that much for a course that leads nowhere after graduation, the table below rates nine groups of courses on both rules, plus fees, job outlook and pay.
Key Takeaways
In 2026/27, average international undergraduate tuition in Canada runs from CAD 30,668 (INR 20.7 lakh) for nursing to CAD 47,386 (INR 32.0 lakh) for engineering in the Statistics Canada tuition table. Both are tuition only; rent and food come on top.

A degree, including an MBA, qualifies for the PGWP in any subject. The PGWP column applies to college programs only. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) checks each one by its CIP code, a six-digit subject code, on IRCC’s list of PGWP-eligible CIP codes. Job Bank rates job prospects on a five-step scale: Very limited, Limited, Moderate, Good, Very good. Yearly pay is our estimate, Canada-wide and before tax: Job Bank’s national median hourly wage (2023-2024 reference period) times 1,950 hours, a 37.5-hour week for 52 weeks. Tuition is the Statistics Canada field average. Rupee figures use CAD 1 = INR 67.57, the live Google-published rate on 5 October 2026.
Across tech and engineering, median pay differs by no more than about CAD 10,000 a year, so the PR category and PGWP columns tell these courses apart better than salary does. Parents: the tuition column is a yearly average, so multiply it by the years in the program and add living costs before you decide how big an education loan you need. Our cost of studying in Canada breakdown covers rent, food and the funds you must show for the visa.
If you want PR, engineering is the safer pick: engineers are on the 2026 STEM list and software developers aren’t. Express Entry is Canada’s main PR system. Under category-based selection, some PR rounds invite only people whose job is in a listed group. That is the fast-track column in the table.
In 2026, the Express Entry category-based selection page lists the jobs in each group. The ones that matter for these courses:
A category doesn’t guarantee a job in the province where you study. For 2025-2027, mechanical and electrical engineers rate only Limited in Job Bank’s Ontario outlook for mechanical engineers, while civil engineers rate Moderate. If you’ll study in Ontario and can pick your branch, civil has the better chance there. Nursing also does well outside Ontario: in the 2025-2027 British Columbia outlook for registered nurses, nurses rate Good.
Trades and early childhood teaching have a PR category too. College programs for electricians and early childhood educators both qualify for the PGWP. Across 2025-2027, electricians rate Moderate in the Ontario outlook for electricians. The electrician wage report puts their median at CAD 35.00 an hour, about CAD 68,300 a year full time by our estimate.
Early childhood educators rate Good over 2025-2027 in the Ontario outlook for early childhood educators. The catch is pay. The early childhood educator wage report puts their median at CAD 22.30 an hour. That’s about CAD 43,500 a year full time by our estimate, the lowest of any course here.
Say you hold a BTech in computer science and want to stay in software. In 2026, software developers and data scientists are not on the STEM list, so they’re never picked in STEM rounds. That isn’t a PR ban.
You compete in the open Express Entry rounds on your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, a points total built mainly from your age, education, English or French and Canadian work experience.
Provinces run their own PR route too. The Provincial Nominee Program lets a province nominate people whose skills, education and work experience can help its economy. A nomination through an Express Entry stream adds 600 points to your CRS score.
The province you study in matters more than the course name. For 2025-2027, software developers and programmers rate Moderate in Job Bank’s British Columbia outlook for software developers, one step better than Ontario. Data scientists show the same gap: they also rate Moderate in the British Columbia outlook for data scientists. If software is your field and you can choose, shortlist British Columbia schools next to Ontario ones.
An MBA costs more again: in 2026/27, the regular MBA averages CAD 48,222 a year for international students, by Statistics Canada’s count. Entry-level business roles have no fast-track PR group. In 2026, the senior managers category needs at least 12 months of full-time Canadian work in the past 3 years, so it can’t help a fresh MBA graduate. Our master’s in Canada guide compares MBA and MSc options side by side.
From our counselling desk: For a software career, pay for a one-year master's over a one-year PG certificate if the budget allows. With software roles rated Limited in Ontario, a job search can run long, and the master's three-year PGWP can give you that time where the certificate's one year may not. On a college budget, a 2-year diploma with an eligible CIP code can get the same three years.
