Affordable Universities in Sweden for Indian Students: 2026 Fees in INR The most affordable universities in Sweden for Indian students
The cost of studying in Sweden for Indian students lands between SEK 172,400 and SEK 336,400 in year one, and tuition is the line that moves it most. For 2026/27, tuition runs from about SEK 80,000 to SEK 320,000 per academic year on the Swedish Institute’s published band. Sweden is tuition-free only for citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. An Indian passport means full fees. And two Swedish price tags are almost never the same unit: KTH’s SEK 360,000 is a whole two-year degree, Uppsala’s SEK 90,000 buys one semester, Stockholm’s SEK 140,000 covers a year. Divide every published figure to a year before you compare, or you will rank your shortlist backwards. The two fixed charges below are the ones nobody avoids, and the third number is the one families miscount.
Key Takeaways
Swedish universities are tuition-free for citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland only; Indian students pay published fees in full. As of August 2026, the Swedish Migration Agency charges SEK 1,500 (about INR 14,762) for an adult application under its residence permit for studies route. Tuition, proved living funds and that permit fee are three separate lines.
You join the fee-paying group the moment your passport is Indian, and there’s no exemption to apply for. Permanent residents of Sweden are the only non-citizens outside that group. So the cost of studying in Sweden for Indian students starts with the fee schedule rather than the scholarship page. Our guide to studying in Sweden covers admission and eligibility.

In 2026, University Admissions in Sweden charges one single application fee per semester, however many programmes you apply to, so four choices cost the same SEK 900 as one. Fill all four slots. As at August 2026, the same agency that issues your permit reports that 75% of recently decided study-permit cases were decided within 3 months, so three months is the planning number between paying and packing.
The judgment that saves Indian families the most money is unglamorous: build the budget on the full published fee and treat any tuition waiver as a bonus, never as the plan. Waivers at Swedish universities are competitive and awarded late. A family that has already borrowed against a discount it did not win is the one that ends up short in February.
For 2026/27, tuition averages SEK 160,000 per academic year, or about INR 15.75 lakh, on the Swedish Institute’s Fees and costs figures. The average hides two problems. The spread is enormous, and the number a university prints may cover a semester, a year or an entire programme.
| University or source | Published figure | What it covers | Per year (SEK) | Per year (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stockholm University, humanities, social sciences and law | SEK 90,000 | Per academic year | 90,000 | INR 8.86 lakh |
| Stockholm University, sciences | SEK 140,000 | Per academic year | 140,000 | INR 13.78 lakh |
| KTH Royal Institute of Technology, most master’s | SEK 360,000 | Full two-year programme | about 180,000 | INR 17.71 lakh |
| Uppsala University, master’s | SEK 49,500 to 90,000 | Per semester | about 99,000 to 180,000 | INR 9.74 to 17.71 lakh |
| Karolinska Institutet, two-year master’s | SEK 330,000 to 400,000 | Full two-year programme | about 165,000 to 200,000 | INR 16.24 to 19.68 lakh |
| Malmo University, one-year master’s | SEK 110,000 to 195,000 | Full one-year programme | 110,000 to 195,000 | INR 10.83 to 19.19 lakh |
| Malmo University, two-year master’s | SEK 220,000 to 430,000 | Full two-year programme | about 110,000 to 215,000 | INR 10.83 to 21.16 lakh |
| Jonkoping University, JIBS bachelor’s | SEK 115,000 | Per academic year | 115,000 | INR 11.32 lakh |
| Jonkoping University, JIBS master’s | SEK 138,000 to 140,000 | Per academic year | 138,000 to 140,000 | INR 13.58 to 13.78 lakh |
| National band, Swedish Institute | SEK 80,000 to 320,000 | Per academic year | 80,000 to 320,000 | INR 7.87 to 31.49 lakh |
Read the third column before the fourth. A KTH offer letter showing SEK 360,000 and a Stockholm offer showing SEK 90,000 are not four times apart; they are roughly two times apart, because one is a programme and one is a year. Our Sweden university guide covers the format each institution uses.
