Study in UK After 12th

You can study in UK after 12th through a direct UCAS bachelor’s if your Class 12 marks clear the university’s bar. For 2027 entry, that bar runs from 60% at Coventry University to 98% for state-board students on Nottingham’s most selective courses. Miss a direct bar, and an integrated foundation year opens from 60% at Leeds (65% from most state boards). On the Telangana or AP board? Some universities don’t list it, and many ask more of you than of CBSE students. Below are CBSE cut-offs at 11 universities, state-board cut-offs where published, and 2027 fees, funds and UCAS dates.

Key Takeaways

  • For the same offer, Queen Mary asks 85% from CBSE or ISC but 90% from most state boards.
  • Manchester’s direct entry excludes Telangana and AP boards.
  • CBSE Applied Maths is not accepted for maths-heavy courses at LSE (from 2027/28), or for Computer Science, Maths and Statistics at Warwick.
  • Among these universities, yearly fees run from GBP 20,800 (approx. INR 26.40 lakh) at Coventry to GBP 41,900 (approx. INR 53.19 lakh) at LSE.
  • Edinburgh medicine needs a UCAT score or a pre-agreed exemption; 2027-entry testing ended on 24 September 2026, so without one, plan for 2028 entry.
  • UCAS deadlines: 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine; 13 January 2027 for most courses.
  • Students starting in 2027 (graduating around 2030) get an 18-month Graduate visa.

Three routes open from 50% in Class 12. Northumbria University Pathway‘s Business and Law foundation is stand-alone (2026/27: GBP 11,750 to GBP 21,250, by IELTS score). Keele University International College‘s International Year One is your degree’s first year, and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) foundation is integrated.

Pick an integrated foundation year (one the university runs as part of your degree) if you can:

Class 12 Percentage Required for UK Universities: CBSE vs State Board

Board, not just marks, sets the Class 12 percentage required for UK universities. For 2027 entry, the same Queen Mary offer needs 85% from CBSE or ISC students but 90% from most other state boards. Telangana and AP families we counsel often find out after shortlisting that a university doesn’t accept their board.

In each range, the lower figure is for the less competitive courses. Edinburgh, Manchester, LSE and Warwick are Russell Group universities (a group of research-led UK universities), where the board list matters most.

If you plan to study in UK after 12th from a state board, check the board list before percentages. If your board isn’t on it, they won’t look at your marks. Your Standard XII English mark can replace IELTS at some universities; otherwise you need the IELTS score shown:

  • Leeds: 70% or 75%, depending on your board, or IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each part
  • Sheffield: 75% from CBSE or CISCE, or 80% from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the other listed state boards; otherwise at least IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each part
  • Nottingham: 70% to 85%, rising with the course’s IELTS level, from CBSE or CISCE only; state-board students need an English test
  • Coventry: 60% from listed boards, including Andhra Pradesh but not Telangana; otherwise IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each part
  • Queen Mary: 60%, 70% or 80% in CBSE or ISC English, by course (65%, 75% or 85% from Andhra Pradesh if Queen Mary can verify the marks; Telangana is not listed), within 7 years of your course start; otherwise IELTS 6.0 to 7.0
  • Edinburgh: 85% in CBSE or CISCE, for Medicine only

More waivers: studying in the UK without IELTS.

Best Courses to Study in UK After 12th by Stream

Two CBSE science students with identical marks can get opposite answers from Warwick Computer Science: the one with Standard Maths can apply, the one with Applied Maths can’t. That’s why the course, and the subject it demands, comes before the university.

  • PCM: engineering, computer science, maths, physics and economics; most need Standard Maths.
  • PCB: medicine, dentistry, biomedical science and pharmacy. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses can fill at most four of your five UCAS choices, so use the fifth as a backup such as biomedical science.
  • Commerce: business, accounting, finance and management. General business courses at Coventry set no subject requirement. For Economics, check the Maths requirement first.
  • Arts and humanities: law, psychology, English, history and media. Here the board matters most: Edinburgh’s humanities college takes CBSE and CISCE only.Design, art and architecture courses usually ask for a portfolio too.

