The University of Salford  was founded in 1896 when it was known as the Royal Technical College in Salford, and has its roots in the Industrial Revolution, with the establishment of many of the mechanics institutes and technical/education colleges created at this time. It was a city of commerce centred on its textile industry and bustling Salford docks. It traces its origins to the Pendleton Mechanics Institute, opened in 1850, and the Salford Working Men’s College opened in 1858 which in 1896 became the Royal Technical Institute, Salford.