Swedish Institute subject bands for 2026/27:
Uppsala’s own semester price is quoted two ways, SEK 49,500 to SEK 90,000 and SEK 50,000 to SEK 72,500, so budget on the wider band until your offer letter names the fee.
At Gothenburg, Lund and Linkoping the fee follows the programme, not the institution, so there is no annual number to look up. Shortlist the programme first, then price it from that programme’s own page, and expect two courses in one faculty to differ. Until you have the real figure, plan on SEK 140,000 to SEK 190,000 for a lab-based master’s and SEK 90,000 to SEK 135,000 for a classroom one.
So the biggest lever on your fee bill is the field you choose, not the name on the building. A social sciences master’s costs less than an engineering master’s, whatever the university’s reputation. If the fee is the binding constraint, start from the subject band and then shortlist on price, which is what our list of affordable Swedish universities does.
A student month in Sweden runs from SEK 6,400 in Linkoping to SEK 18,360 in Gothenburg. Rent drives most of that gap and course books drive the rest, so the city on your offer letter sets your monthly outgoing before you have unpacked.
| City or university | Per month (SEK) | Per month (INR) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linkoping University | 6,400 to 13,100 | INR 62,986 to 1,28,925 | Excludes course literature and furnishings |
| Lund University | 8,900 to 13,500 | INR 87,590 to 1,32,862 | Lund publishes components, not a total |
| Uppsala University | 9,500 to 11,600 | INR 93,495 to 1,14,163 | Average student month |
| Gothenburg, University of Gothenburg | 10,525 to 17,525 | INR 1,03,583 to 1,72,474 | Private rent pushes the top end |
| Stockholm, Stockholm University | at least 12,000 | at least INR 1,18,099 | Rent SEK 6,500 of that |
| Gothenburg, Chalmers | 14,360 to 18,360 | INR 1,41,325 to 1,80,692 | Includes SEK 3,000 for course literature |
For 2026, budget SEK 750 a month for course books, and four times that if you are heading into engineering or law (Swedish Institute). As at February 2026, Chalmers tells its own students to set aside SEK 3,000 a month; Lund puts course literature at SEK 400 to SEK 1,000. The gap is the reading list, not the city, and it is the line most families leave off the spreadsheet.
Gothenburg can cost more than Stockholm, which is the finding that upsets most carefully built spreadsheets. The published Chalmers range tops out above what Stockholm University tells its students to budget, and the national baseline sits over 3,300 kronor below the Gothenburg midpoint. There is no cheap-city rule in Sweden. There is only a cheap-housing rule, and housing is allocated by queue.
Which is why we tell every family in our Hyderabad counselling sessions the same thing: apply for student housing the day your admission is confirmed, not the day your permit arrives. The queue, not the city, decides whether you pay the bottom or the top of these ranges. Students who wait for the permit end up in the private market at SEK 6,000 to SEK 10,000 a month instead of subsidised student housing.
For permit applications made in 2026, the Swedish Migration Agency sets a maintenance requirement of SEK 10,656 per month, about INR 1,04,872, under its residence permit for studies rules. Chalmers puts that at SEK 138,528 over 13 months, about INR 13.63 lakh. It is not an extra cost. It is your living budget, proved in advance.
So don’t add it to your living-cost total. Budgets that list tuition, then living costs, then “proof of funds” as a third line triple-count the same money. The maintenance requirement is simply the monthly amount the Migration Agency wants to see you can live on, sitting in an account instead of being spent.
Two details decide whether your file clears. The figure is keyed to the year you apply, not the year you study, so a 2026 application is assessed on the 2026 amount. And the funds must cover the full permit period, which is why a 12-month course doesn’t mean 12 months of money.
