Study in Canada After 12th for Indian Students: 2027 Routes, Marks & Costs

Study in Canada after 12th for Indian Students
Study in Canada after 12th for Indian Students

Yes: Indian students can study in Canada after 12th. The routes are a two-year college diploma or three-year advanced diploma, a four-year bachelor’s degree or a Quebec CEGEP (a two- or three-year college between school and university). The route you pick decides whether you can stay and work after graduating. A college diploma only earns that work permit if its subject is on Canada’s approved list (the Post-Graduation Work Permit field of study requirement); a bachelor’s degree works in any subject. Your board, your course’s subject code and the 2027 dates decide the plan; find your row in the table below.

Key Takeaways

  • CBSE science: choose Standard Maths, not Applied, in Class 11. U of T’s Arts and Science deadline is 15 January 2027.
  • State board: book IELTS early. UBC’s and York’s English waivers cover CBSE and CISCE only.
  • Business administration, accounting, hospitality and marketing diplomas don’t qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), the permit to work after you graduate. A bachelor’s degree has no field rule.
  • Outside Quebec, proof of funds for one student is CAD 23,448 (approx. INR 15.84 lakh) a year, on top of tuition.
  • Canada’s old fast-track route for Indian students, the Student Direct Stream, closed on 8 November 2024, so everyone now applies the normal way and shows funds.

The right Canada route after Class 12 depends on board, stream and marks, not on one national cut-off. Humber Polytechnic asks for 70 in your program’s required subjects, from CBSE and state-board students alike.

For a bachelor’s degree, most guidance puts the minimum at around 65-70% in Class 12, varying by program; selective universities ask more.

Quebec: a CEGEP needs a CAQ (Quebec Acceptance Certificate, Quebec’s own permission to study there) instead of the provincial letter (PAL) other provinces use.

Arts students usually choose sociology, history, political science, psychology or journalism and media. Study those as a degree; a communication diploma (code 09.0101) isn’t on the PGWP list. Science students usually look at engineering, computer science or nursing; commerce students at a BBA or BCom. See courses in Canada after 12th for full lists. Other universities often recommended after 12th include the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.

Start about a year before you want to fly; our study in Canada guide for Indian students covers the country-wide rules.

Diploma or Degree After 12th: How Your Course Decides the PGWP

Most families we counsel in Hyderabad think a Canadian college is a step down from a university. It isn’t. Choose by the work permit instead.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets you work in Canada after you graduate, and IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) sets different PGWP eligibility rules for each route:

  • Degree route: any subject qualifies, but your English must reach CLB 7 on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (Canada’s English and French scale): IELTS General Training 6.0 in every skill.
  • Diploma route: your subject must be on the approved list, and your English must reach CLB 5 (IELTS General Training 4.0 reading, 5.0 writing, listening and speaking). The subject rule covers every study permit application made on or after 1 November 2024, so it covers yours.

For the work permit, IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, taken in person and under 2 years old when you apply. The IELTS Academic used for admission doesn’t count. A program of 2 years or more can earn a permit of up to 3 years. A shorter program of at least 8 months can earn one up to its own length. Our Canada post-study work visa guide has more.

Every subject has a CIP code, and IRCC’s PGWP-eligible list shows which codes qualify. Humber prints the code on its program pages. IRCC froze the list for 2026, so recheck your code when you apply in 2027.

Computer programming diploma11.0201Yes
Humber Business Administration advanced diploma52.0201No
Accounting diploma52.0301No

Finance and marketing aren’t on the list either; Humber’s business degree still leads to a PGWP. If you’re from commerce, pick the degree or an eligible field, and check the code before you pay a deposit.

Class 12 Marks, Board and English Rules for Canada

CBSE Applied Mathematics doesn’t meet U of T’s calculus requirement for business, engineering and science. Waterloo won’t accept it for Computer Science either, and wants 90% in Maths and one other subject, plus Class 12 English and 85% overall. So the maths paper you pick in Class 11 decides where you can apply. Your board matters more than your percentage:

  • University of Toronto: takes CBSE and CISCE certificates directly and considers state-board results only if they’re excellent, case by case, so add a second university or a college. U of T makes the SAT optional, though Engineering applicants who have taken it must report every score.
  • Waterloo: takes CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates with First or Second Division, judged on Class 10, final Class 11 and predicted Class 12 marks.
  • University of British Columbia (UBC): waives the English test with 75% in Class 12 English, but only for CBSE or CISCE schools. Everyone else needs IELTS 6.5 (no part below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 125 or PTE 65.
  • York: may waive the test after four years of English-medium CBSE or CISCE study, but Class 12 English alone never does.
  • Colleges: Humber diplomas need IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5. Seneca degrees need a 65% average across six senior courses (six university-entrance Class 12 subjects).

