UCAS is the shared admissions service that runs a UK undergraduate application from submission through offers, Extra and Clearing. At the January 2026 equal-consideration point, UCAS recorded 124,830 international undergraduate applicants, up 5.1 per cent from 118,800 in its 2026 cycle applicant figures for the 14 January deadline. It does not touch immigration.
The UCAS form runs to several sections, covering residency, nationality, contact details, education, employment, choices and a reference. UCL requires an academic reference; work or other non-academic references cannot be considered (UCL, UCAS explained). Four sections decide an Indian applicant's file.
From our counselling desk: across the Indian files we prepared for the 2026 cycle, the most common rework was the education section, not the personal statement. Students entered a school-calculated aggregate instead of the board's printed percentage, and at confirmation a two-point gap reads as a discrepancy.
Three set questions have replaced the free-form personal statement. From 2026 entry onwards, the format allows a minimum of 350 characters per answer and a maximum of 4,000 characters across all three answers combined (University of Dundee, new UCAS personal statement format). Budget the characters before you write.
For 2027 entry, 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time is the application deadline for all courses to Oxford or Cambridge, and most courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and veterinary science (University of Bath, important dates for 2027 applicants). Most other undergraduate courses use the 13 January 2027 equal-consideration deadline.
Indian boards convert into a published percentage, and both the bar and the board list move by College. Edinburgh's Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences accepts CBSE and CISCE only, asking Standard XII applicants for overall 80% with three subjects at 75%, including English (University of Edinburgh, India entry requirements). That is a minimum, not a guaranteed offer.
A foundation year is the standard route into a UK degree for applicants below the direct-entry percentage. The University of Manchester places students from regional boards outside its direct-entry list on INTO Manchester partnership programmes at 65% or higher (University of Manchester, India country information). The route adds one year before the degree begins.
Either route costs an extra year and an extra year of fees. Weigh that against the alternative honestly: a rejected cycle costs a year too, and leaves you with nothing to show for it.
Between the 2026 and 2027 cycles, the application fee rose about 19 per cent: GBP 28.95 for up to five choices for 2026/27 entry, and GBP 34.50 for up to five choices for 2027/28 entry (Manchester Metropolitan University, seven steps to apply). Budget it as a one-off, not per university.
For 2027 entry, UCAS Extra opens on Thursday, 25 February 2027 for applicants who have used all five of your choices on your original application and you're not holding an offer. Declined offers and unsuccessful choices both count, and 1 July 2027 is the last day to add an Extra choice.