From our counselling desk: across the Sweden files we prepared for the autumn 2026 intake, the commonest reason a funds file went back for rework was a fixed deposit locked past the permit start date. Second was money still sitting in a parent's account on the statement date. Neither is a shortage of money. Both are the wrong account on the wrong date.
A locked fixed deposit is the most common own-goal on Indian files, because families read “show the balance” and reach for the safest instrument they own. Break it early or fund a separate savings account instead. What a bank statement must show, and how a loan sanction letter should be worded, sit in our Sweden proof of funds guide. Statements go stale, so draw yours close to the application date. The rest of the file takes longer than applicants expect, which is what the documents required for Sweden are there to pace.
The most repeated piece of Sweden scholarship advice given to Indian students is wrong. For the 2026 round, the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals is open to 34 countries, and India is not one of them. The published list runs from Armenia to Zambia and includes Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. There’s no appeal route.
That matters because of what an Indian student is being told to chase. For the 2026 round, the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals covers full tuition plus SEK 12,000 a month and a SEK 15,000 travel grant. None of it is available on an Indian passport. What is available is the university tuition waiver, and four of them are worth your February.
Chase the university waiver, not the national award. And note the mechanic that quietly decides most of them:the Lund programme must be your first choice on the national application, so your ranking order at University Admissions is itself a scholarship decision. Students who rank a scholarship programme second have already lost it, whatever their grades say.
Treat a part-time job as a cushion, never a funding plan. A study permit granted since 11 June 2026 allows fifteen hours of term-time work a week, and summer sits outside that cap.
Check the grant date on your own permit decision, because your file is decided against the Migration Agency’s new rules for study permits. A permit granted before 11 June 2026 keeps the older terms.
Sweden sets no statutory minimum wage, so there is no official hourly student rate to quote. No government source publishes one. Wages are set employer by employer through collective agreements. Plan your budget as if you earn nothing, and treat what you do earn as a cushion.
The honest anchor sits after graduation, not during. In 2025, the average monthly salary across the whole Swedish economy was SEK 42,900, on Statistics Sweden’s average monthly salary by sector series. That is every employee at every career stage, not a graduate starting salary.
In 2026, after a bachelor’s or master’s you can be granted a residence permit to look for work for up to one year. It carries the same SEK 1,500 adult application fee again. And part-time earnings cannot build your proof of funds: that money has to be in the account before you apply, months before you are legally allowed to earn a krona in Sweden.
Three families, three budgets, one country. The difference between them is not luck; it is the field, the city and the number of months on the ground.
| Tier | Month basis | Tuition | Living costs | Fixed fees | Year-one total | Total (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower: humanities in a smaller city | 10-month academic year | SEK 90,000 | SEK 8,000 x 10 = 80,000 | SEK 2,400 | SEK 172,400 | INR 16.97 lakh |
| Mid: sciences on the national baseline | 10-month academic year | SEK 140,000 | SEK 10,656 x 10 = 106,560 | SEK 2,400 | SEK 248,960 | INR 24.50 lakh |
| Upper: high-fee programme, Stockholm living costs, full stay | 12-month stay | SEK 190,000 | SEK 12,000 x 12 = 144,000 | SEK 2,400 | SEK 336,400 | INR 33.11 lakh |
| Mid tier run over a two-year master’s | Two 10-month years | SEK 280,000 | SEK 10,656 x 20 = 213,120 | SEK 2,400 | SEK 495,520 | INR 48.77 lakh |
The fixed SEK 2,400 in every tier is the SEK 900 application fee plus the SEK 1,500 permit fee. The living inputs are anchored to published figures: SEK 8,000 sits inside Linkoping’s published band, SEK 10,656 is the national baseline, and SEK 12,000 is Stockholm University’s stated minimum. Tuition inputs come from Stockholm University’s two bands and Jonkoping’s Prosthetics and Orthotics bachelor’s. The fees are paid once each, so the two-year row carries one set of fixed charges, not two.A two-year permit doubles the funds you must prove, on the same Chalmers reading, so the bank balance scales even though the fees do not.
