Rank alone will not tell you whether your board or your budget clears the bar, and that is what most shortlists get wrong. LSE ranks 1st in the United Kingdom in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026, ahead of Imperial College London at 6th and UCL at 9th, according to Time Out's institution-by-institution reading of the guide. That same school sits 62nd in the world on QS 2027, so the two tables answer two different questions.

QS scores several areas at once: research and academic reputation, employability, learning environment, international engagement and sustainability. UK guides use a different methodology, hence the disagreement. The reversal repeats further down that table: Royal Holloway ranks 32nd in the UK, three above Queen Mary at 35th, though Queen Mary holds the top-110 world position. One caution on the QS column: the source used to compile it filters QS to Russell Group members (24 research-intensive UK universities), while QS itself ranks worldwide. Several London names here sit inside the University of London federation.

What does a London degree cost an Indian student in 2026-27?

Among the computer-science programmes selected for this comparison, the highest verified overseas fee for 2026 entry is GBP 46,000 (approx. INR 59,17,330) for the Computing MSc at Imperial College London. Home students on that programme pay GBP 24,600 (approx. INR 31,64,485). That GBP 21,400 gap is Imperial's overseas-versus-home tuition differential.

What this means for you: the programmes above span GBP 17,400 to GBP 47,000, and the three computer-science master’s alone run GBP 35,250 to GBP 46,000. PGT means postgraduate taught, and many full-time taught master’s are completed in one year. Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) follows once the university confirms your place and clears its pre-CAS checks on academics, documents and any deposit.

For 2026/27, UCL’s Computer Science MSc charges overseas students GBP 42,700 against GBP 21,500 for UK students, while Queen Mary’s Advanced Computer Science MSc full-time figure covers the whole programme, not each year. The Greenwich fee table sets one international rate across most undergraduate courses, nursing higher.

Read fees per programme, never per university. Imperial’s Business Analytics and AI MSc charges GBP 47,000, above its own Computing MSc, and City St George’s prices Medicine MBBS at GBP 46,000 against GBP 22,340 for International Political Economy BSc. Which London universities accept your board, and at what percentage?

For 2026-27 entry, Queen Mary University of London publishes a Class XII table that changes by board: an A*AA-equivalent offer needs 90% from CBSE or ISC, 85% from West Bengal and 95% from other boards, on its India entry requirements page. Other-board applicants need five points more than CBSE or ISC for the identical offer, West Bengal five less.

LSE: CBSE and CISCE only, at 95, 90 or 85 per cent

For 2027 entry, LSE’s page for Indian students maps Class XII marks onto A-level offers in three bands, each a minimum rather than a promise:

  • A*AA equivalent: a 95 per cent overall average, with 3 subjects at 95 per cent or above and 2 subjects at 90 per cent or above.
  • AAA equivalent: a 90 per cent overall average, with 5 subjects at 90 per cent or above.
  • AAB equivalent: an 85 per cent overall average, with one or more subjects possibly specified.
  • Maths-led programmes: 95 per cent in Mathematics where the A-level ask is an A*, 90 per cent where it is an A.

LSE evaluates only CBSE, including the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE), and CISCE, so a state-board applicant is not covered by this table. One timing detail helps: English evidence is not needed when you first apply, which defers the test rather than waiving it.

Queen Mary: Class XII requirements vary by Indian board

Never rely on one Queen Mary percentage. For an A*AA-equivalent offer, the “other boards” category needs 95%, against 90% for CBSE or ISC and 85% for West Bengal. In the files we prepare each cycle, this surprises applicants outside the two national boards most often. Queen Mary states that 60% to 80% may be considered for its International Foundation Year; direct entry depends separately on your board, the programme offer and its subject requirements.

King’s College London: grades sit on the course page, not in a regional table

For 2026-27 entry, King’s accepts CBSE and CISCE qualifications. Indian grade equivalencies sit on each undergraduate course page once you select India under International Applicants, so the bar varies by programme and no single university-wide percentage exists. At master’s level it is a UK mark: the International Relations MA asks a high 2:1 at 65% or above, and an Indian 65% is not the same thing.

