Top Universities in UK for Masters 2027: Ranked List, Fees and Entry Bar

Top Universities in UK for Masters
Top Universities in UK for Masters

The top universities in UK for masters start with Imperial College London, Oxford, Cambridge and UCL: in the QS World University Rankings 2027, four UK universities sit inside the global top 10, from 93 ranked UK institutions. That is a wide shortlist for one country, and rank is the least useful way to narrow it. Every name below carries a verified 2026/27 fee, the entry bar it publishes for Indian degrees, and the deadlines that decide whether you make the 2027 cycle at all.

Key Takeaways

  • QS 2027 ranks Imperial 2nd, Oxford 4th, Cambridge 6th and UCL 8th, from 93 ranked UK institutions.
  • Verified 2026/27 tuition runs GBP 17,000 at Teesside (INR 21.78 lakh) to GBP 46,000 at Imperial (INR 58.92 lakh).
  • Fees are set course by course: York spans GBP 26,900 to 34,500 (INR 34.46 to 44.19 lakh) inside one university.
  • UCL asks a CGPA of 7.5/10 from Category 1 Indian institutions and 8.0/10 from Category 2, for the same 2:1 equivalent.
  • Chevening 2027/2028 closes 6 October 2026; the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship pays GBP 1,712 a month (INR 2.19 lakh).
  • A Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027.
  • No UK-wide postgraduate acceptance-rate dataset exists. Shortlist on published fees and entry bars.

Imperial College London ranks 2nd in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June 2026, with Oxford 4th, Cambridge 6th and UCL 8th, from 93 ranked UK institutions. Four top-10 targets in one country is unusual, and it is why a UK shortlist stays short.

Use that table to break a tie, never to build the shortlist. QS publishes only its top 10 openly, so positions from 35th down are those reported by The Tab, from the QS World University Rankings 2027, covering the 24 Russell Group universities, the UK’s research-intensive group. Our study in UK guide covers the wider country picture.

A blank in the second column means the university sits outside the Complete University Guide‘s top 12, not that it is unranked. It weights entry standards, student satisfaction and graduate prospects, so it answers a different question from QS rather than correcting it. Read a wide gap between the two as a prompt to open the department page, not as one table being wrong. Five of its top 10 appear on no QS-led competitor list: St Andrews (4th), Durham (6th), Loughborough (8th), Bath (9th) and Lancaster (10th). The mission groups behind that gap sit in our guide to the types of UK universities.

Master’s tuition at UK universities: the 2026/27 fee spread

Verified 2026/27 international tuition for a one-year postgraduate taught (PGT) master's runs from GBP 17,000 at Teesside University to GBP 46,000 for Imperial's MSc Computing. That is a 2.7 times spread on the same qualification, because a UK master's fee is set course by course, not by the university's rank.

UniversityCourseInternational feeWhat the figure covers
University of YorkTaught master’s, by subjectGBP 26,900 to 34,500 (INR 34.46 to 44.19 lakh)Per year; arts and humanities up to MSc Accounting and Finance
University of GreenwichMSc Advanced Chemical EngineeringGBP 18,700 (INR 23.95 lakh)Per year, full-time, in London
Sheffield Hallam UniversityMSc Data Science and AIGBP 18,600 (INR 23.83 lakh)The whole one-year course, not a yearly rate
Teesside UniversityMSc or MA, one yearGBP 17,000 (INR 21.78 lakh)The whole degree, plus a GBP 4,000 deposit (INR 5.12 lakh)

Parents, read the fourth column before the third. York’s taught master’s fees run 28% apart inside one university, so “York costs X” is never a usable planning number: price the course, never the institution. Greenwich breaks the London-is-unaffordable assumption at under GBP 19,000 full-time, one of several in our guide to the best universities in London.

Two scope traps cost families money. Sheffield Hallam’s GBP 18,600 covers the whole course, so annualising it invents a figure that does not exist and nearly doubles your loan request. Teesside’s GBP 4,000 deposit falls due before the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued, months ahead of the loan disbursement families plan around.

Tuition is not the whole government-facing bill. A Student visa costs GBP 558 and the Immigration Health Surcharge GBP 776 a year, billed on the permission granted rather than your course length, so a 12-month master’s granted 14 to 16 months pays about 1.5 times. Year-one costs sit in our cost of studying in the UK guide and the lower fee band in our affordable universities in the UK list. One honest limit: 2027/28 fees are not published sector-wide as at August 2026, so treat every figure here as a 2026/27 anchor and expect a modest rise in the offer letter.

