Cover Letter for UK Student Visa (2026): Sample & Format for Indian Students

Cover Letter for UK Student Visa
Cover Letter for UK Student Visa

A cover letter for UK student visa applications is an optional letter to UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration), uploaded as a supporting document. It explains what your documents can’t: a parent’s account, a large deposit, a study gap, or a past refusal. For 2026 applications, every student must provide a current passport and a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). Applying from India, you also upload your funds evidence. Coming for 6 months or more, after living in India for at least 6 months? Add a TB certificate.

Key Takeaways

  • A cover letter is optional; from India you upload a passport, a CAS, funds evidence and, for stays of 6 months or more, a TB certificate.
  • Money in a parent’s or legal guardian’s account needs a consent letter plus relationship proof, usually a birth certificate.
  • Address the letter to UKVI, then date and sign it.
  • Your bank balance must stay at or above the amount you need for 28 days in a row, and you must apply within 31 days of the closing date on your latest statement.
  • You needn’t promise to go home. Following your visa conditions can mean leaving when your visa expires, or legally extending it or moving to another visa, such as the Graduate visa.

A cover letter for UK student visa applications is optional. It isn’t on the GOV.UK document list. For 2026 applications that list makes only two documents compulsory: a passport and a CAS. You may need other documents, depending on your circumstances. Write a cover letter only when something in your file needs explaining.

A previous visa refusalLetter on what has changedOptionalWhat has changed, with new evidence
  • Loan letter: dated no more than 6 months before you apply. It must confirm: a student loan to you from a government or regulated lender; the amount; release with no condition except your visa; and the money reaching you or your university before you travel.
  • Official sponsor: the UK or Indian government, the British Council, or an international organisation, international company or university.

If you were refused before because UKVI didn’t believe you were coming to study, it can refuse again without an interview when nothing important has changed or you send no new evidence. Still declare every refusal on the form.

For a self-funded student with an unbroken study record, we usually skip the cover letter and work on the bank statement. Hold your full amount for at least 28 days in a row, ending on your latest statement’s closing date, then apply within 31 days of that date. If your statement closes on 28 November 2026, the hold runs 1 to 28 November and you can apply until 29 December. Apply from 30 November and all 28 days must show a higher amount. Our UK student visa requirements for Indian students guide has the full checklist.

UK student visa cover letter format: what to write and what to leave out

No rule sets a format or a length. Borrow the Royal College of Art’s format for study-gap letters: address yours “To the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)”, then date and sign it. One page is usually enough; two is the usual limit. You sign the cover letter; your parent signs only the consent letter. You upload a scan, so print the letter, sign it by hand, then scan or photograph it into a single PDF. Build it in this order:

  1. Header: your name, passport number, CAS reference and the date. Applicants usually add contact details: address, phone, email.
  2. Your course, university and career plan, matching your CAS statement exactly.
  3. Your academic path, with the month and year of any gap.
  4. Your funds: whose account, and where the money came from.
  5. Anything else needing explanation, then a numbered enclosure list.

The caseworker (the UKVI official who decides your visa) weighs your letter with everything else in your application and, if UKVI interviews you, what you say there. Write only what you’d say at interview.

Leave out:

  • Your admissions statement of purpose (SOP). It argues for a university place, not a visa.
  • A copied template. When many applications look alike, UKVI may interview some of those applicants. If they turn out not to be real students, it can refuse the others without an interview. That includes you, unless your own file shows you’re coming to study. Use your own words.

Myth: the letter must promise you’ll fly home the day the course ends. Reality: caseworkers check whether you’ll follow your visa conditions. Leaving when your visa expires counts. So does staying on legally by extending or moving to another visa, such as the Graduate visa.

Sample cover letter for UK student visa from India

This sample cover letter for UK student visa applications is fictional. Sneha Reddy, a working BTech graduate, plans to study in the UK on her father’s savings. Keep the structure; swap in your own facts and document numbers.

Re: Student visa, Sneha Reddy
Passport number: [passport number]
CAS reference: [CAS number]
[Address], [phone], [email]

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for a Student visa to study the MSc Data Science at [University name], [city outside London], starting in January 2027. Its machine learning modules build on my analytics work, and I plan a data science career in financial services.

I completed my BTech in Computer Science at [college name], Hyderabad, in May 2024. Since July 2024, I have worked full time as a junior data analyst at [employer name]. That work explains my gap: it showed me which skills I lack, and this MSc teaches them. My employment letter and payslips are enclosed (documents 5 and 6).

