So yes, you can do an MBA in UK without GMAT, and your work experience decides which school fits. The lowest fee is at the University of Chester MBA: GBP 15,700 for one year in 2026/27. Conditional means some applicants still sit a test:

  • Middlesex: GMAT 550 without an honours degree (a UK bachelor’s awarded with a class) or a professional qualification.
  • Edinburgh and Leeds: 555 on the GMAT Focus Edition (the current GMAT format) if your degree is below a 2:1.
  • Strathclyde: may test your verbal and number skills.

UK business schools that require GMAT or GRE, and their waiver routes

Six UK business schools still require a test for a full-time MBA: Warwick, Imperial, Cambridge, London Business School (LBS), Alliance Manchester and Cranfield. For 2027 entry, Imperial College Business School offers a small number of GMAT waivers each cycle. At these six, you need a score unless you win a waiver.

Warwick or Imperial appears on nearly every MBA shortlist that reaches our Hyderabad desk, so check each school’s test rule:

  • Warwick: the Warwick full-time MBA needs the GMAT, the GRE or the Warwick Test, its own aptitude test, which is offered only to certain candidates after interview.
  • Imperial: the GMAT, the GRE or the Executive Assessment (a shorter test from the GMAT family), with a waiver route below.
  • Cambridge: the Cambridge full-time MBA needs a GMAT, GMAT Focus Edition or GRE score, with no waiver.
  • LBS: a valid GMAT or GRE score before you submit.
  • Alliance Manchester: its own Manchester Admissions Test, the GMAT or the GRE. Alliance Manchester Business School lets strong applicants from a “less-represented nationality” sit its own test instead, so ask its recruitment team first.
  • Cranfield: the Cranfield Admission Test is taken online after you apply. Cranfield reviews the exam rule only in exceptional cases.

Imperial runs the clearest published waiver process:

  1. Check you qualify. Holders of CFA Level 2 or Level 3 (the Chartered Financial Analyst exams) qualify automatically; everyone else needs top grades and strong maths.
  2. Send the waiver form before your MBA application, with your transcripts and an up-to-date CV.
  3. Expect a decision within seven working days.
  4. Time it against the 2027 rounds: 22 September 2026 has passed, leaving 12 January, 16 March and 11 May 2027.

A declined Imperial GMAT waiver request is never reconsidered, so one weak request closes the route for the whole cycle. Send it only if you hold a CFA pass or strong maths grades. Otherwise book the GMAT now.

What replaces the GMAT in a no-GMAT MBA application

Match your evidence to each school’s wording rather than sending one CV everywhere. Picture an Indian IT engineer with three years in the job who ran a four-person module through two release cycles. At Edinburgh, that counts as managerial experience, because it means any project or task where you guided people or resources towards a goal. At Exeter, it may not, because Exeter means managing people or substantive projects. Under two years at work? A specialist master’s at one of the top UK universities for a master’s may suit you better.

Without a score, admissions read four parts of an Indian applicant’s file more closely:

  • Your degree class. Most other schools judge your Indian marks against a 2:1 or 2:2 themselves, so get that confirmed in writing before you pay any fee.
  • Your experience letter. It must show the years and the kind of work the school names.
  • Age and interview. Strathclyde sets a minimum age of 24 and a formal interview.
  • A condition after entry. Chester may ask a graduate with no experience to take on employment-related work early in the course.

The work experience letter did: who signed it, whether it named a team or a budget, and whether its dates matched the CV. We also watched applicants spend their single Imperial waiver request on a file a no-GMAT school would have read without any score.

Is an MBA in UK without GMAT worth it?

Yes, if you choose by experience and budget rather than by the missing test. An MBA in UK without GMAT is not an easier admission: with no score, schools judge you on your marks, so average marks show.

The real downside is your classmates. Westminster designs its MBA for recent graduates and early-career professionals, so most classmates at a no-experience school are at your stage. Bath’s full-time MBA class of 2025/26 averaged 6 years of work experience and an age of 30. That network is part of what a higher fee buys, and a cheaper, younger class gives you less of it.

Parents, the payback question has three parts:

  • Scholarships. Lancaster University offers Indian students a GBP 10,000 Postgraduate India Scholarship, plus scholarships of up to 50% of fees for September 2027. Other awards are on our page of UK scholarships for Indian students.
  • Salary to stay. To stay on a Skilled Worker visa after the course, your job must pay at least GBP 33,400 a year, or 70% of the usual pay for that job if that’s higher. This new-entrant rate, set by the Immigration Rules Appendix Skilled Worker, covers you if you’re under 26, or if you switch from your Student visa after a UK master’s. It also covers you if you hold a Graduate visa now, or held one that ended under 2 years ago. On this rate, your Graduate and Skilled Worker time together can’t pass 4 years. Otherwise it’s GBP 41,700 or the full usual pay, whichever is higher. The post-study work visa in the UK gives you time to find that job.

That salary bar is the same whether or not you sat a test, so plan your route to it before you pay a deposit.

Possibly, but the two rules are checked separately. For 2027 entry, Exeter’s One Planet MBA drops the GMAT yet asks for IELTS 7.0, and UEL asks for 6.0 with 6.0 in writing and speaking. Some universities accept other English evidence, so a test-free MBA can still need an English test.

No. Removing the test moves the decision onto your degree class, your experience letter and your essays. A score can even rescue weaker marks: the Cambridge MBA considers grades below a good 2:1 only with a good GMAT or GRE. Without a score, you lose that lever.

Usually, yes, if your marks clear the bar. For postgraduate entry, Coventry University asks Indian applicants for 60% in a three-year degree or 55% in a four-year one. Most MBA pages state a UK grade and leave the Indian equivalent to admissions, so send your transcript early and ask.

Yes, at the schools that want a test. For 2027 entry, Imperial asks at least 156 verbal and 158 quantitative, Warwick Business School treats 160 in each as competitive, and London Business School has no preference between the two. At the 23 no-GMAT universities, you need neither score.

It can be, but not automatically. Under the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2025 equivalence regulations, each course is checked on entry level and credits, so a one-year UK MBA is compared on credits, not length. Get the UGC equivalence certificate before relying on it for a job that needs a recognised degree.
