MDS in UK After BDS in India

There is no MDS in the UK. MDS in UK after BDS in India means choosing between a taught dental master’s, from GBP 31,515 a year, and General Dental Council (GDC) registration. For 2026/27, registration comes through the GDC Overseas Registration Exam (ORE), at GBP 7,567 in fees, or the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS), at GBP 4,554. Missed NEET MDS? No UK programme asks for the score. Your chair hours decide the route, and hours from your BDS itself count if your dean signs, so start with your profile below.

Key Takeaways

  • The UK awards no MDS; only GDC registration, not a master’s, lets you treat patients.
  • ORE fees total GBP 7,567 (INR 9.61 lakh); the LDS costs GBP 4,554 (INR 5.78 lakh) in 2026/27.
  • The ORE and LDS Part 2 each need 1,600 chair hours; LDS Part 1 has no hours rule.
  • Lancashire’s BDS International Route (BDSi) needs 600 hours after you qualify, within the past five years.
  • The 12 courses listed here cost from GBP 31,515 (INR 40.01 lakh) to GBP 70,100 (INR 88.98 lakh) a year.
  • No UK master’s gives specialist-list entry or a National Training Number.
  • No UK route asks for NEET MDS; the GDC asks for IELTS Academic 7.

For the ORE, collect these now:

  • IELTS Academic 7 overall with 6.5 in each skill, on a result under two years old.
  • A UK ENIC Statement of Comparability (an official letter comparing your BDS with a UK degree).
  • Clinical reference forms covering your chair hours, each no more than three months old when you apply, signed by your dean for hours from your BDS itself.
  • A Certificate of Good Standing (from the council you’re registered with), if you’ve already worked as a dentist outside the UK.

The ORE and LDS Part 2 each need at least 1,600 hours treating patients in the dental chair, BDS hours included. The Lancashire BDSi counts only hours after you qualify: 600 in the past five years. With 1,600 hours, both are open: the LDS costs less and starts online from home, but has three parts to the ORE’s two.

A clinical master’s means an MClinDent (Master of Clinical Dentistry) or a DClinDent (Doctor of Clinical Dentistry). A non-clinical MSc, such as Birmingham’s Dental Materials Science course, takes fresh graduates.

From our counselling desk: the dental files we handle split almost evenly between students who want to practise in Britain and students who want a UK speciality to take home. They need opposite advice. The ones who lose money buy the degree first and find out about the licence later. So before any shortlist for MDS in UK after BDS in India, we ask one question: do you plan to hold a GDC number?

For 2027/28, overseas fees in this 12-course table start at GBP 31,515 (INR 40.01 lakh) for the University of Glasgow’s 12-month Oral Sciences MSc. The highest is GBP 70,100 (INR 88.98 lakh) a year, the 2026/27 rate for the three-year King’s College London Periodontology MClinDent, so course length matters too.

All INR conversions use the live Google-published rate captured on 2026-10-12: £1 ≈ ₹126.94. Rates fluctuate intraday; figures are indicative.

The non-clinical courses take a UK 2:2, and QMUL counts 50% to 60% in an Indian BDS as a 2:2, so graduates from recognised colleges usually clear it.

  • Closed until you’re registered: UCL’s Implant Dentistry MSc and QMUL’s Endodontic Practice MSc both need full GDC registration before you enrol, and QMUL’s also needs UK residence.
  • No specialist status: no programme here, King’s College London included, puts you on the GDC specialist list (the register of recognised UK specialists) or gives a National Training Number (an NHS specialty training post).
  • Not an MDS in India: in the schedule the Dental Council of India publishes, no UK MSc or MClinDent granted after 1993 is listed as equivalent to MDS. King’s MClinDent in Prosthodontics is listed as “an additional qualification but not equivalent to MDS”.

If you want to practise here, pick the exam first and the degree second.

Year-one budget for a UK dental master’s from India

Take a Hyderabad family whose daughter wants to study in the UK on a one-year MSc: QMUL Oral Biology in London or Glasgow Oral Sciences. Parents: base the loan on the year-one total below, not on tuition alone.

Cost itemLondon (QMUL Oral Biology)Outside London (Glasgow Oral Sciences)
Tuition, one yearGBP 33,150 (INR 42.08 lakh)GBP 31,515 (INR 40.01 lakh)
Student visa fee, charged in IndiaGBP 558 (INR 0.74 lakh)GBP 558 (INR 0.74 lakh)
Immigration Health Surcharge, 17-month visaGBP 1,164 (INR 1.48 lakh)GBP 1,164 (INR 1.48 lakh)
Living money to show, 9 months, from 30 Nov 2026GBP 14,130 (INR 17.94 lakh)GBP 10,827 (INR 13.74 lakh)
Year-one totalGBP 49,002 (INR 62.24 lakh)GBP 44,064 (INR 55.97 lakh)

The health surcharge covers your whole visa, which runs about 17 months for a one-year course: GBP 1,164. Living money follows the living-money rates from 30 November 2026, and the Student visa fee is the INR 74,060 charged in India on 12 October 2026. Our proof of funds checklist shows how to hold that money.

