Study in Sweden After 12th: 2027 Entry, Fees and No IELTS

Study in Sweden After 12th
Study in Sweden After 12th

Sweden accepts your Class 12 marksheet whichever board you sat, but that alone is not the whole entry rule. To study in Sweden after 12th you must also clear English 6 and a maths requirement, each judged separately. Timing decides your year. Sit your boards in March 2027 and the final marksheet doesn’t exist on 1 February 2027, so your round is Autumn 2028. You’ll also be told to budget for IELTS, an essay and a scholarship form. For most Indian boards IELTS is optional, the essay is never read, and no bachelor’s scholarship exists. Start with the matrix below.

Key Takeaways

  • Eight Indian Class 12 routes, CBSE to Polytechnic Diploma, count as a school-leaving qualification in Sweden.
  • CBSE English from 2008 onwards and ISC Class XII English replace IELTS; a state board marksheet that never names English as the medium does not.
  • Boards in March 2027 means you apply for Autumn 2028: Sweden makes no offer before results, and Autumn 2027 papers close 1 February.
  • Medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science and teaching are Swedish-taught only.
  • The named degrees below cost SEK 325,000 to SEK 520,000 (INR 31.74 lakh to INR 50.79 lakh) for all three years, whatever the fee basis in the table says. No scholarship exists at bachelor’s level.
  • Living costs run about SEK 10,656 a month (INR 1.04 lakh), about SEK 383,600 (INR 37.5 lakh) across three years, and you prove them for the whole permit period.

As of September 2026, Sweden accepts eight Indian school-leaving qualifications for bachelor's admission, from the CBSE All India Senior School Certificate to a Polytechnic Diploma (India, bachelor's admission, University Admissions in Sweden). That gets your board on the list. English 6 and maths are judged separately, and only some of the eight clear English without a test.

English 6 is the level a Swedish student reaches in their final school year, and each row below is judged against it. A CBSE marksheet with English marks from 2008 onwards, or an ISC Class XII English grade, clears it alone, with no IELTS and no TOEFL. A third route is open to any board: English plus three other subjects taught in English, where the marksheet names the medium. Nine rows below, because the state board marksheet splits on that one line.

Your board may not print those exact words. A Board of Intermediate Education marksheet reading Intermediate Public Examination is the Intermediate Examination Certificate row; a Karnataka PUC II marksheet is Pre-University Education Certificate. CBSE, ISC and Senior Secondary (12th Class) print the table’s name.

In 2026 the marksheet must come from a nationally recognised Board, stamped and signed. A school copy is refused; so is a DigiLocker download.

That last clause is where state board students lose a year. Schools across Telangana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu teach in English and print nothing about it. In the Sweden files we’ve run, a principal’s medium-of-instruction letter has never filled that gap. If the line is missing, book the test in Class 11.

One bar applies across Sweden’s higher education system. Grundlaggande behorighet (the general entry rule) means a finished Class 12 plus English at English 6 level. Anyone who left school after 31 December 2009 also needs maths equal to Swedish Mathematics 1a, 1b or 1c (Bachelor’s requirements, University Admissions in Sweden). Those are first school-level maths courses, not advanced ones. Dropped maths after Class 10? In 2026 a passing grade from your Class 10 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) can be used instead, so pull that marksheet out now.

English-Taught Bachelor’s Degrees in Sweden, and the Five Subjects You Cannot Study

Sweden isn’t where you go to become a doctor. In 2026, medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science and teaching are Swedish-taught only. To study in Sweden after 12th you choose instead from over 100 bachelor’s degrees that run fully in English, each three years and worth 180 ECTS credits, the European credit unit (Swedish Institute).

Your choice narrows fast at the top universities in Sweden. KTH Royal Institute of Technology runs exactly one, a three-year BSc in Information and Communication Technology; in 2024 it admitted one in ten of the eligible applicants. Lund University runs ten, including Biomedicine and International Business.

The tuition column totals all three years; the last shows the published price and basis.

Parents, the middle card is where your loan file starts. You’ll prove that monthly figure for every month of the permit, so a two-year permit needs double. The SEK 900 application fee is separate, once a semester. Our cost of studying in Sweden page has the year-by-year sums.

The Autumn 2027 Round, and Why Your Board Results Arrive Too Late

For the Autumn 2027 intake, the date that decides your file is not the 15 January 2027 deadline. It is 1 February 2027, when the fee and all supporting papers fall due (Autumn semester dates, University Admissions in Sweden). Your final Class 12 marksheet has to be in your hand by then.

