Cheapest UK Universities for a Master’s: 2026/27 Fees and Visa Minimum

Outside London, a one-year master’s at the affordable universities in UK for Indian students costs GBP 11,800 to GBP 19,000 (INR 15.0-24.1 lakh) in 2026/27 tuition. It runs from the York St John International Business MSc to the top of Sunderland’s fee range. Add living money, the health fee and visa fee: roughly INR 31-40 lakh before you fly.

  • Visa minimum before you fly adds four things. The first is the fee. The second is nine months of living money: GBP 1,203 a month, or GBP 1,570 for London Met. The third is the NHS health fee (Immigration Health Surcharge): GBP 776 a year, so GBP 1,164 for a one-year master’s visa, which runs for more than 12 months. The last is the INR 74,060 visa fee. Where a fee is a range, we used the cheaper end. Leeds Trinity’s and Edge Hill’s totals use their GBP 15,000 standard fees.
  • September 2027 fees are already out for York St John (GBP 12,000, International Business MSc), Staffordshire (GBP 17,700), Sunderland (GBP 19,000) and London Met. Every other row is the 2026/27 rate, and Wrexham has published no 2027/28 fee, so keep a margin for 2027 entry.

Check your marks first. The five cheapest rows ask Indian graduates for:

University (India entry page)Bachelor’s result needed for a master’s
York St John University50% or a second class degree; apply only through its approved partner
Wrexham University60%; 55% with a four-year business degree, for business courses
Leeds Trinity University55%
Edge Hill University55% minimum (a 2:2); 60% is a 2:1
University of Chester55% to 65%, by course and academic history

Leeds Trinity has temporarily paused new applications, for intakes from September 2026 onwards, from students who live in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir or Haryana, or who completed their studies at institutions there.

London Met’s row shows its full GBP 20,000 fee because its GBP 5,000 South Asia award is published only up to May 2027 entry. Visa money for London is also GBP 1,570 a month, not GBP 1,203, so its total is the highest here. For costs beyond tuition, see our guide to the cost of studying in the UK.

Low-Cost UK Universities for an Undergraduate Degree, with TEF Ratings

For a three-year bachelor’s, a fixed fee matters as much as a low one. Wrexham University has both: GBP 11,750 a year (INR 14.9 lakh) for 2026/27, the lowest in this list, in the Wrexham University international fee table. Because the fee doesn’t change, you won’t pay more in years two and three.

Every English university here is government-approved, listed on the Office for Students (OfS) Register. The TEF is the government’s teaching grade for bachelor’s degrees in England: Gold is best, then Silver, then Bronze.

The trade-off is reputation: none is in the Russell Group of research-led universities, and some large employers screen CVs by university name, so if they’re your target, the cheaper fee can cost you later.

Year-One Budget at an Affordable UK University in Rupees

For visa applications from 30 November 2026, the Home Office requires GBP 1,203 a month to live outside London, or GBP 1,570 in London (INR 1.5 and 2.0 lakh). Under the new visa money rule, the visa counts up to nine months of this money. You need it on top of tuition, so it's the least you must have.

You pay the visa fee in rupees: INR 74,060 on 12 October 2026, the official India price, which changes weekly. Our guide to UK student visa proof of funds covers whose account counts.

The visa counts nine months of living money, but a one-year master’s runs for twelve. Wrexham University’s living cost estimate is GBP 520 to 740 a month for a university room with bills included, GBP 150 to 250 for food and GBP 50 to 100 for personal spending. Those three add up to GBP 720 to 1,090 a month, or GBP 8,640 to 13,080 over 12 months. Average private rents in August 2026 in these university towns, from the Office for National Statistics:

  • Cumberland (Cumbria’s Carlisle campus): GBP 681 a month
  • Middlesbrough (Teesside): GBP 698 a month
  • Sunderland: GBP 707 a month
  • Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire): GBP 715 a month
  • Wrexham: GBP 770 a month

Among the students we helped for 2026 entry, the families who kept year one closest to the visa minimum picked one of the lowest fees in the table and a low-rent town. They didn’t count on a scholarship not yet won. Compare towns in our list of the cheapest cities in the UK for students.

Scholarships and Fee Discounts at Low-Fee UK Universities

Count only discounts that need no application. Listed from most to least likely to reach you:

  1. Automatic awards. The Leeds Trinity scholarship (GBP 3,100), Edge Hill’s Global Vice-Chancellor’s Award (GBP 3,000) and Suffolk’s International Merit Scholarship (GBP 1,000-3,000) need no form. Leeds Trinity’s comes off the first year of 13 named GBP 15,000 courses, not its four GBP 12,000 MA courses.
  2. Sunderland, by entry year. For 2026/27 entry, Indian applicants who pay a deposit by its deadlines are eligible for the Global Leaders Scholarship (only East Asia, the Gulf states and Europe are excluded), but it is not guaranteed. For 2027/28, the Sunderland scholarship table takes GBP 5,500 off the GBP 19,000 fee for full-time taught postgraduate courses (nursing excluded), leaving GBP 13,500, and only GBP 1,000 off the MBA. It needs no application but covers “eligible countries” (no list), subject to availability, so plan on the full fee.
  3. On grades. The Greater Manchester International Merit Package gives up to GBP 3,000 off year one for 2026/27 entry (Gold: GBP 3,000 for a first class or 70%). It is applied at enrolment and subject to verification.
  4. Only up to May 2027 entry. London Met’s South Asia Bright Future Scholarship takes GBP 5,000 off for Indian citizens who pay a deposit of GBP 4,000 or more by its deadlines. It is one package, can’t be combined with other awards, and covers 2026/27 entry only (September 2026, January 2027 and May 2027).

More awards: scholarships to study in the UK for Indian students.

From our counselling desk: Among our 2026 students, visa money tripped up more Indian applicants than tuition did. The money landed too late for the 28-day hold, or sat in a parent's name without a consent letter and proof of relationship. The GOV.UK Student visa money rules need it in the account for at least 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before you apply. Move the funds two months before the visa date.

Before you apply, an Ardent Overseas counsellor checks three things: the fee page for your exact course, the timing of your visa money, and the CAS deposit your university asks for. These universities are real options, but the fee is only about half of what you must show for the visa. Talk to us at our Hyderabad or Tirupati office.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The lowest tuition fee in this list, Wrexham’s GBP 11,750 bachelor’s fee (INR 14.9 lakh), is already above INR 10 lakh before you add living costs, the health fee or the visa fee. The visa minimum before you fly starts near INR 31 lakh for a one-year master’s.

Some UK universities accept English proof other than IELTS, but the rule is set per course, not per university, so two courses at the same campus can differ. Confirm the exact English requirement for your course before you pay a deposit. The routes are set out in studying in the UK without IELTS.

The deposit you pay to get your visa letter (the CAS) varies by university. Teesside asks GBP 4,000 (INR 5.1 lakh), Edge Hill asks at least GBP 4,000, Derby asks GBP 8,000 (INR 10.2 lakh), and Cumbria asks up to 50% of the programme fee. For the visa letter itself, read CAS full form in the UK.

The Graduate Route (the post-study work visa) gives 18 months to anyone applying from 1 January 2027, including all 2027 starters. Students can work 20 hours a week in term time on a full-time degree, if your university is one the Home Office trusts to sponsor students (most are). See post-study work visa in the UK.

For a self-funded place, aim to hold an offer by spring 2027. That leaves time to pay the deposit, get the CAS and keep the visa money in the account for at least 28 days in a row before a summer visa application. Our September intake in the UK guide has the month-by-month plan.