Most of the saving outside London comes from living money, not tuition. That line is the visa minimum, not a full year’s spend; real monthly costs by city sit in the UK cost of living breakdown.

Glasgow also cuts fees for Indian students: for 2027/28, its World Changers India Excellence Award offers up to 12 awards of GBP 12,500 off a one-year taught master’s. More awards sit in the UK scholarships list for Indian students.

GDC registration for Indian dentists: ORE, LDS and the Lancashire BDSi

The ORE and the LDS are the two recognised exams that lead to General Dental Council registration for a dentist trained in India. For 2026/27, the ORE costs GBP 7,567 (INR 9.61 lakh) in fees if each part is passed first time; every resit is paid again, and a failed part can cost months waiting for a seat.

RouteTotal feesWhere you sit itClinical hours neededAttempts or entry test

Assessment time and English rules

Allow 60 working days for the GDC to assess a complete ORE application. For English, three rules catch Indian applicants:

  • The Occupational English Test (OET) is not on the list in the GDC English language controls; IELTS is.
  • An English-taught BDS replaces IELTS only if it was awarded within the last two years and at least 75% of your patient contact was in English. A structured reference (a reference form from your dental school) must confirm it.
  • India isn’t on the Student visa list of English-speaking countries, so your visa needs English proof too.

ORE fees and the seat shortage

On 6 May 2026, ORE Part 2 rose from GBP 4,235 to GBP 6,967. The next ORE Part 1 sittings are 2-3 February and 6-7 April 2027. This year, places have gone within 30 minutes of a booking window opening. Have documents ready for the day an ORE booking window opens.

In 2025, average ORE Part 1 pass rates were 73% in April and 75% in August. Don’t book Part 1 before you’re ready: Part 2 must be passed within five years of your first Part 1.

The LDS route

Book and pay for LDS Part 1 (GBP 1,025) first, then email your eligibility documents to the Royal College of Surgeons of England within one week, or you lose the place and the fee. You’ll need a UK ENIC letter rating your BDS (the college still calls it NARIC) and proof your BDS covered what the GDC expects a new UK dentist to know. Places are limited, and booking can close early once full.

Part 2 (GBP 1,793) adds proof of your 1,600 hours, IELTS Academic or TOEFL, and a good-standing letter from the dental authority where you last worked, and where you qualified if different. Part 2 (London) and Part 3, a manikin test (GBP 1,736), are in person, so plan two trips. Sit Parts 2 and 3 within five years of passing Part 1.

The Lancashire BDSi

The Lancashire BDS International Route joins the UK BDS after Year 3, from March 2027. The GDC has approved it, so you finish registered, with no exam queue. It wants IELTS 7.0 in every part. It’s by far the most expensive route: pick it only if you’d rather pay than wait for exam seats.

Practice rights after a UK master’s: Graduate visa and temporary registration

If your course starts in 2027, you’ll apply for the Graduate visa (the Graduate Route) after 1 January 2027, so you’ll get 18 months, or 3 years after a doctorate.

Budget GBP 937 for the Graduate visa, plus a healthcare surcharge of GBP 1,035 a year. Under the surcharge rules for visas over a year, that comes to GBP 1,552.50 for 18 months. Job rules on that visa sit in post-study work visa in UK.

Without full registration, you can treat patients only under temporary registration, and it is narrow:

  • It covers only supervised training, teaching or research posts in NHS hospitals, dental schools and approved institutions, never general or private practice.
  • It runs 180 to 365 days at a time, up to five years, and never becomes full registration.

So start your exam plan during the master’s, not after it. A Graduate visa lets you stay in Britain, but without registration you still can’t treat patients.

For scale only: from 1 April 2026, dental foundation training, the NHS training year that follows dental qualification, pays GBP 43,893 a year in England.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. UK universities award taught degrees instead: the MSc, the MClinDent (Master of Clinical Dentistry) and the DClinDent (Doctor of Clinical Dentistry). They last from 12 months to three years, and most clinical ones want two years of practice after your BDS.

No. UK courses look at your BDS marks, clinical experience and English score. The non-clinical courses also set a lower English bar than the GDC: Leeds Dental Public Health and Glasgow Oral Sciences ask for IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each part.

Not on the degree alone. You need full GDC registration from the ORE, the LDS or an approved UK BDS route such as Lancashire’s. There’s no time limit on applying to the register after passing the ORE, so you can finish a master’s first.

Only part of the LDS. LDS Part 1 is online, with an examiner watching remotely, so you can sit it at home in India. ORE Part 1 runs only at three London venues, and ORE Part 2 is held at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London.

Six to 12 months on the ORE if you pass each part first time, and several years if you can’t get a place. While you wait, you can no longer apply to register as a dental therapist or hygienist if you hold only an overseas dental degree.
