The cost of living in UK for Indian students is about GBP 1,100 to 1,770 a month on current university estimates. The low end is Glasgow’s lowest August 2026 estimate; the top is the King’s College London 2026/27 average. Bristol postgraduates averaged more in 2025/26, at GBP 1,862 a month. The visa asks you to show only nine months of living money. Its monthly rate goes up for applications made from 30 November 2026. Outside London, most 2026/27 university budgets fall between GBP 1,387 (INR 1.76 lakh) a month at Leeds and GBP 1,684 (INR 2.14 lakh) for a Birmingham postgraduate in halls. Glasgow’s own estimate runs from GBP 1,100 to 1,700 a month, depending on your room and lifestyle. Choose your room as carefully as your city.

Manchester’s figure covers only a 41-week undergraduate year, so add summer rent if you stay on. If you haven’t chosen a university yet, our study in UK guide compares the options.

Bristol is the outlier. Its postgraduates’ average spend in 2025/26 was above the King’s College London budget, so a Bristol master’s student should budget as if for London. If rent is the cost you most need to cut, compare the cheapest cities in the UK for students before you accept an offer. Look at Belfast too. Student living costs in Northern Ireland are the UK’s lowest, GBP 165 a month below the UK average, in a 2025 survey quoted by Queen’s University Belfast.

A Typical Student Month in UK: Rent, Food, Bills and Travel

Cardiff University’s 2026/27 calculator puts a month in a four-bedroom shared house at GBP 1,125.91 before travel, and GBP 500 of that monthly total is rent, at May 2026 prices. That’s less than the city’s halls budget in the table above:

If your rent doesn’t include bills, Leeds puts them at about GBP 17 a week.

Add travel on top. King’s College London budgets GBP 173 a month for travel in London’s fare zones 1 to 4. In London, the 18+ Student Oyster photocard costs GBP 22 and takes 30% off weekly and longer Travelcards and bus passes; apply only after you enrol. Edinburgh budgets GBP 58 a month for local buses if you’re 22 or over. Under 22 and living in Scotland? The Young Persons’ (Under 22s) Free Bus Travel Scheme makes buses free once you have your own National Entitlement Card, the card you apply for to travel free. The 16-25 Railcard costs GBP 35 a year if you’re 16 to 25, or over 25 and studying full-time, with proof. It takes a third off most train fares.

Food is the main cost you can change week to week. Manchester’s student budget allows GBP 250 a month for groceries. King’s allows GBP 167, so plan to cook and to shop at budget supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi. Tuition isn’t in any figure here; our cost of studying in UK guide prices tuition by course.

  • Council Tax: this is the local council’s charge on a home. A home where everyone is a full-time student pays no Council Tax. Full-time means a course of at least one year and 21 hours of study a week.
  • The exemption follows your course dates, not your lease. If your tenancy starts in July and you enrol in late September, you’ll be billed for the months before you enrol.

Visa Maintenance Funds vs What a UK Year Really Costs

From 30 November 2026, the visa's living-money (maintenance) rate rises to GBP 1,203 (INR 1.53 lakh) a month outside London and GBP 1,570 (INR 1.99 lakh) in London. A September 2026 Home Office rule change sets the new rates. Apply by 29 November 2026 for the old, lower rates. The visa checks only nine months; a real year costs more.

Which rate you show

If you apply on or before 29 November 2026, you show the old student visa maintenance rates: GBP 1,171 a month outside London or GBP 1,529 in London. Which one applies depends on where your course is. You also show any tuition still unpaid for one academic year. Nine months is about 39 weeks. A Manchester hall contract runs 41 to 51 weeks, and a private house is usually rented all year.

One-off costs before landing

Families we brief in Hyderabad most often miss these:

  1. Visa fee: GBP 558 since 8 April 2026. In India it was charged as INR 73,842 on 12 October 2026, and the rupee price changes every week.
  2. Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): the fee for using the NHS, paid with your visa. It’s GBP 776 for each year of visa. A 12-month master’s gets a visa of about 17 months: a month before the course and four after. You pay for a year and a half: GBP 1,164.
  3. Deposit: up to five weeks’ rent on a privately rented home in England.
  4. First-fortnight setup (bedding, kitchen kit, a winter coat), money to live on until your UK bank account opens, some emergency savings for unexpected costs, and flights.

For a 12-month master’s in Edinburgh: GBP 18,504 living + GBP 558 visa + GBP 1,164 health surcharge = GBP 20,226 for the first year, before tuition and flights.

The money must sit in your account for 28 days in a row, and the last of those days must fall within 31 days of your visa application. In our September 2026 visa briefings, the most common problem was a family top-up that landed on day 22 of the 28-day window. The full amount had been there only a week, so the count started again.

Student Accommodation Costs in UK: Halls, Student Blocks and Private Rent

Halls, the university’s own student rooms, are the safer first-year booking. Bills usually sit inside the rent, and the contract ends on a known date. What a university room costs:

  • Sheffield, 2026/27: GBP 151.41 a week for a room with a shared bathroom on a 42-week contract, and GBP 240.38 for a studio on 51 weeks. Bills, contents insurance and internet are included.
  • Newcastle, Newgate Court: GBP 205.25 a week for a room with its own bathroom on a fixed 40-week contract, bills included.
  • Manchester: GBP 487 to 1,060 a month in university halls where you cook for yourself (master’s studios up to GBP 1,255), and GBP 860 to 1,010 in private halls.

Watch the contract length. A 42-week Sheffield hall ends on 11 July 2027. If you stay for a summer job or to retake exams, you’ll pay rent elsewhere for the rest of the summer. The rules depend on what you rent:

  • Halls, and private student blocks that sign up to an approved student housing code (the Unipol and ANUK codes): in England these usually keep fixed contracts. If a block hasn’t signed up, the private-flat rules below apply to it instead. Ask the block whether it has signed up before you sign your contract. Some halls still ask for rent in advance and a guarantor, someone who agrees to pay your rent if you don’t.
  • Private flats in England, since 1 May 2026: your tenancy has no fixed end date, and you can leave by giving two months’ notice. A landlord can ask for no more than one month’s rent in advance, and only after you sign.

From our counselling desk: the mistake we fix most often is a family budget that stops at the visa's nine-month total. It leaves out months ten to twelve, the deposit and summer rent. Once you know your city, choose the contract length, then the room. Your rent sets how much is left for everything else.
