Top Universities in Sweden for Indian Students 2027: QS and THE Ranks, Fees

Top Universities in Sweden for Indian Students
Top Universities in Sweden for Indian Students

The top universities in Sweden for Indian students in 2027 are Lund, KTH and Uppsala. They rank 71st, joint 82nd and joint 87th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Karolinska Institutet is first in Sweden at 55th in the THE World University Rankings 2027. Pick by subject: engineers start with KTH, Chalmers or Linkoping. Life science graduates look at Karolinska or Uppsala. On a tight budget, try Stockholm University, Umea, Jonkoping or Lulea. One warning: a three-year degree without honours doesn’t qualify for a master’s. Class 12 students should read our guide to study in Sweden after 12th instead. The table below has ranks and fees for 12 universities.

Key Takeaways

  • Lund is 71st in QS 2027, and Karolinska Institutet is 55th in THE 2027.
  • Karolinska has no overall QS rank because QS ranks only multi-faculty universities. The Stockholm School of Economics isn’t on the QS list either.
  • Fees come per semester, per year or per whole programme. KTH’s SEK 360,000 (about INR 34.3 lakh) covers a full two-year degree.
  • The KTH India Scholarship gives one award for 2027 to an Indian citizen with an Indian degree. It pays tuition and a living allowance.
  • A three-year bachelor’s without honours does not meet master’s entry. A four-year degree does.
  • Apply by 15 January 2027 and pay one SEK 900 (about INR 8,586) application fee per semester.

Nine Swedish universities are in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and 13 are in the THE World University Rankings 2027, according to QS and Times Higher Education. The table covers the QS and THE leaders plus the main specialist and lower-fee options. Each fee shows its basis: per semester, per year or for the whole programme.

Why the two lists disagree: QS ranks only universities that teach many subjects, so Karolinska Institutet, a medical university, gets no QS rank at all (Karolinska’s ranking page). Choose on your subject, and use rank only to break a tie between two good courses.

Compare whole-degree totals, not a yearly price against a full-degree price. Stockholm University’s SEK 90,000 is one year, but Gothenburg’s SEK 294,000 is two. For cheaper names, see our list of affordable universities in Sweden.

Also worth a look: Malmo University (QS 1201-1400), where one-year master’s started at SEK 110,000 in total for autumn 2026. Orebro University is 651-700 in THE. SLU is third in the world for agriculture and forestry on the QS subject table. Linnaeus University is in neither 2027 list, so judge it on the course alone. Sweden has 39 universities in all, and our study in Sweden guide covers the rest of the move.

Scholarships at Top Swedish Universities for Indian Students in 2027

KTH runs a scholarship that only Indian citizens with an Indian undergraduate degree can win. For 2027 it’s giving one award, which pays two years of tuition and a monthly living allowance for the 10-month academic year, according to the KTH India Scholarship page. Year-two tuition depends on good first-year results.

The awards below pay tuition only, and each is hard to win. Plan your living money as if you win nothing.

  • KTH Scholarship: full tuition, no living costs. In 2026, KTH nominated 65 of 718 admitted applicants, about 9%. Apply between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027 (KTH Scholarship).
  • Uppsala University Global Scholarship: full tuition, not living costs. Only about 2% of applicants win (Uppsala scholarships).
  • Lund University Global Scholarship: a grant may cover part or all of your tuition. The round usually opens in February (Lund scholarship page).
  • Chalmers IPOET and Avancez scholarships: 75% off your tuition. If you excel in year one, it may rise to 85% in year two (Chalmers scholarships).

Don’t count on the national award either. Indian citizens can’t apply for the Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals, which are open only to citizens of 34 listed countries, and India is not one of them.

From our counselling desk: when we build Sweden shortlists with students in Hyderabad and Tirupati, we ask one question before any other: which university do you want a scholarship from? For KTH and Uppsala, only the programme you rank first can win one. Rank it second and you've ruled yourself out.

Degree, English and Deadline Rules for an Autumn 2027 Application

A CBSE or CISCE Class XII English grade can replace IELTS for a Swedish master’s. University Admissions in Sweden accepts CBSE English grades on certificates from 2008 onwards, and CISCE Class XII English grades, in its India master’s instructions. Without that route, IELTS Academic needs 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5 for most programmes.

Sweden offers many English-taught programmes, especially at master’s level, so English proof is a routine part of the file. Your degree matters more than your marks, though, and it’s the first thing we check in every Sweden file. A master’s needs a three-year bachelor’s with honours, a four-year bachelor’s, or a bachelor’s plus a master’s that add up to four years. AYUSH degrees such as BAMS don’t count. With a three-year BSc, BCom or BA without honours, you’ll need a master’s that brings your total study to four years first. Our page on requirements to study in Sweden lists every document.

Once your degree passes, the autumn 2027 round runs like this:

  1. Pick up to four programmes and rank them in order of priority.
  2. Apply on universityadmissions.se, Sweden’s national application site, between 16 October 2026 and 15 January 2027.
  3. Pay the SEK 900 application fee, once per semester however many programmes you list, and upload documents by 1 February 2027.
  4. Get your master’s results on 1 April 2027, then apply for your residence permit.

Start in October, not January. Our Sweden university application process guide shows each upload step.

Frequently Asked Questions

By QS 2027, they are Lund, KTH, Uppsala, Stockholm University and Chalmers. By THE 2027, they are Karolinska Institutet, Lund, KTH, Uppsala and the University of Gothenburg. Lund, KTH and Uppsala make both top fives, so they’re the safest names for reputation.

Not if your CBSE or CISCE Class XII English grade qualifies. If you do take IELTS, check your programme’s level. Some master’s programmes ask for English 7, which needs IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6, so a 6.5 isn’t enough for them.

Yes. On top of tuition, the Swedish Migration Agency asks permit applicants who applied in 2026 to show at least SEK 10,656 (about INR 1.02 lakh) a month. Twelve months of that is SEK 127,872 (about INR 12.2 lakh). See our guide to Sweden proof of funds.

Uppsala’s Computer Science master’s costs SEK 300,000 (about INR 28.6 lakh) for two years. That sits between Gothenburg, which is cheaper, and Linkoping, which costs more. If rank matters most, KTH is the highest-ranked technical university in QS 2027. Compare course modules first, and see the best courses in Sweden for Indian students.

It suits students who can fund a master’s. From 11 June 2026, Migrationsverket rules let you work up to 15 hours a week in term, with no limit in June, July and August. After you graduate, you can apply for a permit of up to one year to look for work. More on part-time jobs in Sweden.
