Indian nationals were the largest nationality among UK Sponsored Study visa grants to main applicants in the year ending March 2026, with 90,425 issued, 23% of the total (GOV.UK Home Office study statistics). That scale points to a fast, work-friendly master's route.
Four UK universities rank in the world's top 10. According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, Imperial College London places 2nd globally, with Oxford 4th, Cambridge 6th and UCL 8th (Scholarship Scanner, reporting QS 2027). For a master's applicant, that density of top-ranked institutions widens your shortlist.
The best UK universities for your master's shift with the subject, not the overall table. For 2026/27, UCL charges overseas students £42,700 (approx. INR 55.29 lakh) for its MSc Computer Science (UCL Computer Science MSc), a sign of how much specialist demand shapes both fees and reputation.
From our counselling desk: a strong department, relevant employer connections and access to employers able to sponsor eligible Skilled Worker roles often serve an Indian master's applicant better than an 8th-ranked name in a field it does not lead. A Skilled Worker sponsor can be anywhere in the UK; it need not be near your university. Chase the course and the outcome, not the badge.
A UK master's for Indian students runs from about £18,600 to well over £40,000 in tuition, plus living costs. Sheffield Hallam's MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is £18,600 for the whole course for 2026/27 (Sheffield Hallam University), approx. INR 24.09 lakh, among the lower-cost English-taught options.
Many competitive UK master's programmes ask for a 2:1 (upper second-class honours) bachelor's degree and proof of English. UCL assigns each programme an English level: current IELTS requirements range from 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component at Level 1 to 8.0 in every component at Level 5, and the Computer Science MSc currently requires Level 2, 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each component (UCL English language requirements). Strong documents matter as much as the grade.
Fully funded routes exist for a UK master's. The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), is open to Indian students and pays tuition, airfare and a monthly stipend of £1,452, or £1,781 in London (Commonwealth Scholarship Commission).
As of July 2026, many highly competitive September 2026 programmes have already closed to applicants who require a Student visa, so check live course availability before preparing documents. A UK master's application works best on a 12-month runway, and students beginning a new search should generally plan for the September 2027 intake.
The Graduate Route lets you stay and work in the UK after your degree with no job offer needed. The Graduate visa lasts two years only where the Graduate visa application is submitted by 31 December 2026; applications submitted from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months, except doctoral graduates, who continue to receive three years (GOV.UK Graduate visa). That cut-off is a decisive 2026 planning variable.
