For 2026-27 entry, the PTE score required for UK universities runs from 55 to 76 overall across the standard bands and course examples verified for this guide, and the per-skill floors underneath are usually the harder gate. Separately, the Student and Child Student caseworker guidance updated in March 2026 sets level B2 for study at degree level and above on the Student route, the UK’s study visa. B2 is the upper-intermediate rung of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). For many degree applicants that visa standard isn’t the binding number, because a qualifying university may assess English itself.

What PTE score do UK universities require for 2026-27 entry?

UK universities set PTE Academic bands individually, not nationally. Across nine institutions checked for 2026-27 entry, published bands run from 55 to 76 overall. For 2026 entry, the University of Birmingham international postgraduate entry requirements set 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills for most postgraduate taught programmes. The binding number belongs to the programme.

Check your offer letter first. The PTE score required for UK entry is set per programme, so two courses at one university publish different numbers. As of July 2026, PTE Academic scores run from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English (Pearson’s own scoring scale), so a bare minimum PTE score for UK means little. Undergraduate and postgraduate bands: where the bar sits

Requirements are set by course and department, and master’s programmes often, though not always, set higher requirements. A PTE score for undergraduate in UK applications that misses one component by a point is short, whatever the overall says. Why one university publishes four different PTE numbers

The programme picks the band, not the university. Oxford, Cambridge, University College London, Warwick, Edinburgh, Durham, Coventry, and Northumbria carry no published figure here; their requirements vary by course, so no single PTE score for UK universities exists.

PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI: which one do you actually book?

PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home both sit on the GOV.UK secure English language test (SELT) approved provider list; plain PTE Academic does not. PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI share content, format and scoring, and the UKVI sitting carries a Unique Reference Number (URN). Many degree applicants need neither.

When your university assesses your English itself

Three conditions in Appendix English Language EL 8.1 must hold. The course is at degree level or above. Your sponsor is a Higher Education Provider (HEP) with a track record of compliance. And the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), the electronic reference your university issues, must state the assessment and its method. A sponsor licence on its own isn’t enough. Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine does this: its country information for India waives the test at 85% in Standard XII CBSE or CISCE.

When the Home Office requires a UKVI SELT

A missing qualification doesn’t automatically force a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) sitting: at degree level the EL 8.1 concession can apply. For a standalone below-degree course a SELT is normally required, and the GOV.UK Student visa: knowledge of English page sends you to an approved provider. Outside the UK: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT, and Pearson.

A medium-of-instruction letter is not one of them: not a SELT, and the Rules never name it. Manchester tells Indian applicants that confirmation of English as the mode of instruction is not accepted. You booked PTE Academic and needed UKVI – now what?

Email admissions before rebooking. We see students rebook when the university would have accepted the standard version. Ask one question: does the offer require a SELT, or may the provider assess English itself under its compliance record? If the second, your PTE Academic result may still be accepted, subject to the university’s own rules.

Which PTE number equals CEFR B2 for the Student visa?

PTE Academic UKVI scores of 59 or higher in each of the four sections meet CEFR level B2 for study at degree level and above, according to Pearson's PTE UK visa information. GOV.UK publishes the CEFR level; Pearson publishes the matching number. Below degree level, the standard drops to B1.

The PTE requirement for UK visa purposes is written in four skills, not one number. Where PTE Academic UKVI is the visa evidence, you meet the level in all four or not at all. Where a qualifying HEP assesses your English, the caseworker sees a CAS entry naming the method used, not a score report.

Why a passing overall PTE score still gets applications rejected

Each component minimum is an independent requirement; clearing the overall figure does not make up for missing one. For 2026 entry, MSc Public Policy at the University of Glasgow sets Reading 62, Listening 62, Speaking 75 and Writing 68 as separate floors under a 65 overall. An applicant clearing the overall band but landing below the speaking floor is rejected.

Those four numbers aren’t symmetrical. Speaking is the highest floor on that page and reading the lowest. Most rows in the table above use equal component floors, so Glasgow’s MSc Public Policy is the exception: some programmes set a different requirement per skill. Subtest scores, your mark in one of the four skills, quietly do the real work. Queen Mary goes further on some courses: its programmes with non-standard English requirements ask 79 overall with 76 in every skill for the clinical doctorates and Law research degrees.

A second, separate trap: Birmingham accepts only your most recent English test score, and Queen Mary normally does the same. A later weaker sitting can wipe out an earlier stronger one.

If one skill is your weak one, buy preparation time for that skill alone, because lifting your overall won’t rescue it.

From our counselling desk: of the three ways a PTE file goes wrong, a missed per-skill floor costs students the most. It is the one nobody checks, because the overall number looks fine and the report gives no warning. Booking the wrong variant is usually recoverable, and often harmless at degree level because the provider self-assesses anyway. Reaching for an old PTE Academic Online result used to be the expensive mistake; the arithmetic above has now closed that route entirely, so if someone offers to sell you one, it is not a bargain, it is worthless. Ranked by damage today: per-skill floor first, wrong variant second.