Entry requirements for a UK master’s with an Indian bachelor’s

Where you took your bachelor's moves the bar, not only what you scored on it. UCL asks a Category 1 institution's graduate for a CGPA of 7.5/10, and a Category 2 graduate for 8.0/10, for the same upper second-class honours (2:1) equivalent. Two applicants with identical marks get different answers from the same university.

That tiering appears on no competitor shortlist, and it decides more applications than families expect. Category 1 covers Institutes of National Importance, Institutes of Eminence, top-ranked NIRF institutions and select autonomous colleges. Look up your own institution’s category before you shortlist, not after the rejection: in the 2026 files we ran, the applications that stalled had assumed a 60% aggregate cleared every 2:1 bar in the country.

UniversityPublished Indian barScope
UCLCGPA 7.5/10 or 60% from Category 1 institutions; CGPA 8.0/10 or 65% from Category 2Institution-tiered, for a 2:1 equivalent
Queen Mary University of London60% to 70% is a UK 2:1; 50% to 60% is a 2:2; the Bachelor of Vocation is not considered for master’s entryA guide only; conditions vary by awarding institution
University of ManchesterTypically 60% to 80% overallDepends on the quality of the university of prior study

No single “2:1 equals X per cent” conversion exists, and Manchester’s own page proves it: a 20-point range on one line, resolved by the reputation of your undergraduate university. Treat any percentage on an agent’s page as a starting guess and confirm it against the university’s own India page before you pay an application fee. Queen Mary’s rule is the sharpest of the three, because the Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) is refused outright for master’s entry.

English works the same way. UCL sets five English language levels, from 6.5 overall at Level 1 to 8.0 at Level 5, and assigns one per programme. Its MSc Computer Science sits at Level 2, so a single university-wide UCL score is meaningless: check your own programme page. A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is not universally required either, since degree-level providers may assess your English themselves, a route our guide on how to study in the UK without IELTS explains.

Scholarships open now for a 2027/28 UK master’s

Chevening Scholarships for 2027/2028 are open as of 6 August 2026 and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC, per the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Chevening runs one deadline across every eligible country and funds a one-year master's, which leaves nine weeks of runway.

For the family budget, the Commonwealth award is the one with published numbers. The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship pays a stipend of GBP 1,712 a month, or GBP 2,000 in the London metropolitan area, plus approved tuition in full and a return airfare. Across a 12-month master’s the stipend alone totals GBP 20,544, or GBP 24,000 in London.

  • Chevening: closes 6 October 2026. Prepare this one first; it shuts two weeks before the Commonwealth window.
  • Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship: opens 8 September 2026, closes 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST, for study from autumn 2027.
  • GREAT Scholarships: a British Council scheme run with participating UK universities. Its 2027 amounts and university list are not yet published.

Do not build a funding plan on these two. Between them they take a few hundred students a year across every eligible country, while university fee discounts are awarded in far greater numbers and ask for nothing beyond your admission application. Chase the national awards second, not first. Our guide to scholarships to study in the UK for Indian students lists the university schemes alongside the national ones.

Application timeline for a September 2027 UK master’s

Work backwards from the funding deadlines, not from the university ones. Most UK master's courses admit on a rolling basis with no single national cut-off, so the fixed dates in your calendar belong to the scholarship bodies and the visa rules, and those fall a year before you fly.

DateWhat closes or changesWhy it binds
8 September 2026Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship opensNeeds an admission application already in progress
6 October 2026Chevening 2027/2028 closes, 11:00 UTCOne global deadline; no country extension
20 October 2026Commonwealth closes, 16:00 BSTTwo weeks after Chevening, so both fit one autumn
31 December 2026Last day to apply for a 2-year Graduate visaApplications from 1 January 2027 get 18 months

The December date is the one most families miss, because it looks like a visa detail rather than an admissions one. It is not: it sets the value of the degree’s post-study window, and no September 2027 starter can reach it. Treat 18 months as your planning assumption and be pleased if your own timing beats it. Course deadlines themselves vary by university and by department, and the admission cycle sits in our September intake in the UK guide.

What a UK master’s is worth after you graduate

The post-study window is shrinking, and the date that decides yours has nothing to do with your university. It is the day you submit the application, not the day your course starts, so nobody beginning a master's in September 2026 can reach the longer grant.

Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027, with doctoral graduates keeping 3 years as the only exception. Price the switch before you count the months: the route costs a GBP 937 application fee plus the healthcare surcharge at the standard non-student rate of GBP 1,035 a year, so an 18-month grant costs about GBP 1,552 in surcharge alone. Budget it as part of the degree, not as an afterthought in your final term.

Work rights during the master’s are narrower than most pages admit. Appendix Student sets three tiers, and the widely quoted 20-hour figure covers only one of them.

