Read the fee row against the “avoid if” column, not on its own. Five of the seven publish a euro figure, and the two that stay silent are the two hardest to put in a loan file.

University and specialist routes
Dauphine-PSL runs its fashion and materials track inside a public university, in English and French, but it trains designers alongside managers and engineers rather than putting you at the machine. The first two rows cause most of the confusion, because both get sold as “designer” degrees. IFM’s MA in Fashion Design is the hands-on route: you research, drape, cut and build towards a collection. IFA’s Fashion House Creative Direction blends design with brand strategy, business and visual direction instead. Istituto Marangoni’s Paris MA Fashion Design opens on 28 September 2026. At EUR 39,000 all-in (about INR 42.9 lakh), that is roughly what IFM’s whole two-year degree costs, and the school does not publish how long the course lasts.
What you pay on top of tuition
The biggest single add-on is EUR 6,000 (about INR 6.6 lakh): IFM’s non-EU seat deposit, against EUR 4,000 (INR 4.4 lakh) for an EU student. None of it sits in the tuition row.

Parents, read the timing on that table, not just the totals. These charges land before the visa: an IFM offer asks for INR 6.6 lakh months before your child boards a flight. LISAA states that its registration fees and deposit may be refunded if a request is submitted before August 31st. Treat deposits as early cash until the school confirms in writing whether they are credited against tuition.
What tuition does not cover
Supplies are the line families forget. As of July 2026, IFM states plainly that tuition does not cover course supplies, project supplies or printing for juries and presentations. In practice that means fabrics, trims, prototyping and toiles, portfolio production, jury materials, and sewing and pattern supplies, all on top of the fee.
No school publishes a euro estimate for this. Treat it as a real, uncapped budget line and ask your school for its material list before you sign.
English-taught or French-taught? Structure, intakes and internships
Most private fashion schools in France teach their design master's in English, while public universities teach mainly in French. IFM's Master of Arts in Fashion Design is a two-year, English-taught degree with a September 2026 intake and a built-in six-month internship. Language of instruction, not city, sets your shortlist.
Study fashion design in France without strong French and your list is shorter than the brochures suggest. Here’s the practical split:
- English-taught: IFM, IFA Paris’s English track, Istituto Marangoni, and LISAA’s English stream.
- French-taught: most public-university routes, Dauphine-PSL, and parts of ESMOD. These need real working French, usually B2 or higher.
- Structure: two academic years, studio projects each term, then a long internship or a final collection development project (building a coherent set of garments).
Can you really apply without IELTS?
Only where the school accepts another proof or judges your English in the interview. There is no blanket waiver, and that’s where the “no IELTS” advice online misleads people. For the 2026 intake, IFM requires English at CEFR C1 (the European advanced-level benchmark) and maps it to TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7, Cambridge 185 or PTE Academic 66. It also tests every applicant’s English during the interview, regardless of the scores submitted. So a waiver of the test is not a waiver of the standard.
The internship nobody finds for you
Both main English-taught routes build in long placements, and both leave the hunting to you. IFM requires a six-month internship at the end of Year 2, a written report and a defence before a final jury, and states that students are responsible for finding their own internships. LISAA’s Master Fashion Design and Brand Creation runs a 4-6 month internship in Year 1 plus a six-month end-of-study internship. Competitor guides sell the placement as a school benefit. It’s a school requirement, and a Paris atelier (a design workshop) will ask for your book, not your enrolment letter.

Admission to a fashion design master's in France is decided mostly by the portfolio, not by marks. LISAA's Master Fashion Design and Brand Creation requires three years of completed higher education in fashion design, an individual interview and an artistic portfolio. A strong creative book beats a strong transcript here.
Before you build any of it, check whether the school will read your file at all. The entry bar differs sharply:

Read the first two rows against each other. IFA asks for 180 ECTS of any higher education and IELTS 6.5; IFM wants a design-major bachelor’s and IELTS 7. The bar is not the same, and that gap decides where a given Indian applicant realistically gets in. IFM’s Image pathway opens a broader door still, accepting majors from photography, cinema and visual arts through to writing, marketing and management.
Your portfolio, the creative book
The portfolio (also called the creative book) is the whole application. For the 2026 intake, IFM asks for four to five design projects as a PDF, a minimum of 20 A4 pages, each project carrying a 100-word description. That brief tells you the depth expected: research, mood boards, sketches, fabric swatches, a toile (a rough mock-up garment in cheap cloth) and a resolved final look.
One rule catches people out. For the 2026 intake, IFM states the portfolio PDF must not exceed 20 Mb, and any document larger than that is rejected. Compress your images the week before, not the night before.

