CAS Full Form in UK: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (2026)

CAS Full Form in UK
CAS Full Form in UK

The CAS full form in UK is Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is the reference number your university gives you once it has accepted you, and you can’t apply for a Student visa without one. The CAS itself is an online record that your university creates on the Home Office system, not a paper letter. A CAS stays valid for six months from the day your university creates it, so a wrong detail or a late CAS can cost you your intake. If you hold a conditional offer, meet its conditions, accept it, pay any deposit it asks for and pass your university’s checks. Your university then sends you the CAS.

Key Takeaways

  • The CAS full form in UK is Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is an online Home Office record, not a letter, offer or visa.
  • If you start in January 2027, pay your deposit and pass your university’s checks before its cut-off. Bradford’s is 30 November 2026.
  • If you already hold a CAS, match every field to your passport and apply within six months of the day your university created it.
  • If you start in September 2027, get an unconditional offer first. For an Imperial master’s, expect your CAS no earlier than 3 months before the course.
  • If your visa is refused, you need a new CAS to apply again. After an invalid or withdrawn application, the same CAS still works.

In the CAS full form in UK, “confirmation” means an entry on the Home Office’s online system, not a paper document. A CAS is none of these three things.

  • A CAS is not a letter. The CAS statement you receive is a printout of the online record.
  • A CAS is not an offer. Your university creates it after you accept your offer.
  • A CAS is not a visa. Holding one doesn’t guarantee you a visa, and the UK student visa requirements for Indian students still apply.

Only a licensed student sponsor can create a CAS. That is a university the Home Office has approved to take international students. Before you pay a deposit anywhere on your study in the UK shortlist, search for the university on the Register of licensed sponsors: students. The licence must still be valid on the day your visa is decided. If the university loses it before then, your visa is refused even when the rest of your application is right.

Your CAS number is a unique reference number. It is a long code, and at King’s College London it runs to 14 digits. Copy and paste it into your visa form, and never retype it.

How to Get a CAS from a UK University

Say you hold a conditional offer for a January 2027 master’s. At the University of Essex, for one, you do four things before you get a CAS.

  1. Meet every condition on your offer, so that it becomes an unconditional offer (one with no conditions left).
  2. Accept that unconditional offer.
  3. Pay the tuition deposit, if Essex asks you for one.
  4. Pass the pre-CAS checks. Essex asks for your documents, a questionnaire and a financial check. Where it requires one, you also record a credibility interview, which tests whether you’re a genuine student.

Get your papers ready before you ask for the CAS. Most universities check your money before they issue a CAS, usually by asking for bank statements. Bradford checks your financial evidence and your TB certificate (a certificate showing your chest X-ray found no tuberculosis) before it issues a CAS.

SOAS wants a passport that stays valid for at least six months after your programme starts. If you’re renewing your passport, wait for the new one before you request a SOAS CAS, so that the details match.

For an Imperial master’s, expect your CAS no earlier than 3 months before your course starts. Loughborough emails yours up to five working days after it receives your deposit.

For the January intake in the UK, three universities have set these cut-offs.

  • University of Bradford wants your deposit and CAS documents by 30 November 2026.
  • Loughborough University London wants your CAS deposit by 4 January 2027.
  • Queen Mary issues its last CAS for January courses on 11 January 2027.

Parents: the deposit leaves your account before any visa exists. If you withdraw, or Bradford can’t issue your CAS after its checks, it refunds the deposit minus £200. Bradford keeps the whole deposit if it finds serious false statements, fraud or other deception in your application or interview. If the interview worries you, look at universities in the UK without an interview.

What a CAS Statement Contains: Field-by-Field Check

Your CAS must record your course title, academic level, start and end dates, weekly study hours, main study address and fees under the 2026 UK visa rules. Your visa form draws on those fields, so get a wrong date or a misspelt name fixed before you apply, not after.

If your CAS leaves out a payment or a scholarship, you’ll have to show that much more money in your bank.

