Finland Student Visa for Indian Students 2026: Permit, Funds, Fees and Steps

Finland Student Visa for Indian Students
Finland Student Visa for Indian Students

In 2026, the Finland student visa for Indian students is a residence permit for studies, which you need for any course longer than 90 days. Migri, Finland’s immigration office, wants €9,600 in your own bank account on the day you apply for a degree, plus your first-year tuition if it is still unpaid. Most families worry about whose name the money sits in. It has to be yours. The table below shows what each type of applicant needs, and what you’ll pay in rupees.

Key Takeaways

  • A first student permit costs €600 online if you are 18 or over, which VFS charges as ₹66,400.
  • You need €9,600 (about ₹10.23 lakh) in your own account when you apply for a degree course.
  • Unpaid first-year tuition must sit in the same account, on top of the €9,600.
  • A sponsor’s letter is not accepted. Parents can transfer money, but Migri may ask where it came from.
  • Ordinary travel insurance is refused. You need student cover of €120,000 (about ₹1.28 crore) for courses under two years.
  • Do this first: move the money into your own account, then book VFS the day you submit.
  • On 8 October 2026, Migri’s queue showed about 76% of approved first permits decided within 30 days.

Tuition typically runs €9,000 to €20,000 a year, and some programmes charge more or less. At those typical fees, a student who has not paid yet shows between €18,600 and €29,600 in total. The permit can be granted for your whole course, not one year at a time.

You can only apply once you have a seat. For autumn 2027 entry, the main joint application on Studyinfo runs 7 to 21 January 2027, so arrange the money while you wait for results. Our study in Finland guide covers admission, and the requirements to study in Finland page lists the marks universities ask for.

Proof of funds for a Finland student residence permit

€800 a month is the floor. In 2026, students need €800 per month (about ₹85,200) for rent, food and other needs, or €9,600 (about ₹10.23 lakh) for a course of a year or more. The money must already be there when you apply.

Three rules decide whether your money counts, and parents usually trip on the first one:

  • It must be in your own account, one that only you use. A parent’s account does not count, except as a joint account for students under 18.
  • A sponsor letter isn’t enough. Parents can transfer the money to you, and Migri may then ask where it came from, such as a tax certificate.
  • Tuition is separate. The living money cannot be used to pay the fee, so unpaid tuition sits on top.

Attach a bank statement covering the past six months, showing your name, the bank’s name and the currency. A big deposit days before you apply stands out on six months of history, so move the money early and keep the transfer record. For a first permit, future wages don’t count. There’s no education-loan route in Migri’s rules. A sanction letter alone shows nothing; the balance in your own account is what counts.

From our counselling desk: The question we hear most from Hyderabad families is whether a parent's fixed deposit or a loan sanction letter will do. On its own, neither does. In the Finland files we prepared this year, the clean ones were those where the money had moved into the student's account well before the form went in.

The €9,600 is a minimum, not a budget. Plan €900 to €1,200 a month for real living costs, and see our cost of studying in Finland page for a city split.

Health insurance and documents for your permit file

Regular travel insurance does not count. Migri’s student insurance rules reject policies that only cover trips of up to 90 days. The cover you need depends on course length:

  • Under two years: medical costs up to €120,000.
  • Two years or more: cover for medicines up to €40,000.
  • Either way, an excess (the share of each claim you pay yourself) of no more than €300, and cover that starts by the day you land.

A shorter course needs bigger insurance. Buy the policy before you submit, since the certificate goes into the file.

Migri also asks for:

  1. Your passport and a passport photo taken in the last six months.
  2. Your letter of acceptance from the Finnish university.
  3. The six-month bank statement and any grant decision.
  4. The insurance certificate.
  5. Proof of paid tuition, or the scholarship certificate.

Where Migri needs it, get papers translated and officially attested. University English proof is separate from the permit; our page on study in Finland without IELTS explains which Indian degrees count.

Finland student visa fees in rupees

€600 is the 2026 online fee for a first student permit, which VFS Global’s India fee table charges as ₹66,400. A paper application costs €750 (₹83,000), so applying online saves about ₹16,600 and is the better route for almost every student.