Count your months before you compare totals. Ten months is an academic year with the summer spent in India. Twelve months is a full stay. Thirteen months is what the permit paperwork asks you to prove. The same student can look SEK 60,000 cheaper or dearer purely on which of those three you used, which is how two cost pages quote the same course at wildly different prices.
None of these totals includes a separate proof-of-funds line, because there is not one. The living-cost column is the money the Migration Agency wants to see.
The line that breaks a Swedish first-year budget is almost never tuition. What breaks budgets is the run of small recurring charges nobody put on the sheet.
Healthcare is the one that catches short-course students. In 2026, courses shorter than one year require comprehensive health insurance of your own, bought privately and paid for before you travel. In 2026, studies lasting at least one year let you register in Sweden’s population register instead, which opens up subsidised health, medical and dental care.
The test that decides which side you land on is the length of the permit, not the length of the course. In 2026, a Swedish personal identity number, the personnummer that Swedish systems use to identify you, needs a residence permit valid for 12 months or longer. So a 12-month master’s only clears the threshold if the permit itself is granted for 12 months, which is why you read the dates on the decision before you buy insurance. With a personnummer, a doctor’s appointment costs around SEK 250 to SEK 400. Without one, you’re on private insurance at full private rates.
Add 5 to 10 per cent on top of your calculated total and hold it as a buffer. That is the judgment behind every Sweden file we build. Timing helps as much as money does, because an autumn start and a spring start load these charges into different months, as our guide to Sweden intakes sets out. Deposits, insurance and the first fee instalment all fall due before you have a Swedish bank account. Map them against the Sweden application process and the buffer stops being theoretical.
Get in Touch
When do I actually pay the Swedish tuition fee?
Before the permit decision. In 2026, you are only finally admitted once the tuition fee is paid, and the university notifies the Migration Agency. Most institutions bill the first instalment rather than the full year, so budget one semester of fees several months before you fly.
Do I pay the SEK 900 application fee once or once per programme?
Once per admissions semester. In 2026, University Admissions in Sweden charges one single application fee per semester, however many programmes you apply to, so SEK 900 (about INR 8,857) covers all four choices on your list. Applying to one programme instead of four saves you nothing.
Is SEK 10,656 a month really enough to live on?
It is roughly what Swedish students live on. As at August 2026, Lund University reports that Swedish students on full state loans and grants receive approximately SEK 9,000 to SEK 12,000 a month, about INR 88,574 to INR 1,18,099. In Stockholm or Gothenburg, plan above that figure.
What does bringing my spouse or child add to the bank balance?
For 2026 applications, an extra SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or partner and SEK 2,664 per month per child, roughly INR 43,697 and INR 26,218. Those amounts stack on top of your own monthly figure, for every month of the permit period, not just the term.
Can I lose a university tuition scholarship in year two?
Yes, on credits. As at August 2026, Malmo’s Master’s Scholarship is retained in year two only on 45 credits a year, with a minimum of 22.5 credits a semester. Fall short and year two reverts to the full fee, so treat the waiver as conditional income.
Sweden is an expensive country with mid-priced universities, and that combination rewards planning. The cost of studying in Sweden for Indian students turns on three choices you control: your subject band, your city and your month count. Read every published fee for its format before you compare it with another. Put the housing application in the day your admission lands. Then prove the funds in the student’s own account, on time, in an instrument nobody has locked. If you’re still working out whether your marks and English scores clear the bar, start with the Sweden admission requirements and build the money plan around a course you can actually get into.
AOEC India counsels students in person from Hyderabad and Tirupati, and files Swedish admission and residence-permit applications for every autumn and spring round. Our counsellors prepare maintenance documents in-house rather than outsourcing them, which is why the fixed-deposit and parent-account patterns above come from our own files rather than from a survey.