If your course is at degree level or above and your university holds what the Home Office calls a “track record of compliance”, you don’t have to send certificates with your visa application. That status belongs to the university, not to you. Otherwise you send a certificate or transcript for every qualification listed under Evidence used to obtain offer. Ask your university which applies, and keep the certificates ready either way.

From our counselling desk: The name is the field we correct most often. In the CAS checks we ran for the 2026-27 intake, the usual cause was an initial that a Class 12 certificate spells out in full. Ask your university to confirm every fix in writing, and never accept "we'll fix it later".

CAS Validity and When You Can Apply for Your Student Visa

Under the 2026 UK visa rules, a CAS lasts six months from the day your university creates it, not the day its email reaches you. Note that date the moment your CAS arrives. Six months after it, an unused CAS expires.

At the University of Westminster, for one, you must request a new CAS, and an application made with an expired one is refused.

Your course start date sets a second window. On the day you apply from India, two things must both be true.

After you apply, a decision usually comes within 3 weeks.

Some master’s and doctoral courses in subjects such as science, engineering and technology need an ATAS certificate, a UK security clearance, before you apply for the visa. Universities such as Imperial and Bristol go further and won’t issue your CAS until you hold it.

So apply for ATAS as soon as your offer says your course needs it. It takes at least 30 working days. The certificate lasts 6 months for a visa application, so if your offer comes very early, check that it will still be valid on the day you apply.

CAS Mistakes, Visa Refusal and Reusing a CAS

Whether your CAS still works depends on how your last visa application ended. A refusal means the Home Office looked at your application and said no. An application is rejected as invalid when it is sent back without being looked at, for example because the fee wasn’t paid or you didn’t give fingerprints.

  • If your visa was granted or refused, that CAS is used up. To apply again after a refusal, ask your university for a new CAS number.
  • If your application was rejected as invalid, withdrawn by you, or closed by the Home Office without a decision, you can apply again with the same CAS. It must still be under six months old, and your university must not have withdrawn it.
  • If your university withdraws your CAS, or the Home Office cancels it, don’t apply with it. Any application that relies on it is refused automatically.

If a field is wrong, email your university’s CAS or admissions team before you apply. Queen Mary, for one, may not be able to change the details once it has issued your CAS.

At Westminster you don’t get a new CAS automatically after a refusal. You send a scanned copy of the refusal and of the new evidence for your second application, and its Visa Compliance team decides whether a new CAS can be issued. SOAS doesn’t normally issue a second CAS when the refusal followed a credibility interview, unless there were exceptional circumstances.

If you won’t be able to enrol, tell your university straight away. At Westminster, your CAS is withdrawn if you don’t enrol, which may lead to a visa refusal if you’re still waiting for a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A CAS confirms your place, but the visa still tests your money and documents, so a perfect CAS can still end in refusal if your bank balance falls short. Our UK student visa proof of funds guide shows how much to hold and for how long.

The Home Office bills your university, not you. You usually pay a tuition deposit first. For 2026-27 it’s £5,000 (≈ ₹6.35 lakh) at Bradford, £4,000 (≈ ₹5.08 lakh) at SOAS and £2,500 (≈ ₹3.17 lakh) for taught postgraduate offers at Loughborough. The Home Office visa fee is £558, or INR 73,842 in India on 12 October 2026.

No. Your visa application must quote a CAS reference number, and an offer letter doesn’t carry one. Accepting an unconditional offer is what lets you request the CAS, so a conditional offer can’t get you that far on its own.

Yes, but you can use only one. Once you apply with your chosen CAS, every other CAS stops working, and you must study at the university named on the one you used. Tell the others you’re declining so their records close.

There’s no UK-wide figure, because each university sets its own pace. Recently, a CAS at the Royal College of Art was taking 2 to 3 weeks to issue. For a September start, build that gap into our September intake in the UK timeline.
