September Intake in UK 2027: Deadlines, Visa Timing and the Funds Date

September Intake in UK
September Intake in UK

Undergraduate applications for the September intake in UK 2027 generally follow the UCAS calendar, while postgraduate deadlines vary by university and course. For 2027 entry, the University of Bath’s published dates set the equal consideration deadline at 18:00 (GMT) on 13 January 2027. In the year ending March 2026, Indian nationals received 90,425 visas issued to main applicants (23% of the total), reported in the Home Office’s Immigration system statistics, year ending March 2026. You still have to meet the academic and English requirements, so apply early enough to protect both course availability and visa-processing time. This guide turns each rule into a date, including the month your money must be in the bank.

Key Takeaways

  • UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) applications open 12 May 2026 and close for equal consideration at 18:00 (GMT) on 13 January 2027.
  • Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses close at 15 October 2026.
  • Postgraduate deadlines are set by each university; several close earlier for visa applicants.
  • A Student visa can be submitted 6 months before your course starts, not three.
  • Your balance must stay at or above the required amount for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
  • A Graduate visa applied for on or after 1 January 2027 lasts 18 months, not two.
  • After 30 June 2027, Clearing is the only route for new UCAS undergraduate applications; postgraduate courses run to their own university deadlines.

Undergraduate applications for September 2027 generally follow the UCAS cycle, opening for registration in May and closing for equal consideration the following January; postgraduate deadlines vary by university and course. For the 2027/28 cycle, one UCAS application covers up to five choices and costs GBP 34.50 (approx. INR 4,477), per Manchester Metropolitan University's Seven steps to apply through UCAS.

The first trap is treating registration and submission as the same day. Use that gap for your personal statement and your academic reference.

  • 12 May 2026: you can start building the UCAS application.
  • 1 September 2026: UCAS applications open and submission begins.
  • 15 October 2026 at 18:00 (UK time): Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses close.
  • 13 January 2027 at 18:00 (UK time): the equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses.

The January deadline is no soft target: applications submitted by it must receive equal consideration, and later ones are read only where vacancies remain. That autumn intake in UK calendar is fixed, so settle the UCAS deadline for 2027 entry before you weigh up where else to study in UK.

How do postgraduate September deadlines work without UCAS?

Most postgraduate applications go directly to the university, and several close earlier for students who need a visa. For September 2026 entry, the University of Sheffield's Key dates and deadlines for postgraduate courses lists 1 September 2026 for applicants who need a visa, against 4 September 2026 for everyone else.

Some routes are exceptions: conservatoires, teacher training, social work, nursing, and some medicine and accelerated law courses run through UCAS or another central system. Where a university publishes a separate deadline for applicants who need a Student visa, follow that earlier date. Exeter shows the same shape. For September 2026 entry, its Application deadlines, Postgraduate Taught page sets 11 September 2026 for international applicants, against 16 September 2026 for UK applicants. Those are current-cycle dates; the 2027 versions land later.

For September entry, Sheffield normally will not arrange a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), the sponsorship number a licensed student sponsor issues before you can apply for a visa, when it is requested less than 3 weeks before the latest possible start date, unless you apply for your visa from inside the UK or use a priority visa application service. Follow Sheffield’s recommended CAS timeline anyway, and do not assume a faster visa service will be available.

  • Work to the earlier of the two published dates, always.

Many courses in the UK universities September intake for Indian students assess applications as they arrive (rolling admissions) and can close earlier once they reach capacity, so the September intake in UK for masters rewards early files. Our list of top universities in UK for masters shows which names publish an early international cut-off.

Working backwards: your month-by-month plan for September 2027

For 2027 entry, any remaining undergraduate offer conditions at the University of Exeter must be met by 31 August 2027, listed in its Undergraduate Application Timeline. Other universities set their own end dates, so work the September 2027 intake application timeline backwards from whichever date your offer names.

Plan in reverse, or one document ends up twelve weeks behind in July. That is how to apply for September intake in UK.

July to October 2026: tests, transcripts and the shortlist

Book your English test first, because a retake needs a gap. If IELTS is not your route, our guide to study in UK without IELTS covers the alternatives. Three things move slowly:

  • Official transcripts from your board or university.
  • The academic reference, requested before your referee’s term gets busy.
  • A shortlist of five courses, checked against entry requirements.

October 2026 to January 2027: the submission window

If Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry or veterinary science sits on your list, your window ends in October. Chevening, GREAT and Commonwealth set deadlines that ignore your course deadline; our page on scholarships to study in UK for Indian students lists what is open to you.

February to May 2027: offers, firm choice and the deposit

conditional offer waits on results; an unconditional offer does not. Undergraduates then pick a firm and insurance choice through UCAS, while postgraduate applicants accept or decline directly with the university. Many universities require a tuition deposit before issuing the CAS; check the amount and deadline in your offer letter and budget for it well ahead.

June to July 2027: funds mature, then the CAS

Your CAS turns on the university’s own conditions, deposit and compliance checks, so chase it the moment your results land. The 28-day financial period can run alongside that. It has to be complete before you submit the visa application, not before the CAS arrives.

August 2027: visa decision, and the buffer you should not spend

Keep two spare weeks at the end. Students who spend that buffer on a late CAS request land during induction week.

When can you actually apply for the UK Student visa?