  • Full-time, degree level, sponsored by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance: 20 hours a week in term time, full-time outside term time.
  • Full-time below degree level with that kind of sponsor: 10 hours a week in term time.
  • All other study, including every part-time course: no employment permitted.

Check your university’s published term dates before taking vacation-rate hours, because a taught master’s dissertation period is often still term time and institutions set that themselves. Getting this wrong is a visa breach, not a payroll error. What those hours pay is set nationally, and our guide to the UK minimum wage for international students breaks the rates down by age band.

Back home, recognition runs through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) equivalence certificate. Its Evaluation Division grants equivalence to degrees from accredited foreign universities case by case, and its published page sets no minimum duration for a foreign master’s. If you will need the degree for UGC-NET, an Indian PhD or a government post, confirm your own course’s position before you rely on it rather than after you return.

Common mistakes that cost Indian applicants an intake

Each of these costs a full year rather than a resubmission, and they cluster in the same place: applicants trust a number they read somewhere instead of the number the university publishes.

  • Assuming one percentage clears every 2:1 bar. UCL’s own threshold moves by 5 points depending on your institution’s category, and Manchester’s spans 20. Check each target, not the average.
  • Annualising a whole-course fee. Sheffield Hallam’s GBP 18,600 and Teesside’s GBP 17,000 are total-course figures. Doubling them for a “two-year” budget inflates your loan request against a one-year degree.
  • Budgeting the deposit late. Teesside’s GBP 4,000 falls due before the CAS, which is before most education loans disburse.
  • Trusting acceptance-rate percentages. No UK-wide postgraduate dataset publishes them, so any figure you find was estimated by whoever wrote the page.
  • Sending four top-10 applications. A shortlist with no band below the top 10 has no fallback, and a one-year master’s leaves no second year to recover.

How to pick the best universities in UK for masters for your profile

No UK-wide postgraduate acceptance-rate dataset is published, so every admission percentage circulating for UK master's courses traces back to nothing. A shortlist built on admission odds is built on nothing. Rank instead on figures that do exist, which is every fee and entry bar above, because each one is published by the university itself.

Two of those published figures do the work, in this order.

  1. Subject fit. Does the department lead your field, and does the module list match the job you want? Nothing else here can be fixed later.
  2. Total fee. The course fee in rupees, against your funding and any loan sanction from HDFC Credila, Avanse or SBI.
  3. City cost. London adds rent; Manchester and Glasgow stretch the same budget further.
  4. Rank. Use QS or the Complete University Guide only to separate two courses that survived the first three filters.

A top-10 name in a field it does not lead, at GBP 46,000, is a worse buy than a 40th-ranked department at GBP 35,200 that recruits into your industry, and a one-year master’s gives you no second year to recover from a wrong pick. Where the order changes is with your own constraint:

  • Budget-led: start at the fee table, not the rank table. A non-London university at GBP 18,600 for the course leaves room for a second cycle if the first one misses.
  • Career-led: weigh the department’s employer links above its global position, and check which firms recruit on that campus before you pay the deposit.
  • Worried about rejection: spread the shortlist across rank bands instead of sending four top-10 applications, and pick universities whose published Indian bar you clear outright.

The same trade-off runs through business schools in our MBA in UK guide.

From our counselling desk: across our 2026 UK master's files, the shortlists that moved fastest were built subject-first. Applicants who led with the department and its employer links, then used league-table position only to break a tie, cleared offer conditions with far less back-and-forth. It held at every budget level, so this is not about who could afford London.

Frequently Asked Questions

No single university wins, because the ranking bodies disagree. QS 2027 puts Imperial 2nd and Cambridge 6th; the Complete University Guide 2027 puts Cambridge 1st and Imperial 5th. Pick the department leading your subject, then use either table to separate close offers.

At Manchester, yes. Its India page considers applicants holding a minimum three-year degree with First Class from a reputable university. Other universities set their own rule, and some ask for a four-year degree in specific subjects, so check each target against the bars above.

There is no single number. UCL asks 7.5 out of 10 from a Category 1 institution and 8.0 from Category 2 for the same 2:1 equivalent. Manchester quotes 60 to 80 per cent depending on your undergraduate university, so check each target separately.

They are not published sector-wide as at August 2026. Every verified figure in this guide is 2026/27 or 2026 entry. Universities confirm the 2027/28 amount in the offer letter, so budget against the current anchors and treat a modest annual rise as likely.

No. The Graduate Route does not read league tables. What matters is that you completed an eligible course with a sponsor that is a higher education provider with a track record of compliance. You must also apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires.

Ardent Overseas counsels Indian students on UK admissions from its Hyderabad and Tirupati offices, covering shortlisting, Indian-equivalence checks against each university’s published bar, CAS timing and the Student visa file.