What your Indian bachelor’s converts to for a London master’s

LSE reads a three-year Indian bachelor’s on five CGPA scales, and dropping four is what makes most conversion charts useless. A 2:1 (upper second-class honours, the standard master’s bar) needs 3.3/4, 5/7, 6/8, 7/9 or 7.6/10; a first class needs 3.5/4, 5.5/7, 6.5/8, 7.5/9 or 8.5/10. Named degrees only: BA, BSc, BCom, BTech or Bachelor of Medicine.

Queen Mary works in percentages, equating 75% to 80% with a first class, 60% to 70% with a 2:1 and 50% to 60% with a 2:2, from selected institutions only. It refuses one qualification outright: the Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) is not considered for master’s entry. What will living in your university’s borough actually cost?

In June 2026, average monthly private rent in Camden, the borough of UCL, SOAS and Birkbeck, reached GBP 2,791 (approx. INR 3,59,028) across all private tenancies, on Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures for the borough. That is the highest of the four boroughs below, and campus location moves a housing budget more than the choice of university does.

Compare the one-bedroom column against the UKVI figure, not the all-tenancies one: UKVI’s amount is per student, while the all-tenancies average covers whole properties of every size. Neither is student-only rent, both are June 2026, and most students rent a room in a share, below the one-bedroom rate.

Camden: the priciest of the four boroughs here

Camden barely moved over the year, holding GBP 2,791 against GBP 2,804 in June 2025. Parents should read that flatness as bad news. A UCL or SOAS offer commits you to this market unless you commute in.

Tower Hamlets, Greenwich and Newham: cheaper ground

Tower Hamlets, home to Queen Mary’s Mile End campus, averaged GBP 2,429 in June 2026, up 2.7%. Greenwich averaged GBP 1,967 after a 5.0% rise, and Newham GBP 1,928 after a 4.2% rise. The cheaper boroughs are rising fastest, so a budget built on today’s Newham figure will drift.

Why the UKVI maintenance figure is a threshold, not a budget

For 2026-27, GOV.UK sets the money you must show at GBP 1,529 per month, for up to 9 months, for a course in London. That sits below a one-bedroom rent in Camden or Tower Hamlets on its own, before food or travel. It is an evidence rule, not a cost estimate, and the money must sit there 28 days in a row; if the balance dips, the clock restarts. Our cost of living in UK guide covers the rest.

From our counselling desk: London budgets break in a predictable order. Rent goes first, because families price the halls offer and then meet the private-sector top-up in year two. Travel goes second. Tuition almost never breaks it, since that number is fixed before the visa is filed. The question is not whether you can afford year one, but what happens if the deposit lands in Camden rather than Newham.

Momentum of that kind matters more than a static position when the degree finishes three years from now.

Run the budget filter before the ranking filter. A family working to a ceiling near INR 25 lakh a year will struggle among the best universities in London, because the cheapest verified undergraduate rate here eats most of it before rent. Brunel’s Uxbridge campus and Westminster’s central site also carry very different travel costs on similar fees.

Is London worth its premium over Manchester or Edinburgh?

London ranks 3rd in the QS Best Student Cities Ranking 2027, behind Seoul and Tokyo, in the edition QS released on 21 July 2026. That position is measured across 150 cities in 59 higher education systems, so it is a genuinely global result rather than a European one.

The same edition carries the counterweight, and it deserves stating plainly. London scores 97.3 overall but only 14.4 for Affordability, a gap between academic strength and living costs. Edinburgh sits 13th overall, Glasgow 31st, Manchester 40th, on the UK breakdown of the same ranking. The question is whether the world’s third-best student city is worth what it costs.

The visa side puts a number on it. For Student visa purposes you must evidence GBP 358 more per month in London than outside it, GBP 1,529 against GBP 1,171. That is a financial-evidence threshold, not a measure of what living there actually costs more. The outcomes benchmark is narrower than most pages admit. In 2023/24, 87% of survey respondents were in work or further study about 15 months on. Separately, the median salary was GBP 30,000 (approx. INR 38,59,128) for UK-domiciled first-degree graduates in full-time UK employment. Neither is a London number, nor what an Indian graduate earns. A Graduate visa lasts 18 months for a non-doctoral graduate applying on or after 1 January 2027, 3 years with a doctorate.