They failed on a thin book: ten unrelated sketches instead of four finished projects showing research, a toile and a resolved look. Documents required for a fashion design master’s in France
Private fashion schools in France ask for one broadly common document set. As of July 2026, IFA Paris's How to Apply admissions list requires a resume, a motivation letter, a passport photo, a language proficiency certificate, academic transcripts from previous years, and a passport copy from non-EU applicants. Assemble one master folder and reuse it.
IFA also distinguishes non-EU from EU applicants at the identity step: you upload a passport copy where an EU applicant uploads an ID copy. Build this folder once:
- Portfolio PDF, built to the strictest school’s brief on your list
- CV or resume, and a motivation or personal statement
- Passport copy and passport photo (the non-EU requirement)
- Academic transcripts from previous years, plus detailed academic documents
- Bachelor’s degree or provisional certificate
- English proof, or the school’s interview assessment where it accepts one
- Referee contact details where required. For the 2026 intake, IFM asks for the contact details of two referees, professional or academic, and its admissions jury may approach them directly to fill in a recommendation form

Beyond tuition: living costs, CVEC, visa funds and scholarships
France now sets the money a student must show as a percentage of its minimum wage, not a fixed sum. For student residence applications filed from 1 August 2026, decret n 2026-526 requires 47% of the gross monthly SMIC. The euro figure therefore moves whenever the SMIC is revalued, so the threshold printed in an older guide is unreliable.
The funds threshold now tracks the minimum wage
Parents, this is the number that decides the file, and the basis under it just moved. Since 1 June 2026, the gross monthly SMIC (salaire minimum de croissance, the French minimum wage) stands at EUR 1,867.02 (about INR 2.05 lakh) for a 35-hour week. Run 47% against that and you get about EUR 877.50 a month, roughly INR 96,461. The decree prints only the percentage; the euro figure is arithmetic.

The decree enters force on 1 August 2026, and applications filed before that date stay on the old threshold. That older figure is EUR 615 a month (about INR 67,605), still live in Service-Public’s foreign student long-stay visa guidance. The decree governs admission au sejour (student residence applications), and no official source confirms how consulates treat a first visa filed in India. Plan on the higher figure.
What Year 1 actually costs you
For the 2026-2027 academic year the CVEC (Contribution Vie Etudiante et de Campus, the student and campus-life contribution) is EUR 105, about INR 11,542. Add it to tuition and to roughly EUR 10,530 of funds across twelve months (about INR 11.6 lakh), and an IFM non-EU Year 1 needs about EUR 34,535 in the bank, about INR 38.0 lakh, on our maths. On the same basis, and counting its EUR 500 registration fee, IFA Paris Year 1 needs about EUR 22,035 (about INR 24.2 lakh). That’s money shown, not money spent. In the roughly 80 Campus France files we ran for the September 2025 intake, the single biggest refusal driver was proof of funds. It was not the amount itself, but how the money was accumulated and whether parental income backed it. Build that paper trail months ahead of the interview.

Working during and after your fashion design master’s
France runs one of the world's largest fashion economies, which is why a design degree there carries weight. According to the IFM and DEFI economic-weight study published in 2018, the most recent comprehensive assessment, French fashion represents about EUR 154 billion in direct turnover (roughly INR 16.9 lakh crore). It contributes 3.1% of GDP and generates one million jobs. That scale means real hiring depth.
While you study, your student visa lets you work. As of 2026, foreign students may work up to 964 hours a year, 60% of the maximum working hours permitted (Campus France, Working as a student). That’s enough for a studio assistantship alongside classes. It won’t pay your fees.
The post-study permit Indian students actually use
As an Indian graduate of a master’s-level qualification, you get the APS (autorisation provisoire de sejour, a temporary residence authorisation): one year, renewable once, up to 24 months. That entitlement sits in the France-India Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement, at Annexe I, art. 3.2 of decret n 2021-1321, and not on any Campus France page.
The “not renewable” line quoted at Indian students online belongs to a permit you are not using, the RECE (the job seeker and new business creator residence permit), which runs 12 months flat. Campus France’s own APS listing names India and one year, silent on the renewal the treaty gives you.
- Master’s-level only: the treaty entitlement rests on your qualification genuinely being at least master’s-level, a live question for a school diploma from ESMOD or Marangoni rather than a state-recognised master’s.
- Return-framed: the treaty words the stay dans la perspective de leur retour en Inde (in view of your return to India), so read 24 months as a first professional experience, not a settled path to staying in France.

You want the cheapest degree with clear salary numbers and no French. This field publishes neither a reliable salary figure nor a cheap studio route.
The tradeoffs are real and worth saying plainly. Off campus, daily life runs in French, so weak French can isolate you even inside an English-taught programme.