  1. 16 October 2026 – the international round opens.
  2. 15 January 2027 – deadline to apply and rank your choices.
  3. 1 February 2027 – fee, fee-exempt papers and all supporting papers due.
  4. 8 April 2027 – bachelor’s results published.

Sweden gives no conditional offer. You cannot apply until you have left school and hold your final transcripts, which generally rules out the international round in the year you finish (Lund University). Boards in March 2027 put you in the next autumn intake in Sweden, a full year later.

Selection runs on your Class 12 grade average alone, recast as a merit rating so grades from other countries compare. No essay or reference letter is asked for or read. No minimum mark is published, and no cut-off is in print anywhere. The merit rating runs on a scale of 10 to 22.5. The score that takes a place shifts each term with the field, so nobody can tell you the mark you need in advance (Selection process bachelor’s, University Admissions in Sweden).

Two rules bend for under-18s. The bigger one frees your family’s money: an applicant under 18 may use their guardians’ bank accounts to meet the maintenance rule, so your father’s bank balance can be used as it is. Everyone else must first move family money into an account in their own name, because parents are not accepted as sponsors. The permit fee is lower too: SEK 750 under 18, SEK 1,500 for an adult (Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency).

From our counselling desk: across the Sweden files we handled this year, the paper sent back most often wasn't the bank statement. It was the Class 12 marksheet, uploaded as a school duplicate or a DigiLocker PDF while the board original sat in a college office. Fetch that paper first if you plan to study in Sweden after 12th.

Pathway Packages and the Gap Year If You Cannot Apply Yet

Say your final marksheet arrives after February 2027. Two things can block you, and only one of them has a fix.

Engineering applicants hit the harder one. KTH asks for maths and physics at Swedish Mathematics 4 and Physics 2 level, the advanced-level school courses, and judges each file against country rules. It offers no entrance tests, bridging courses or preparatory courses to cover a shortfall.

Linnaeus University sells that fix directly. Its pathway course packages qualify you for its own degrees in Applied Mathematics, Network Security or Software Technology. Pass the package and you are guaranteed a place on the linked course the next autumn (Preparatory Education, Linnaeus University). A guaranteed place gives your gap year a start date.

A useful gap year produces two things:

  • The stamped board certificate and Statement of Marks, in original form.
  • An approved English test result, if your marksheet never names the medium.

That gap year will not produce funding. There are no scholarships available for bachelor’s studies in Sweden (Scholarships, University Admissions in Sweden). Not fewer than elsewhere. None. The Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals, the award Indian parents ask about, is master’s level only and closed to India. Plan the full fee or plan another country.

Plan the permit as two events, not one. A student permit runs one or two years depending on the school, and 34 named schools, Lund, Uppsala, KTH, Malmo and Jonkoping among them, can give two years. A three-year degree therefore needs at least one renewal, and in our renewal briefings the surprise is always the same: you prove the funds again, from scratch. Our guide to Sweden student visa proof of funds sets out which accounts count.

You can’t work your way out of the fee. On a permit granted on or after 11 June 2026 you may work 15 hours a week in term time. June, July and August are uncapped. Pass two semesters of higher education and the cap lifts, unless your next permit is for more study below doctoral level.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Those subjects have no English-taught bachelor’s route anywhere in Sweden. Most Swedish degree teaching runs in Swedish and needs proven Swedish, so the fallback is not a shorter course. It is a language project measured in years before you could apply at all.

No. Citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay both application and tuition fees. The exemptions cover only Swedish citizenship, a permanent or non-study Swedish permit, or EU, EEA and Swiss citizenship or family ties. An Indian passport means fee-paying (Universityadmissions.se).

For the 2027 intake, IELTS Academic needs an overall 6.5 with no section below 5.5. TOEFL iBT results from 21 January 2026 onwards need a total of 4.5 on the new 1 to 6 scale, with no section under 4.

It rarely works on an Indian passport. For Autumn 2027 the second round runs 15 March to 15 April 2027, papers due 21 June, results 9 July. Non-EU students who need a residence permit will most likely not have time to get one (Universityadmissions.se).

Yes. Sweden grants a permit to look for work for up to one year, costing SEK 1,500 (INR 14,651). A bachelor’s degree is enough; you don’t need a master’s. You must finish the whole programme you were admitted to, and pass every course in it.

Plan the exit too. A graduate moving straight from a student permit to a work permit skips Sweden’s salary rule, but only on that first work permit. Extend it later and that rule can apply: at least SEK 34,470 a month.

Ardent Overseas counsels Indian students from offices in Hyderabad and Tirupati. The Sweden desk takes each student through board-marksheet checks, the University Admissions account and the Migrationsverket permit file in one cycle. The paper errors above come from those case notes.