Which other London universities should be on your list?

Eight more London institutions carry a UK-wide position in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026, from Royal Holloway at 32nd to Brunel at 117th, on Time Out's reading of the guide. Rank is only the entry point here: international fees at this end start below GBP 18,000 and subject strength varies more than position suggests.

These are UK-wide positions, not a London league of eight. Fees at this end sit on course pages, not a central table, so quote them per programme: Westminster’s International Business and Management MSc is GBP 18,000, and Brunel’s Computer Science (Digital Media and Games) BSc GBP 17,400.

Other universities Indian applicants often consider include London Metropolitan, Kingston, Middlesex, London South Bank, East London, West London and Roehampton. Several publish official 2026-27 international fees on their course or fee pages, Middlesex at GBP 17,200 for International Business BA among them, but they sit outside the detailed comparison in this guide.

The London shortlist mistakes we fix every intake

Five errors account for most of the London shortlists we rebuild, ordered by how expensive each is to discover late.

  1. Reading a part-time fee as the full-time fee. Queen Mary’s Advanced Computer Science MSc costs GBP 17,650 per annum part-time over two years, and that lower figure is what search snippets surface. Part-time study can qualify for the Student route above degree level with an eligible sponsor, but Appendix Student permits no employment on it, so check sponsorship before comparing it with a full-time fee.
  2. Assuming a computer science MSc wants computer science graduates. For 2026/27 entry, UCL’s Computer Science MSc requires an upper second-class degree in a subject other than computer science or information technology, and Imperial’s Computing MSc applies the same exclusion. B.Tech CSE applicants are ineligible for the two programmes aggregators name most often.
  3. Choosing Applied Maths in Class XI. From 2027/28 entry, LSE will not accept CBSE or ISC Applied Mathematics as equivalent to A-level Mathematics for programmes that require A-level Maths, where Standard Mathematics will be required. A student picking streams now is inside that window.
  4. Mistaking a central fee page for the overseas fee. The GBP 9,790 headline on UCL’s and Imperial’s undergraduate fee pages is the Home fee. International applicants should use the relevant course page or the university’s official overseas fee schedule.
  5. Assuming one fee applies across City St George’s. Fees differ sharply by programme there: Medicine MBBS is GBP 46,000 for international students against GBP 22,340 for International Political Economy BSc. Check the course and entry year.

The fourth mistake misleads whole families. For 2026-27, UCL’s undergraduate fee schedule and Imperial’s tuition fees page both state GBP 9,790. Both are Home fees, and reading one as your own understates year one by tens of thousands. Imperial’s 2026 Computing BEng is GBP 45,500 a year for overseas students.

One protection exists, and it is university-specific. Most UCL overseas undergraduates get a cohort guarantee, so the fee normally holds for the whole programme; MBBS Medicine and intercalated years are excluded, and UCL may pass on government-imposed charges. Queen Mary instead raises continuing-student fees yearly, usually by no more than 10%. Over three years that gap is worth checking before comparing headline fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

No official count exists, which is why published figures disagree. One page says 21, another 87, a third over 40. The answer depends on whether University of London member institutions are counted separately, and whether conservatoires and private providers are included.

There is no single answer, because the deciding variable is your board and your budget, not the ranking. Master’s study accounted for over 60% of all Sponsored Study visas across nationalities over the last six years, and Indian nationals were separately the largest group in the year ending March 2026 with 90,425 main-applicant visas.

That depends on what the location buys you, because the visa charges are identical wherever you study. As at July 2026, applying from outside the UK costs GBP 558 (approx. INR 71,780), and the Immigration Health Surcharge costs GBP 776 (approx. INR 99,823) a year for students. London adds rent and a higher maintenance threshold, not paperwork.

Some do, some do not, and the split is published. Queen Mary lists other boards at a higher percentage than CBSE or ISC. LSE and King’s name only CBSE and CISCE, though King’s welcomes around 740 students a year from across South Asia, so a narrow board list is not a volume signal.