My father, Mr Ramesh Reddy, is funding my studies from his savings account at [bank name]. His statement (document 3) shows a balance, held for 28 consecutive days, covering the outstanding tuition fee on my CAS plus £10,827 for nine months of living costs outside London. The large credit on 14 October 2026 is his matured fixed deposit (maturity advice, document 4). His consent letter and my birth certificate are documents 7 and 8.

I have never been refused a visa for the UK or any other country. I understand the conditions of the Student visa and intend to follow them.

Enclosures: (1) passport, (2) CAS, (3) bank statement, (4) maturity advice, (5) employment letter, (6) payslips, (7) consent letter, (8) birth certificate, (9) BTech degree, (10) TB test certificate.

Yours faithfully,
Sneha Reddy

Sneha applies on 10 December 2026, after the 30 November change, so she shows the higher maintenance amount (the living-cost money UKVI asks for), even for a January 2027 start.

The outstanding tuition fee in her letter is the unpaid part of her fees for one academic year, and the amount is on her CAS. Fees already paid count only if the CAS shows them or the university gives a receipt.

Cover letter wording after Class 12, for a loan, a study gap or a refusal

Add only the paragraph your file needs:

  • After Class 12 (bachelor’s): “I completed Class 12 ([board]) at [school], [city], in [month, year], with [percentage]. I am applying for the [course] at [University name], starting in [month, year], because [reason linked to your Class 12 subjects]. My [father/mother] funds my studies from [his/her] savings account (document 3); the consent letter and my birth certificate are documents 4 and 5.”
  • Loan-funded: “An education loan of [amount] from [lender], in my name, funds my studies. The lender’s letter, dated [date], within six months before applying, confirms release once my visa is granted, with no other conditions.”
  • Study gap: “From [month, year] to [month, year], I [what you did]. I am returning to study because [reason], and this course builds on that work (document 5).”
  • Previous refusal: “In [month, year], my [country] visa was refused because [reason]. Since then, [what has changed], and I enclose [new evidence].”

A qualifying student loan or official sponsorship needs no 28-day hold.

Applying before you turn 18? You also need written consent from both parents or legal guardians, or from one parent if that parent alone is legally responsible for you. That’s separate from the bank-account consent letter.

If a parent’s or legal guardian’s account holds the money, the application needs a parental consent letter. For 2026 applications that means proof of the relationship and the parent’s written consent to use those funds. Without both documents, the balance does not count.

Send your birth certificate, an adoption certificate, or a court document naming your guardian. An affidavit won’t work: it proves only that someone swore a statement, not the relationship.

Enclose with the consent letter:

A plain letter is enough:

To the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)
8 December 2026

I, Ramesh Reddy, am the father of Sneha Reddy (passport number [passport number]), born on [date of birth]. I consent to Sneha using the funds in my savings account, number [account number], at [bank name], for her tuition fees and living costs at [University name] from January 2027.

Her birth certificate, which names me as her father, is enclosed as proof of our relationship.

Signed: Ramesh Reddy
Address: [address], Hyderabad
Phone: [phone number]

Money in a sibling’s, uncle’s or grandparent’s account doesn’t count, whatever letter you add, and a relative’s promise of future support isn’t evidence of funds. A joint account with your name on it does count. Otherwise, move the money into your own or a parent’s account in time for the 28-day hold. Our UK student visa proof of funds guide covers which accounts count.

From our counselling desk: At our Hyderabad desk, parent-funded files go wrong in the consent letter and relationship document far more often than in the cover letter. Families bring a notarised affidavit instead of a birth certificate, or a parent's name is spelled differently on the bank statement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload it as a supporting document under Additional Information in the online form. It isn’t mandatory, so there’s no dedicated slot. Upload it with its evidence, and number each enclosure so the caseworker can match every claim to its proof.

For courses of nine months or more, applying from 30 November 2026, you need £14,130 (≈ ₹17.94 lakh) in London or £10,827 (≈ ₹13.74 lakh) elsewhere, plus unpaid tuition fees. Apply by 29 November and it’s £13,761 (≈ ₹17.47 lakh) or £10,539 (≈ ₹13.38 lakh). Keep your balance at or above your total for 28 days in a row.

No. Caseworkers check whether you’ll follow your visa conditions, and staying on legally, such as on a Graduate visa, counts as much as going home. Write your real plan in one short line, even if that’s the Graduate visa first.

No. The rules ask only for your parent’s written consent and proof of your relationship, so stamp paper, a notary and an affidavit add nothing. A plain signed letter from your parent is enough, provided the names match the bank statement exactly.

Yes, if your name is on the account. The rules accept an account in your name alone or as a joint account holder. A parent’s or legal guardian’s account also works, with a consent letter and proof of your relationship. One held only by a sibling, uncle or grandparent doesn’t count.