In 2026, college diplomas and certificates in business administration, accounting, hospitality and finance are all missing from IRCC’s PGWP field-of-study list. Study one of these at a college and you get no work permit after you graduate. A university degree, including an MBA, qualifies in any subject.
If you’re applying now, a college program must be in an eligible subject, judged by its CIP code. For the top courses in Canada for Indian students, that check matters most for business. IRCC won’t add or remove any subject in 2026 under the PGWP field of study requirement, so today’s list is the one that applies to you.
Fail at college (not on the list):
Pass at college (on the list):
Look-alike names sit on opposite sides of the list: IT project management is on it, general project management isn’t; data analytics is on it, business analytics isn’t. A course name doesn’t tell you its code. In 2026-27, Conestoga College’s one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate (Ontario’s name for a PG certificate) in Supply Chain Management – Global charges CAD 16,808.58 in international tuition. Conestoga’s Supply Chain Management – Global page lists it. It qualifies for the PGWP only if its CIP code is 52.0203, and Conestoga’s program pages don’t print the code. When a student brings us a college offer, the CIP code is the first thing we ask for. Do the same before you pay:
Check how long a course is before you pick it: the length sets how long you can work afterwards.
| Program type and length | Longest possible PGWP |
|---|---|
| Diploma or PG certificate, 8 months to under 2 years | Up to the length of the program |
| Any program of 2 years or longer | 3 years |
| Master’s of 8 months to under 2 years | 3 years |
That last row matters most for a 4-year BTech holder. Under the PGWP length rules, a one-year PG certificate gets you at most one year of work, while a one-year master’s can get three. This choice doesn’t apply to Class 12 students, because a bachelor’s degree qualifies for the PGWP in any subject; our guide to studying in Canada after 12th lists the options.
Many programs, especially in engineering, include co-op work terms, work placements built into the course. Since 1 April 2026, full-time college and university students (not language or prep courses) don’t need a separate co-op work permit for them. Your school must confirm in a letter that the work term is required. You must be studying full time, the work term must make up 50% or less of the program, and your study permit must say you can work on campus.
3-year degree holders: University of Toronto asks for a 4-year bachelor’s, or a 3-year bachelor’s plus a master’s, with at least 7/10 or first class, in its international credentials equivalencies. McGill and other universities set their own equivalency rules, so check each one. For BSc and BCom holders, we read each university’s degree-equivalency rule before we look at fees, because it can rule out a school outright.
The permit application itself, from timing to documents, is in our Canada post-study work visa guide.
Get in Touch
Which course gets PR in Canada most easily?
No course guarantees PR. The courses with the clearest route lead to a job in a 2026 Express Entry category: nursing, civil, mechanical or electrical engineering, cybersecurity, electrician trades and early childhood education. In 2026, French-language proficiency is also its own category, so strong French helps on any course.
Which course is most in demand in Canada?
Nursing shows the clearest demand. For 2025-2027, job prospects in Ontario rate Good for licensed practical nurses and Very good for registered nurses. Job Bank’s median puts licensed practical nurses at about CAD 61,100 (INR 41.3 lakh) a year full time by our estimate, and practical nursing leads into the same healthcare category.
Can I get PR after a 2-year diploma in Canada?
Yes, but the diploma is a step, not the PR itself. In 2026, a program of 2 years or longer can get a 3-year PGWP, which gives you time to build Canadian work experience for Express Entry. The diploma’s CIP code must be on the eligible list first, or there is no PGWP at all.
Is an MBA in Canada worth it for Indian students?
Yes, if you already want a management role. A university MBA qualifies for the PGWP in any subject, and in 2026 a master’s of 8 months to under 2 years can still get a 3-year permit. Entry-level business roles have no Express Entry category; the senior managers category needs 12 months of full-time Canadian work in the past 3 years.
What IELTS score do I need for a PGWP?
Take IELTS General Training. In 2026, IRCC’s PGWP language table counts 6.0 in each of reading, writing, listening and speaking as CLB 7, the level university graduates need. College graduates need CLB 5: 4.0 in reading and 5.0 in writing, listening and speaking.
