Entry Requirements at Tampere University

General eligibility for master’s program

  • Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or university of applied sciences.
  • The degree must be bachelor’s level (minimum 180 ECTS credits or equivalent, corresponding to 3–4 years of full-time study).
  • It must be a degree that confers eligibility to pursue the master’s level study in that country.
  • Depending on the target program, we require a robust academic background in an applicable subject area.

Eligibility Criteria Specific to Program

  • Each master’s program may have its own requirements regarding background in the particular academic subject.
  • Essential or relevant work experience or prior knowledge of research methods may be needed for some program.
  • Motivation letter, portfolio or written assignments may be used for evaluation.
  • Some competitive courses use another assessment e.g. video interviews.

Requirements for International Students Applying to a Bachelor’s Program

  • Applicants should have finished secondary upper secondary education or equivalent.
  • Applications are done through the Finnish national Study info. & application for fi portal during the joint.
  • Extra steps, such as motivation videos, may be included in all program depending on program guidelines.
  • Overall academic profile and documents submitted are taken into account for admission which is competitive.

Requirements for Language Proficiency

  • TOEFL iBT (minimum overall score 92), PTE Academic (minimum 62), or other equivalent qualifications.
  • There are some exceptions, for example completion of previous studies in English at an accepted institution
  • You must provide evidence of your language ability at the time of application; conditional results are not accepted
  • Instructions for submitting language test results for verification are clearly stated on each program.

Special Cases and Conditions

  • If graduating spring/summer 2025, the degree must be completed by 18 August 2025 Eligibility.
  • To be considered for a scholarship, your official, certified transcripts and certificates must be submitted by the set deadlines.
  • Refugee status in Finland is also accepted if the third-country citizen does not have the usual documentation that proves their eligibility.
  • Reapplying is not possible for students who are currently registered for the same degree program at Tampere University.
