Your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, and children under 18 can join you on a Sweden student dependent visa, and you add them inside your own Migrationsverket application for a residence permit for higher education studies. In 2026, that costs SEK 4,440 a month for each adult family member and SEK 2,664 for each child. Both sit on top of the SEK 10,656 you already show for yourself, and the money has to cover the whole permit period. Where the money sits is what decides most of these applications, and the rules change again on 1 October 2026. Every row is your own SEK 10,656 a month, plus SEK 4,440 per adult family member and SEK 2,664 per child. A one-year master’s budgets the 12-month column, a two-year master’s the 24-month column; a Swedish student permit is granted for one or two years depending on the institution.

Where the money has to sit

  • Personal bank assets means an account in your name that only you and an accompanying partner can withdraw from.
  • Relatives cannot sponsor you. Their money has to sit in an account in your own name first, so move it early.
  • Locked assets do not count. A fixed deposit frozen through the permit period is not a basis for maintenance.
  • The household is judged as one unit, so a spouse’s own savings count toward the total.

Funding it with an Indian education loan

A sanctioned education loan counts, and so does a scholarship. The certificate has to name the provider, name you as the recipient, and state the period, the payout dates, the amount, and how much is meant for living expenses. For an Indian applicant that means the bank’s sanction letter with the disbursement schedule, not a one-line approval message. A scholarship copy needs the same detail plus a line saying the award is for study in Sweden.

Applying with you or joining later: fees, waiting time, and refusal risks

Applying together is faster by two months. As of September 2026, 75% of first-time higher education permit cases are decided within three months, while a family member applying under the residence permit for family members of a student waits five months for the same mark. Each adult pays SEK 1,500 (approx. INR 14,670).

Filing it together

Filed alongside your own, a Sweden student dependent visa is one form, one payment and one decision.

  1. Pay the tuition fee. You’re admitted only once it’s paid, so everything else waits.
  2. Open your own Migrationsverket e-service (the online application) and add your spouse and children inside it, not as separate applications.
  3. Pay the fees: SEK 1,500 for each adult and SEK 750 for each child under 18.
  4. Present passports and give biometrics. Each family member is fingerprinted and photographed before a decision.

If your family joins later

They file their own application from outside Sweden, and the permit must be granted and issued before they fly. Two dates govern it: you need more than three months left on your own permit on the day they apply, and the permit they get ends when yours does. Open the application about six months ahead, which absorbs the five-month wait without breaking the three-month rule.

Their application also needs a letter from you confirming you will live together in Sweden. The e-service needs an adult applicant holding a Visa or Mastercard, and children under 18 go on an accompanying adult’s application rather than their own. A family member who cannot use the e-service fills in paper form 135011 and submits it at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. What gets a family permit refused

Six paperwork grounds, each with a fix:

  • Applying from inside Sweden. The application can be rejected outright, so wait in India until the permit is granted and issued.
  • Funds short of the permit period, or a statement older than four months. Cover all 12 or 24 months and re-pull the statement near your intended start date.
  • Money still in a relative’s account or a locked deposit. Transfer and unlock it before the statement date.
  • An unproven relationship. A marriage certificate, or shared-home documents, certified in English, settle it.
  • Three months or less left on your own permit. Your spouse cannot be granted one against it, so extend yours first.
  • Working beyond the 15-hour student cap. Your permit can be withdrawn and an extension refused, and their permit falls with yours.

A family permit granted on the basis of yours can be revoked if the tie to you ends or if your own permit is revoked, under rules in force since 11 June 2026. Your permit depends on credits: 37.5 credits (higher education credits, the Swedish version of ECTS) in year one and 45 a year after. A leave of absence can cost you the permit, and your family theirs.

Who counts as family, and the papers that prove the relationship

Four relationships qualify, and parents are not among them: your spouse, your registered partner, your sambo (cohabiting partner), and your unmarried children under 18. Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students can all bring family, and your own admission comes first: the entry requirements for Swedish universities decide whether you get the student permit this one hangs on.

These attachments go into the application you’ve just filed, and one condition sits behind all of them: you must plan to live together in Sweden for the whole permit period. That is why the application asks for shared-address paperwork rather than photographs.

  • Married: a marriage certificate, marriage record or similar document.
  • Sambo: documents showing you have lived together, such as population registration certificates, a joint rental contract, or proof of a joint home purchase.
  • Children: a birth record or birth certificate stating the names of both parents.
  • A parent staying in India: written consent from that parent or guardian, plus a copy of their passport where custody is shared. Sole custody needs the court decision; a deceased parent needs a death certificate.
  • Anything not in Swedish or English: a certified translation.

From 1 October 2026, a child who is not the couple’s shared child faces one extra test: the parent travelling must also be the child’s legal guardian. Consent from the other parent is already required today where custody is shared. Blended families should settle the custody paperwork in India first. Work, health insurance, and school for your family in Sweden

A family permit is capped twice: it ends on the same date yours does, and never runs longer than that family member’s passport. So renew any passport with under 18 months left before you apply, not after.

No blanket work rule for a student’s family member exists in Migrationsverket’s published guidance. The only published line says a granted residence and work permit allows work while it is valid, so your spouse’s decision letter settles it. One other route exists: a doctoral permit runs up to four years, and a family member can apply for their own doctoral or research permit without leaving Sweden.

The 15-hour week is your cap, not your spouse’s. It applies at bachelor’s and master’s level to permits granted on or after 11 June 2026. Budget on one income until that letter arrives.

  • Insurance: from 1 October 2026, under Migrationsverket’s new rules for family members accompanying students, a family member staying a maximum of one year must hold comprehensive health insurance that covers medical treatment and hospital care in Sweden. A one-year master’s puts your whole family in that bracket.
  • Staying a year or more: register with Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency), which opens access to health, medical and dental care and assigns a personnummer (personal identity number). Each person files a separate notice.
  • If children are coming: your municipality must offer a school place from age six to fifteen or sixteen, but no preschool takes a child under one year old.
  • Housing: Uppsala University’s housing guarantee covers the individual student only, not families, so a family flat is a private-market search. Price it into your Sweden cost of living plan early.

What Migrationsverket asks for is proof that you have actually lived together: population registration certificates, a joint rental contract, or proof that you bought a home together. Photographs and a shared address on one bill are not on that list.

Migrationsverket publishes no blanket work rule for a student’s family member on its family pages. The decision letter your spouse receives states what their permit allows, and the Aliens Act (Utlänningslag 2005:716) is the legal basis for a work permit alongside a temporary residence permit. Do not assume full-time rights before it arrives.