ChargeEURINR at VFSWho pays it
Student permit, online€600₹66,400Every applicant 18 or over
Student permit, paper€750₹83,000Only if you cannot apply online
Permit for under-18s, online€400₹44,300Applicants under 18
D visa, online€95₹10,500Optional
VFS service fee€20₹2,215Everyone who gives fingerprints at VFS

VFS sets these rupee amounts from the exchange rate, so they can move between now and your appointment. Count the €100 Studyinfo application fee too. It is paid at the admission stage, not with the permit. If you apply online and give fingerprints at VFS, the permit stage costs €620: the online fee plus the VFS service fee.

How to apply on Enter Finland, step by step

You apply online on Enter Finland, Migri’s portal, and make one visit in person:

  1. Accept your study place and get the acceptance letter.
  2. Fill in the form on Enter Finland, upload the attachments and pay the €600 by card. You can also pay at the visit.
  3. Add the D visa, a 100-day entry visa, only if you can fly within two weeks of the decision. It lets you travel before your permit card arrives, but it does not make Migri decide faster.
  4. Book and attend your identity check at VFS Global or a Finnish embassy within three months of submitting. You give fingerprints and show your original papers there.
  5. Wait for the decision. Your file only joins Migri’s queue after the identity check, so book that slot the same day you submit.

Students we’ve supported from Hyderabad often ask if they can skip the visit. They can’t: fingerprints are only taken in person.

Finland student visa processing time in 2026

As of 8 October 2026, the student queue shows that about 76 percent of first student permits that end in approval are decided within 30 days. The rest take longer, so a September start needs your complete file in by early summer.

In early October, the oldest files still waiting were from students who gave fingerprints on 9 June 2026. Migri says the most common reason for a delay is doubt about the applicant’s money.

Close these gaps before you submit, because Migri checks each one against your file:

  • less than €9,600, or the money in a parent’s account;
  • unpaid tuition missing from the account;
  • travel insurance instead of student cover;
  • missing attachments, such as the acceptance letter.

Work rights, permit length and staying on after graduation

Treat wages as help with rent, never as your permit money. The work limit itself is generous:

  • An average of 30 hours a week, or 1,560 hours a year, with full-time work allowed in holidays as long as the yearly average holds.
  • Required internships don’t count toward the limit, if it was agreed in advance that they earn credits.

Our guide to part-time jobs in Finland covers pay by sector.

After you graduate, you can apply for a permit to look for work or start a business for up to two years. You can split it into as many as three parts of at least six months, the last ending within three years of the first. Apply from Finland before your study permit ends and the online fee is €230, not €750. Our post-study work visa in Finland page explains how to use those two years.

Found a job? Apply for a work permit before the job-search permit ends. Married? Read the Finland spouse visa for students page before you file, because family rules may change in 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for the permit today. Migri checks your funds, study place and insurance, not a language test. Your university still sets its own English rule. A government proposal would add a language requirement to the study permit as part of changes planned for October 2027, but Parliament is still considering it.

Yes. Today your spouse and children can apply for their own family permits at the same time as you. A government proposal would make families wait until the student has spent one year in Finland, from 5 April 2027. If you are married, it is safer to file together before then.

There is a permanent residence path called degree completed in Finland. It covers a master’s degree, a bachelor’s from a university, a master’s from a university of applied sciences, or a doctorate. A bachelor’s from a university of applied sciences is not on that path, so plan the longer standard route.

Migri’s student queue page reports volumes, not an approval rate for Indian applicants. In 2025 it decided 11,833 first applications for a study permit from all countries. Your odds depend on your own file, mainly whether the money and insurance meet the rules on the day you apply.

A grant for living costs does. Migri’s own example: on a one-year course with a €2,000 living grant (about ₹2.13 lakh), you show €7,600 (about ₹8.10 lakh) instead of €9,600. A tuition waiver works differently. It removes the tuition from your account, but the living money stays the same.

Get the money into your own account early, buy student insurance, and book the identity visit the day you submit. Ardent Overseas counsellors in Hyderabad and Tirupati check each bank statement, insurance certificate and tuition proof against Migri’s list before you submit.
