What does CAS stand for in the UK?
CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the sponsorship record a licensed UK education provider creates before a Student route visa application is filed. As of 2026, the University of Cambridge sets the term out in full on its CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) page. Only the provider can create one, so it sits behind an accepted offer.
Most people searching the CAS full form in UK still land on a page calling it a “CAS letter”. The Home Office’s Student sponsor guidance: Sponsorship duties, version 04/2026, is blunt: a CAS is not a paper certificate or document but a virtual document, like a database record. It also tells universities to send the number securely and directly to you, because someone else could try to use it.
The CAS number itself is short. Your sponsor assigns it and must pass the unique reference number to you to use when you apply. As of 2026, University College London describes it to applicants as a unique 14-digit reference given to you by UCL as your sponsor. No GOV.UK page publishes a format, so copy what your sponsor sends you, character for character.
- Not a letter, even though the CAS statement is laid out like one.
- Not an offer letter. A CAS is the sponsor’s official electronic confirmation of your unconditional place, not the offer letter itself.
- Not a visa, and not a promise that one will follow.
Who issues your CAS, and who does not?
Your licensed education provider issues your CAS, acting as your student sponsor. As of 22 July 2026, UKVI maintains a Register of licensed sponsors: students, listing every institution licensed to sponsor students under the Student and Child Student routes. An institution absent from that register cannot assign a CAS to anybody.

One timing trap. Under the Immigration Rules in force in 2026, Appendix Student rule ST 7.1 requires a CAS issued by a sponsor whose licence is still valid on the date the application is decided. Not the date it was assigned, and not the day you paid the fee. If a sponsor’s licence is revoked while your file waits in the queue, the CAS behind it stops working.
- UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) decides your visa. It never creates the CAS.
- UCAS routes undergraduate applications and has no sponsorship role.
- The British Council runs tests and scholarship schemes, not Student route sponsorship.

Your CAS statement holds your identity, course, fee and sponsor details in a single record. As of 2026, the University of Westminster's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) page lists the CAS number, course dates, sponsor licence number, primary site of study, fees already paid and passport name among them. UKVI may compare those entries against your visa form.

Your identity fields, and why they must match your passport exactly
Your family name and given names must match the corresponding passport fields exactly. The CAS records them in separate fields, so the displayed order may differ from your passport’s printed order. What matters is that each field holds the right name. In the CAS checks we ran for the 2026-27 intake, this is the field we correct most often, usually an initial that a Standard XII certificate spells out in full.
The course fields: title, level and site of study
Rule ST 7.4 of Appendix Student ties together the course, the approved qualification, the level of study and the place of study. Watch the site of study if your programme is London-branded but taught elsewhere. The English confirmation field records how you met the requirement, including the waiver routes set out under studying in the UK without IELTS.
Which CAS money and sponsor fields change your bank evidence?
The fees-paid figure on your CAS reduces the money you must evidence in the bank. For the 2026-27 intake, GOV.UK's Student visa: Money you need guidance states the course fees you still owe will be on your CAS, and that funds must be held for at least 28 days in a row. Paying early lowers that balance.
The money fields: tuition, fees already paid, and what that does to your bank balance
Payments on the CAS, or evidenced by a sponsor receipt if you pay later, reduce the fees you must show. Maintenance sits on top, at £1,171 to £1,529 per month for up to nine months, outside the fee calculation entirely.
The sponsor fields nobody checks: licence number and registered address
Your CAS carries your sponsor’s licence number and registered address. The public register will not help you verify them, because it does not publish licence numbers or addresses. It confirms only that the institution is listed, its status, and the route it may sponsor. If the licence details look wrong, raise them with the institution directly.
Two six-month clocks, and only one of them is yours to control
Two separate six-month limits govern a Student route application, and they do not start on the same day. Under the Immigration Rules in force in 2026, Immigration Rules Appendix Student rule ST 1.2(d) requires a CAS reference number issued no more than 6 months before the date of application. Breach it and the application fails at the door.
Miss either limit and the CAS full form in UK becomes academic: you file late, or you file on a dead reference.

Clock one: six months forward from the day your CAS is assigned
The sponsor guidance is explicit: the CAS is valid for six months from the date you assign it. That “you” means your sponsor. The clock starts on the assignment date, not the day the email reaches you.
Clock two: six months back from your course start date
As of July 2026, GOV.UK’s Student visa guidance sets the other boundary for applications made from outside the UK: the earliest you can apply is 6 months before you start your course. That same page prices the application at £558 (approx. ₹71,984). This clock counts backwards, so it is fixed long before a CAS exists.
Applying from inside the UK does not change clock one: the CAS must still have been assigned within six months. Only the filing rule changes. GOV.UK’s Student visa: Extend your visa guidance puts the earliest application at 3 months before the course starts, and your new course must normally begin within 28 days of your current permission expiring.
Where the windows overlap, and the ATAS clock that can shorten both
Your real filing window is the overlap. A third clock can squeeze it. As of 2026, GOV.UK’s Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) guidance states an ATAS certificate is valid for 6 months from its date of issue for a visa application, and there is no fee to apply.
Apply early: the wait is long and cannot be bought down. The same guidance says ATAS applications take at least 30 working days, complex ones longer, and there is no fast-track service. It also warns against using a Gmail address, because of an ongoing technical issue.
Decisions outside the UK usually land within 3 weeks in 2026 (Student visa: Apply).
What your sponsor needs before it will issue one
Pre-CAS tuition deposits run from £2,500 to £5,000 across the three universities below, though requirements and exemptions vary. For 2026-27, the University of Essex issues a CAS only once you hold an unconditional, accepted place and have paid any required deposit (Student route: Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)). The deposit is a cash gate.
Parents, real money leaves the account here, before any visa exists. There is no government CAS fee: the figures below are tuition deposits set under each university’s own policy, so one institution’s number tells you nothing about another. Three published for 2026-27:

One Bradford exception matters directly here. For the 2026-27 cycle, applicants to its MSc International Business Management programme from Punjab and Haryana must pay the full tuition fee in advance, not the £5,000 deposit. If that is your programme and your state, budget for the whole fee before a CAS exists.