A Student visa can be submitted six months ahead, not three. In 2026, GOV.UK's Student visa: apply from outside the UK guidance sets the earliest application at 6 months before you start your course. For a late-September 2027 start, that window opens in late March 2027.

You will read the three-month version everywhere, and it is wrong for applications made outside the UK. The real gate is your CAS, so the Student Route timeline for September intake starts on whichever date comes later.

  • Late March 2027: the earliest lawful date to apply for a late-September start.
  • GBP 558 (approx. INR 72,400): what GOV.UK charges in 2026 for a Student visa from outside the UK.

So, when to apply for September intake in UK visas: after the CAS arrives, once you are inside the six-month window and the rest of the evidence is ready. That means the financial period complete, a TB certificate where it is required, and ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance where your course needs it.

September intake in UK: when does your bank balance need to be ready?

In 2026, the Student visa maintenance requirement is GBP 1,529 per month for courses in London and GBP 1,171 per month for courses outside London, for up to 9 months. GOV.UK's Student visa: money you need sets both rates. That money must be in place earlier than most families assume.

Course locationMonthly maintenanceMonths shown9-month total (our arithmetic from the monthly rates)
LondonGBP 1,529 (approx. INR 198,400)up to 9GBP 13,761 (approx. INR 17.86 lakh)
Outside LondonGBP 1,171 (approx. INR 151,900)up to 9GBP 10,539 (approx. INR 13.67 lakh)

Maintenance is only half the test. In 2026, you also need enough to cover your course fees for 1 academic year (up to 9 months), as stated on your CAS. Parents, that fee sits alongside the living-cost figure; our breakdown of the cost of studying in UK shows it by course.

The date that matters depends on when you submit the visa application, not on when the course begins. In 2026, GOV.UK requires you to hold that money for at least 28 days in a row, and the end date of that period must be within 31 days of the date you apply. Apply on 15 July 2027 and a statement period ending 13 July can satisfy the timing rule, provided the balance never falls below the required amount. Because your application date can move, recalculate the window before you apply.

In 2026, the Immigration Rules Appendix Finance accepts any form of personal bank or building society account, provided the account allows the funds to be accessed immediately. It can also sit in a parent’s or legal guardian’s account, with proof of the relationship and their written consent. A fixed or term deposit that cannot be withdrawn immediately fails the accessibility test; a certificate of deposit may be accepted when it meets the evidence and holding-period rules.

From our counselling desk: across the September 2026 files we ran, the costliest delay was never the visa decision. It was a top-up paid in to reach the required amount: that restarts the 28-day count, because the clock runs from the day the balance first reaches the required level. An ordinary credit that stays above the figure does not. We now fund the account in full a fortnight early and leave it alone.

Why September 2027 starters get 18 months of Graduate Route, not two years

From 1 January 2027, a Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. GOV.UK's Graduate visa rules set both durations. A student starting in September 2027 applies after that cut-off, so 18 months is the maximum for non-doctoral graduates.

That changes your return maths: a September 2027 start buys six fewer months of post-study work than a 2026 start did. If your plan needs two years of job-hunting to recover the fees, this intake will not deliver it.

In 2026, switching to the Graduate Route means a GBP 937 application fee (approx. INR 121,600). GOV.UK’s Graduate visa cost page lists the Immigration Health Surcharge for an 18-month visa at GBP 1,152.50 (approx. INR 149,500), so the all-in cost is GBP 2,089.50 (approx. INR 271,100). A September 2027 starter applies in 2028 or later, so both charges may change before then.

  • Budget fee and surcharge for the month you graduate, and plan the job search around 18 months.

Missed the January deadline? What is still possible for September 2027

Missing the January deadline does not end your 2027 start. For 2027 entry, 30 June 2027 is the deadline for applying as a late applicant. After that date, new applications can only be made through Clearing, in the University of Bath's important dates for undergraduate applicants starting in 2027.

Four routes remain, in the order worth trying.

  1. Apply late but before the June cut-off, targeting courses that still have space.
  2. Use UCAS Extra if your five choices are gone and you hold no offer.
  3. Clearing, which opens on 2 July 2027 for eligible applicants and matches unplaced students to vacancies.
  4. Take deferred entry to 2028 if the funds or the test score are not ready.

In the files we handled this year, students who moved to a January start finished with better offers than those who scrambled through Clearing in August. The UK also runs January and May intakes; our guide to how many intakes are there in UK sets out which courses open in each.

Frequently Asked Questions

In 2026, GOV.UK’s Student visa guidance states you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks if you are outside the UK. That ordinarily leaves time before a late-September start, but allow for peak-season delays and requests for further evidence.

In 2026, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), the annual NHS-access charge, is GBP 776 per year (approx. INR 100,700) for students and dependants, on the GOV.UK healthcare surcharge schedule. You pay for the visa’s full granted length, which can run past your course dates, in one payment when you apply, and 2027 rates may change.

No. The January equal consideration deadline is undergraduate-only. Most taught master’s applications go to each university on its own deadline, and many courses close once they reach capacity.

Deferred entry is agreed with the university, not with UCAS or the Home Office. A deferral shifts your CAS, funds window and visa application forward a full year, so re-plan the money.

Ardent Overseas counsels Indian students from offices in Hyderabad and Tirupati, and our UK desk works both the September and January intakes each year: shortlist, application, offer, tuition deposit, CAS request, and visa application. The timing patterns above come from running those files.