Does your university accept PTE Online or PTE Home?

Version acceptance is published separately from the score, and it varies. For 2026 entry, the University of Manchester English language requirements accept PTE Academic in both UKVI and non-UKVI form but reject PTE Academic Online and PTE Academic Home outright. A valid score from the wrong version carries no weight in admissions.

Version policy across PTE accepted universities in UK is nowhere near uniform:

  • Refuse PTE Academic Online: Manchester (which also refuses PTE Home), Leeds, Sheffield, Westminster, and Glasgow’s MSc Public Policy.
  • Refuse it in effect: Imperial takes online results only for courses starting up to 31 December 2023.
  • Still list it, but stale: Birmingham, and Queen Mary, which accepted-tests list still names it. Both require a test no more than two years old at course start, which closes the door their lists appear to leave open.
  • Silent: Nottingham alone, and silence is not a ban either way.

The two names trip people up. PTE Academic Online genuinely was taken at home: Pearson launched it in January 2022 for Covid and, per Ofqual’s notice of monetary penalty, withdrew it in November 2023. Pearson had bulk-revoked 9,910 results from early 2023, judging that malpractice had affected online delivery, and offered appeals and free retests. Ofqual later found that 11 of the 276 who resat at a centre scored comparably, indicating some genuine results were caught. Three universities dropped the test. PTE Home, despite the name, is the test-centre product. So no Online result can now sit inside a two-year window: the last possible sitting expired around November 2025.

Westminster goes further. The University of Westminster English language requirements state that it cannot accept scores across more than one PTE Academic test, so a single sitting has to carry every component. Glasgow’s MSc Public Policy sets the same condition, and those are the only two of the nine pages that state it explicitly. Silence elsewhere is not permission, so confirm the rule course by course. PTE Home is a different product again: Pearson’s PTE Home is a test-centre exam in speaking and listening only, marked pass or fail at one CEFR level. It is an approved SELT and it issues its own reference number, but its levels serve family, settlement and citizenship routes. The Student route needs all four skills. Foundation, pathway and pre-sessional: where the PTE rules change

Below-degree study changes the rule twice. For 2026 entry, the University of Leeds entry requirements list two pre-sessional English routes at identical scores: 43 overall with no less than 43 in each component. One requires PTE Academic UKVI, the other plain PTE Academic. Same number, different test, different visa consequence.

Identical numbers, different tests: the score tells you nothing about which version to book. Below degree level (the Home Office term for foundation, pathway, and pre-sessional courses) the Student route asks for CEFR B1, and a SELT is required where no other provision is met. So a below-degree route sets the PTE score for UK for Indian students twice over: once by the visa, once by the college.

  1. Confirm in writing whether your course is below degree level. A foundation certificate (a one-year bridging qualification) and a pathway programme (a preparation course leading into a named degree) usually are.
  2. Ask the college whether its route is the SELT route or the non-SELT route, by email.
  3. If it’s the SELT route, book PTE Academic UKVI at 43 or above in each of the four skills, and keep the reference number for the visa form.

A SELT is not automatic down here. Leeds spells out the trigger: a Student-visa applicant needs one unless eligible for a combined CAS covering the pre-sessional and the degree together, and needs none at all if the pre-sessional is studied online. Standard XII students hit this most often, and the foundation year is the fallback, not the default. Manchester’s country specific information for India considers CBSE or ISC Standard XII at 80-95% overall for direct first-year entry. Edinburgh’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences asks 80% overall with three subjects at 75%. Manchester’s integrated foundation year, for Science and Engineering only, starts at 70% overall with 75% in Maths and Physics and 65% in English; Biosciences is considered case by case. What does the PTE cost, and how long does your score last?

PTE Academic costs from INR 18,000 for the standard test fee in India, according to Pearson India. A PTE Academic score is then valid for two years from the test date. That window is Pearson's; individual UK universities set their own, and the shorter of the two binds an application.

  • Results usually arrive in two days, and can take up to five business days.
  • PTE Academic UKVI is taken on a computer at an authorised test centre.
  • Pearson’s PTE test centers and fees finder shows the current price and dates for your nearest centre.
  • Glasgow’s MSc Public Policy page allows a test taken up to 2 years 5 months before the programme starts, so windows do vary.

Now the honest cost. That two-day turnaround is genuinely fast. But a single weak component usually sends you back for the whole test, and Pearson charges the full fee again. Budget the PTE score needed for UK entry as a two-attempt exercise from the start.

Parents, this is the line that decides whether the money is at risk: a rebook is a second full test fee, not a top-up. Book the sitting when all four skills are ready, not when the deadline is close.

Work in this order. Pull the subtest floors for every course on your shortlist, compare them against your weakest skill rather than your overall, then confirm with admissions which test version they read. The PTE score required for UK entry is only settled once those three answers agree.