As of July 2026, GOV.UK’s Pay for UK healthcare as part of your immigration application: How much you have to pay puts the immigration health surcharge at £776 per year for students, calculated on the length of the visa and paid during the application. A Student visa can run longer than the course. Add both and you commit lakhs before a caseworker opens the file. For anyone required to prove funds, a correct CAS will not stop a refusal if the balance drops below the required amount during the 28-day period. Why has your CAS not arrived yet?
Universities open a CAS window, and it opens later than most applicants expect. For the 2026-27 cycle, Imperial College London's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) page states the earliest a CAS is produced is 5 months prior to your course start date. Chasing it before then changes nothing.
The question we field most in July is why a September-start CAS has not appeared. Usually it is the window. Loughborough University sets a similar gate for 2026-27. It prepares a CAS once you have met your offer conditions, accepted firmly, and your start date is less than six months away. Its Applying for your CAS and student visa page then promises the CAS by email up to five working days after the deposit arrives.
There is no standard UK-wide CAS processing time, and published figures differ by institution. SOAS says CAS requests usually take five business days, and up to 10 business days during busier periods or when a form arrives incomplete. Plan against your sponsor’s published window, not a national range. How many intakes there are in the UK shows how the windows fall.
Silence usually means a pre-CAS check is running. For 2026-27:
- University of Essex requires a questionnaire and financial check, with a recorded credibility interview where required.
- University of Bradford carries out financial and credibility checks, and currently describes its pre-CAS applicant support interview as mandatory.
- University of Strathclyde lists academic qualifications, English qualifications, a valid passport, a deposit and academic progression.
- The University of Law cannot issue a CAS until it completes all the checks the Home Office requires, including a compliance interview where required.
Which CAS errors get visas refused?
CAS errors are cheapest to fix before the record is issued. As of 2026, Queen Mary University of London's CAS and Visa page warns it may not be able to change or update the details in your CAS once it has been issued. Some errors need sponsor action before you submit.
“Check your CAS carefully” is the standard advice, and it points at the wrong document. Once a statement is issued your options narrow: minor errors may sometimes be corrected with a sponsor note, while significant ones may require the CAS to be cancelled and reassigned, which restarts clock one. Either way, contact your sponsor before you apply. Mistakes are cheap before issue and expensive after.
- Family name or given names not matching the corresponding passport fields: may require clarification, or refusal if your identity cannot be tied to the record.
- An old passport number: may delay the application while the two records are reconciled.
- Course title or level not the one you accepted: may lead to refusal if the level of study requirement is not met.
- Wrong primary site of study: may lead to refusal if the place of study requirement is not met.
- Fees-paid figure understated: may leave you evidencing money you have already spent.
- ATAS field blank on a regulated course: may lead to refusal if no valid certificate is held.
From our counselling desk: get any correction confirmed in writing before you file, and never accept "we will fix it later". Running a CAS correction and a visa application in parallel is how families lose an intake: the six-month clock does not pause while a sponsor investigates, and an application already submitted against a wrong record cannot be quietly amended. Do not decide for yourself which errors are small enough to leave.
Can you use the same CAS twice?
A CAS cannot be reused after a granted or refused application. Under the April 2026 sponsor guidance, the Home Office's Student sponsor guidance: Sponsorship duties states a CAS can only be used to support one application, whether or not that application is successful. It may be reused after an invalid, void or withdrawn application, if it stays assigned and valid.
The same guidance carves out an exception almost nobody publishes. If the student’s application is rejected as invalid or withdrawn by the student, the CAS still shows as “assigned”, which means it can be used again to support a further application.
Reuse turns on what happened to your application, not how badly it went. Appendix Student rule ST 7.2 says the CAS must not have been used in a previous application which was either granted or refused. An application rejected as invalid, made void or withdrawn leaves the CAS usable, provided it remains assigned, unexpired and otherwise valid. “Refused” and “rejected as invalid” sound alike but behave in opposite ways.

A refused application in 2026 means a new CAS before you can reapply (Royal College of Art, CAS number FAQs). An invalid, void or withdrawn application is the opposite: it may leave the CAS reusable if it stays assigned and valid. Ask for it the same week: clock two did not pause.

Can I apply for a UK student visa with my offer letter instead of a CAS?

Can I hold a CAS from two universities at the same time?
Two universities can each assign you a CAS, but only one can be used in an application. UKCISA is clear that once your visa is granted and you enter the UK on it, you must study at the institution that issued that CAS. Changing institution normally means a new CAS and a fresh visa application before the new course starts.
Does getting a CAS mean my student visa is guaranteed?
No. A CAS confirms sponsorship and records your course, qualification and fee details, but it does not guarantee the visa. UKVI still tests your funds, your documents and your credibility. An application can still be refused if you must prove funds and do not meet the 28-day requirement.
My CAS has a spelling mistake in my name. What should I do?
Contact the sponsor and do not apply until it confirms the correction in writing. A minor typing error may be fixed with a sponsor note. A material identity error may need the CAS cancelled and reassigned, restarting the six-month clock from the new date.
How long does a UK university take to issue a CAS?
No UK-wide figure exists. Loughborough publishes up to five working days after the deposit is received. SOAS says requests usually take five business days, and up to 10 during busier periods. CAS processing times and opening windows vary by sponsor, so plan in weeks, not days.
