For a humanities master’s, Sweden wins: Stockholm’s humanities fee converts to the lowest rupee figure in this table. Don’t treat EUR 20,000 as Finland’s ceiling either. Since 1 August 2026, Uniarts Helsinki charges EUR 28,000 a year, a fee it calls a full-cost tuition fee,, and no scholarship covers it. Entry Routes and English Proof in Finland and Sweden, by Level

Your Class 12 board and your degree decide whether you need an English test. Sweden takes CBSE or CISCE Class XII English grades at both levels, while the University of Helsinki takes an English-taught Indian degree for a master’s.

For a bachelor’s, your board decides the route:

If you’re a CBSE student choosing a bachelor’s, Sweden lets you skip the English test, while Helsinki makes you sit the SAT or ACT. The requirements to study in Sweden list every document you’ll need for that application.

For a master’s, your degree and your Class 12 board both count:

2027 Application Dates and the Money Each Permit Wants in Your Account

Sweden opens first and wants tuition paid before the permit, so a 2027 master’s plan runs in this order:

  1. 16 October 2026: the first round for Sweden’s autumn 2027 intake opens at universityadmissions.se, Sweden’s national application site.
  2. 7-21 January 2027: apply in Finland’s Studyinfo joint application, where one form covers up to six programmes.
  3. 15 January 2027: the University Admissions autumn deadline. Your application fee and documents are due by 1 February, and master’s results arrive on 1 April.
  4. Skip Sweden’s second round (15 March to 15 April 2027). You’re allowed to apply, but a student who needs a residence permit will most likely not get one in time.
  5. Move the money into your own account early: Finland wants a bank statement covering the past 6 months, and Sweden wants one issued no more than 4 months before your permit start date.
  6. Settle tuition: pay the Swedish fee before you apply for the permit. For Finland you can apply unpaid, but then the first-year fee must sit in your account on top of your living funds.
  7. Apply for the residence permit with Migri (the Finnish Immigration Service) or Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency).

Finland asks for 6 months of bank history, and doubt about finances is the most common reason Migri delays a decision, so move the money into your child’s name early. Sweden’s maintenance requirement (the minimum living money a permit needs) for 2027 isn’t out yet, so plan on the 2026 figure of SEK 10,656 a month and keep a margin. Working in Finland vs Sweden, During and After Your Degree

Finland lets students work an average of 30 hours a week across the year, and Migri’s income rules for students let some weeks go higher. Sweden caps term-time work at 15 hours for permits granted from 11 June 2026. Planned wages don’t count toward your first Finnish permit, so extra hours help with monthly spending, not the visa file.

You’ll feel Finland’s downside quickly: part-time jobs are hard to find without Finnish or Swedish, so don’t build your budget on them (Study in Finland).

Older advice saying Sweden has no weekly work limit is out of date for new permits. You can work longer in June, July and August, and for work that is part of your degree. Going over 15 hours in term can get your permit withdrawn or an extension refused. The rules from 11 June 2026 also mean you must pass 37.5 course credits in year one and 45 a year after that, or your permit may not be extended.

After graduation: two years to job-hunt vs one

  • Finland: a job-search permit for up to two years, taken in one go or split into up to three stretches of at least six months each. Apply from inside Finland before your student permit ends and it costs EUR 230 online as an extended permit; applying from abroad costs EUR 750.
  • Sweden: a permit to look for work for up to one year, for SEK 1,500 plus the same monthly maintenance money.
  • Finland permanent residence: a degree completed in Finland is one route to a permanent residence permit. A master’s from a university or a UAS (university of applied sciences, Finland’s work-focused institutions) qualifies, and so does a university bachelor’s, but you also need a continuous (A) permit and must meet Migri’s integration requirements.

A UAS bachelor’s does not qualify for that route, and that’s the trap to avoid when you pick an undergraduate route.