Families we counsel who pick the university first often redo the shortlist when a subject requirement knocks a choice out. Pick the course first, then compare subject rankings, not the university’s overall ranking; our list of 10 top courses to study in UK shows where each leads.

Cost of Studying in UK After 12th: First-Year Budget

Across the eight courses below, international tuition for a 2027 start runs from GBP 20,800 a year at Coventry (2026/27 fee; 2027/28 not yet published) to GBP 41,900 for LSE BSc Economics (approx. INR 26.40 lakh to INR 53.19 lakh). That spread is the biggest cost to study in UK after 12th.

ManchesterComputer ScienceGBP 39,70050.40 lakh
LSEEconomicsGBP 41,90053.19 lakh

Leeds and LSE fix the fee for the whole degree: three years’ tuition is GBP 101,100 at Leeds and GBP 125,700 at LSE. Coventry’s GBP 62,400 for three years at its 2026/27 fee is a floor, because that fee can rise.

Add the minimum living money and a first year comes to about GBP 31,600 at Coventry and GBP 56,000 at LSE in London, before the visa costs below.

Parents: budget three visa costs too.

That money is a minimum: in 2026-27, an undergraduate month in Edinburgh costs about GBP 1,546 (more cities in our cost of studying in the UK breakdown).

Scholarships cut the bill but don’t erase it (more in our UK scholarships for Indian students list):

  • Manchester Global Futures: GBP 12,000 a year for three years (GBP 36,000 in total); apply by 30 March 2027 and accept Manchester as your first choice by 15 May 2027. Only for CBSE, CISCE and five named state boards (not Telangana or AP), and not for foundation-year or Medicine courses.
  • Surrey: GBP 5,000 off first-year fees only; closes 24 August 2027.

UCAS 2027 Deadlines and Steps After 12th

13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time is the main UCAS deadline for most undergraduate courses starting in 2027.Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses have an earlier deadline, 15 October 2026. A Class 12 application therefore goes in months before board results arrive.

Universities must consider every application that arrives by then; after it, they consider you only if places remain.

  1. Shortlist up to five choices. For 2027 entry, one GBP 34.50 UCAS fee covers all five.
  2. Write your personal statement: answer three set questions in 4,000 characters in total, at least 350 per answer.
  3. Ask your school for one reference; the teacher writing it can add predicted grades for Class 12 exams still ahead. You may also have to send your Class 10 and 12 results, as certificates or transcripts, to each university yourself.
  4. Accept one offer as your first choice and, if you want, a second as your backup (UCAS calls these firm and insurance).
  5. Get your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), the reference number your university issues for your visa.
  6. Keep the living money in the bank for 28 days in a row, and apply for the visa within 31 days of the last of those days.
  7. Apply for the Student visa up to 6 months before your course starts; from India, a decision usually takes about 3 weeks.
  8. If you’re 16 or 17 when you apply, add written consent from both parents (or one with sole responsibility) and a birth certificate showing their names.

Our UCAS application process for Indian students walks through each screen.

Missed January? Applications in by 30 June 2027 still reach universities; later ones enter Clearing (UCAS’s spare-places system), open 2 July to 23 September 2027. Work rules after graduation are in our post-study work visa guide.

At Edinburgh, yes. Every medicine applicant must sit the UCAT, an admissions test, before applying through UCAS, unless Edinburgh agreed an exemption in advance. For 2027 entry, the cut-off score is 1850, and the last test day was 24 September 2026, before the 15 October 2026 UCAS deadline. If you haven’t sat it, plan for 2028 entry.

Yes: Edinburgh wants a UCAT score and 85% from CBSE or CISCE. To practise in India later, you need NEET-UG before you start (valid 3 years), then India’s screening exam for foreign medical graduates, and the course-length and internship rules of the National Medical Commission. Check them with the NMC before accepting a UK place.