If you’re on a state board, don’t plan around an English-test waiver. Book one IELTS sitting during Class 12 and aim for 6.5 with no band below 6.0: that one score meets Humber’s and UBC’s degree requirement and every other IELTS score listed above. Other schools’ scores are in our requirements to study in Canada guide.

First-Year Cost and Proof of Funds for a Class 12 Applicant (2026-27)

For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a student applying alone to study outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 (approx. INR 15.84 lakh) a year for living costs, under IRCC’s Proof of financial support rules. Proof must also cover first-year tuition and travel.

Last column = year-1 tuition + CAD 23,448 funds + CAD 150 permit fee + CAD 85 biometrics fee, each per person on IRCC’s citizenship and immigration fee list. Four-year totals are in our cost of studying in Canada breakdown.

All INR conversions use the live Google-published rate captured on 2026-10-06: CAD 1 ≈ ₹67.5723. Rates fluctuate intraday; figures are indicative.

  • Parents, GIC or loan: a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate, a locked deposit at a Canadian bank) is optional. A bank education loan counts, so an SBI sanction letter can cover part of the funds.
  • Bank statements: IRCC wants six months of statements, including the month you apply or the month before, showing where the money came from.
  • Scholarships: an award can cut tuition, but you still show the full CAD 23,448 for living costs. See our Canada scholarships list.
  • Health insurance: you’ll usually need cover, and how you get it varies by province. Ask your school which plan applies and budget for it.
  • Part-time work: IRCC’s work off campus rules allow up to 24 hours a week in term and unlimited hours in scheduled breaks. You must study full-time in a program of at least six months leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.

When to Apply for January, May or September 2027

Say you’re a CBSE student in Hyderabad with boards in March 2027. To study in Canada after 12th that September, you apply before results arrive, starting this autumn.

  1. Shortlist and test. Check each program’s subject code, then sit IELTS or another accepted test.
  2. Apply to universities. With several Ontario universities, U of T included, one OUAC (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre) application covers them all. If U of T is your only Ontario choice, and you live outside Canada and have never studied there, its own International Application costs CAD 196. Arts and Science closes on 15 January 2027. Most applications ask for your Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and a passport copy. Some programs also want a statement of purpose, teacher references, a resume or a transfer certificate.
  3. Apply to colleges early. To qualify for one of Humber’s entrance awards for January 2027, accept your offer before 30 October 2026 and apply for the study permit by 6 November 2026. For September 2027, accept before 9 July and apply for the permit by 16 July 2027. Missing them costs only the award, not your place. Missed January? Humber’s Early Childhood Education diploma also has a May start.
  4. Accept your offer (the Letter of Acceptance) and pay the deposit. Your school must be a DLI (Designated Learning Institution), approved for international students.
  5. Get your PAL. Bachelor’s and college applicants still need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), the province’s letter saying you hold one of its limited study spaces; your school explains how to get one. A 2026 PAL expires on 31 December 2026, so a permit filed in 2027 needs a 2027 PAL, which only has to be valid on the day you apply.
  6. Apply for the study permit. With the Student Direct Stream closed, everyone applies the normal way. IRCC also recommends a letter of explanation: why you want to study in Canada, and that you understand a student’s duties. Indian applicants need an immigration medical exam for stays over six months. As of 1 October 2026, IRCC processing times showed 6 weeks for applicants in India. Our Canada student visa guide has the checklist.

From our counselling desk: in our Hyderabad files, smooth applications almost always come from families who documented funds months ahead. Students who rushed in May and June for September usually slipped to January.

Frequently Asked Questions

The recorded figures are lower, though still high. In December 2025, ICEF Monitor reported a 71% refusal rate for Indian applicants against a 58% all-country average. In August 2025, IRCC data shared with Reuters showed 74% refused, according to Gulf News. The part you control is showing funds clearly and early.

Yes. Under 17, you must come with a parent or guardian or have a custodian, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who looks after you. From 17 it’s optional, though an officer can ask for one. British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories treat you as a minor until 19.

Usually, yes. A gap after Class 12 is usually considered if you explain it in a gap letter, backed by a work or experience letter where you have one. Guidance sets no standard maximum length, so account for every month of the gap.

Rarely. U of T’s Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship needs your school to nominate you. It covers tuition, books, incidental fees and residence for four years, for 37 scholars a year. Each school nominates one student a year (9 October 2026 for 2027 entry), so for 2028 entry, ask your principal early in Class 12.

Not at U of T. Its MD Program page for international applicants asks applicants educated outside Canada for a completed non-medical bachelor’s degree equal to a four-year Canadian degree. The realistic path is a science bachelor’s first, then a medical school application.
